In addition to Twitter and LinkedIn getting updates, Box and Dropbox have both been updated as well. Dropbox gets pushed into v1.1.0.79 while Box gets pushed into v1.1.0.88. Both updates cite 'Quality Improvements' in the change log but for Box users there is an additional note added. "You can store up to 10GB of content using your BlackBerry device, at no cost to you."

Previously, Box users who signed up using their BlackBerry 10 smartphone were offered 5GB of free storage and more recently Box has been advertising 10GB's in BlackBerry World. This update adds that additional 5GB to already existing users accounts though, if you're already signed up and have more than that added through the various other promotions Box has / had running, there won't be any additional added. e.g. I already have 50GB so didn't get the additional 5GB this promo brings.

Also, since I know a lot of people have had this problem, the update thus far appears to of have corrected the issue where Dropbox would go missing from the sharing menu. You're mileage may vary though so sound off in the comments if it looks to be fixed for you as well. In any case, the updates are live right now so go ahead and fire up BlackBerry World to grab them.

Easily integrate Dropbox on your BlackBerry Z10 or BlackBerry Q10!

Do you use Dropbox?

It's the August Long Weekend in Canada, so I've been out at the lake the last couple of days chilling with my family. I don't do this enough, so it's nice to take some time to visit, catch up and re-live my youth a bit.

I actually consider my two older brothers to be pretty good examples of normal mainstream technology consumers (I know people like myself who work in this space tend to fall outside of normal), so I like to question them and get their feedback on things whenever I have the chance.

My middle brother Mark is a mechanical engineer (he's a smart guy) and when it comes to gadgets, runs the mix of a BlackBerry / Apple / PC household. Him and his wife use BlackBerrys (Torch 9810 and Bold 9900), the kids each have an iPod Touch, there is both a PlayBook and an iPad in the house and while they have historically been PC users, there's now a Mac in the house too. That's a good mix of gear, so I expect him to be pretty in the know.

Consider myself shocked last night when I brought up Dropbox and he didn't know what I was talking about. Then I asked my oldest brother Tony (a shops teacher) and he didn't know either. I was flabergasted! We were debating the tech changes in the world over the past few years and what's been good and bad, and I mentioned Dropbox as one of those newer services that has been life changing. Seriously, I can't even imagine going back to a life without Dropbox.

The fact that my bros had never heard of Dropbox before, nevermind the fact they weren't using it, got me wondering how many of our CrackBerry readers are using it. I sort of assumed it was beyond the early adopter stage and already quite mainstream, but maybe it still has a way to go before coming a household name. I love how easy it is to browse through files on the BlackBerry PlayBook. I actually prefer to bridge my BlackBerry smartphone and scroll through files through the File Manager than on my BlackBerry alone (with the exception of pictures, of course, since they just show up as a list anyway). The problem with this is that the File Manager is more of a file viewer. Sure you can search or delete, but it isn’t true file management is it?

There are numerous times per week when I need to quickly get an image or screenshot from my BlackBerry to my computer. For years I used the old method of emailing the file to myself, but after a while that gets to be a chore. Cloud storage is all the rage. On the surface, it seems like PlayBook owners have been left out in the cold. When we look closely, however, we can see that it is easy and powerful to manage all our cloud storage needs right from the PlayBook.

We know that we need more native apps for our beloved PlayBooks. We also know (even more so after BlackBerry World 2012) the BlackBerrys are for people who need to get stuff done. In today's world - no matter what business you are in - getting stuff done means having access to cloud storage.

For some platforms, there is an app for everything - including cloud storage. Our sister site (iMore) ran a great article on all the available apps for cloud storage on iOS, and it is worth a read.  For us PlayBook owners, we need to get a bit more creative. The good news, however, is that we can access all major cloud storage services on our PlayBook as easily and as effectively as any other platform...we just need to work a bit harder at it!

I have one or two games installed on my device, but that's not what I spend the majority of my BlackBerry time doing. I haven't had Dropbox on my BlackBerry all that long. Actually, I had it installed on my Bold 9700 and my Torch 9800, but I never really used it. I gave it a go again once a compatible beta build was available, and I use it all the time now on my Bold 9900. If you haven't heard of Dropbox, it's a great app for syncing files across multiple platforms. Yesterday Dropbox released an update bringing the app officially to v1.0.55. While this is the same version we saw show up a month ago, we know some of you prefer official versions of apps.

As you can see from the screenshot above, this version includes:

• Security passcode
• Save email attachments to Dropbox
• various bug fixes

This version is BlackBerry OS 7 compatible. If you already have it installed on your device, you should be seeing an upgrade in App World. Try refreshing your apps if you don't see it. If you don't have it installed or you don't have access to BlackBerry App World, you can check it out and sign up for a free account at the link below.

Like most times when new devices arrive, there is typically a little bit of lag from when the devices release and apps get updated. Such is the case for Dropbox for BlackBerry. When the Bold 9900 and 9930 arrived on the scene Dropbox would load up but only to a blank screen. Now, a new forums build is available for BlackBerry 7 users and indeed does give you a working Dropbox for BlackBerry, plus adds some new features:

New features:

• Security passcode
• Save email attachments to Dropbox
  

This build resolves:

• Issues on 9900 & 9930 devices (BB OS 7 support for other devices should be working fine)
• Bug on thumbnails screen where only a few thumbnails were loaded
• Performance issues (more work to be done here)
• Various design tweaks

Known issues we're working to resolve:

• Passcode is not engaged when you hit the button to turn off the screen (only when you leave the app)
• Cached files are re-downloaded unnecessarily

Dropbox for BlackBerry has been updated again, this time to v1.0.49.1. Along with typical bug fixes, this update also brings with it a new layout and the addition of a Favorites tab. No more searching through folders everytime you need that logo or the 'good' pictures of the kids; just add them to your Favorites and they're available at the click of a button. As always, the Dropbox app is free, and available through BlackBerry App World.

After a bit of a meltdown on Sunday Dropbox has recovered and is back up and (securely) running. Their BlackBerry app has again been updated, this time what looks to be some minor bug fixes. Whether the "fixes" are related to their secutiry breach we're not sure, but better safe than sorry right? No change log this time around but it doesn't look like anything major has changed (if you sport something let us know in the comments). BlueBox has finally rolled out their latest update for BlackBerry PlayBook owners looking to access their DropBox accounts. Now sitting at v1.2 BlueBox has become a great alternative to a official DropBox application. Granted, out of the gates it was totally rough around the edges but with a new UI now in place, the ability to zip and unzip files as well as an well inetgrated file browser -- BlueBox is getting better with each release. If you've tried BlueBox in the past and were'nt happy with it, then by all means -- give it another go. This round of bug fixes and overall enhancements has done the app well.

Just yesterday, we asked what apps you would like to see arrive on the BlackBerry PlayBook and not surprisingly -- Dropbox was one of them. Luckily for Dropbox users and PlayBook owners, Dropbox has a voting system in place on their site so that users may sugget and vote on new features and additions they'd like to see happen.

A native BlackBerry PlayBook application is now on that list so, if you're among the many that want a native client then head on over to the Dropbox Votebox page and cast your vote. Every bit helps and if enough votes are racked up, Dropbox can then get started on planning the app.

We let you know yesterday that FileScout is now fully integrated with Dropbox, and now we have learned that Dropbox has also updated to build 1.0.39 for BlackBerry users. It doesn't look like there were a lot of changes this time around, but hopefully if you had trouble with the last versions then the update will help you out.
From the change log:

• uploading file changes for file stored in folder with non-ASCII characters can result in creation of damaged folder name with contents of a new file
• user interface rotation glitches on some screens
• BES permissions problems
• resolve some chronic upload retry issues and related UI glitches
• file browser lagginess when dealing with non-ASCII characters in file names

Long time fans of FileScout will likely already be aware of this but for those of you out there who may be making use of Dropbox and have not as of yet, not heard of Filescout this should be of some interest. Over the weekend, Dropbox managed to squeeze out a new update for its BlackBerry users. v1.0.37 is now available for download via the Dropbox website and looking at the change log should address a lot of users issues with connections and permissions that were seen in previous builds. Oddly enough though, the change log actually looks unchanged from the last release so we're guessing they just fixed the underlying bugs within those changes.

• handling of edge cases when running out of space on sd card and in device memory
• open-edit-upload usecase wasn't working for devices with encryption enabled
• share link freezes for some users
• open-edit-upload usecase fails for files with non-ascii filenames

After what seemed like an endless limited beta Dropbox has finally been released for public consumption. The app can now be installed on your device totally free and allow you access to your files on the go. Dropbox is a very cool and probably one of the most easy ways to share files across platforms. Features of the app include:

For those of you all who happened to get in on the Dropbox for BlackBerry beta, you can now log in and download the latest release available which, should be showing as v1.0.30. At this time, I couldn't find any change log to report about what exactly has been updated but, I can say just from using it that it does appear to work better on the BlackBerry Torch now. If you still haven't gotten into the beta release, then you may want to keep your eye on Dropbox site as they often make unannounced slots available.

Well, we've seen it arrive on practically every other platform before BlackBerry but, either way it is here now. Dropbox, the online storage solution which offers users 2GB of space for free has just gone live with their beta application for BlackBerry. You'll have to act fast though, the forums posting says 500 users and no one knows how many have already taken that count down. Check it out and report back in the comments. My report, it's fast and works great. As a Dropbox user, certainly glad to see it arrive. PS: You'll need to login to your dropbox account.

Dropbox for a while now has been opening up their API to developers. Since then iPhone and most recently, Android and iPad apps have arrived. Now, the Dropbox page is showing that a BlackBerry application is "Coming Soon".

BlackBerry users have had access to Dropbox in the past but that was simply through their web interface and honestly, wasn't the best. Being a Dropbox user I'm pretty excited to see this happen, I just hope its sooner then later. Dropbox offers paid and free solutions for storage, right now free users get 2GB of space with an additional 250MB added if you invite some folks to join Dropbox with you.
