Word GO! Spelling

The Blundell brood has been no stranger to the application line up from Zeebu Mobile. The last app we looked at was the ArtGo Colouring application for the BlackBerry PlayBook, well, my son had more of a look at it than I did. Zeebu Mobile recently released another “edutaining” application by the name of WordGo! Spelling. Made for BlackBerry smartphone, with or without a touch screen, WordGo! Spelling has a library of over 50 words ranging between 3 and 5 letters in length.

The application uses images to first help the child determine the word and then learn to spell the word. Each letter and word is read aloud by Word GO! Spelling, providing motivation and audible learning. If you are using a touchscreen BlackBerry, your child can drag the letters into the correct order. If not, then you can make use of the keypad. Some children may get frustrated, so the application provides a hint option that will display a semi-transparent image of the correct letter. As always, the applications from Zeebu are fantastically designed and sport unique imagery and colour – easily ensnaring the attention of kids…and some adults too. In typical Zeebu fashion, Word GO! Spelling offers an application lock feature that prevents children from exiting the app and wreaking havoc in your messages, browser, contacts and files. Word GO! Spelling is available for $3.99 from the CrackBerry App Store.

Contest: We have 50 copies of Word GO! Spelling to be won. All you have to do is leave a comment on this post to be entered. Contest ends this Sunday at midnight PST.

It seems as though each time I bring home a new gadget, my son appears to be just as eager to check it out. Try telling a 4 year old that the PlayBook is the “World’s First Professional Grade Tablet” and not a toy… especially when the name contains the word Play. Not to dissuade a future BlackBerry addict, I went looking for applications I could download for him. I remembered the kids applications from Zeebu Mobile Inc, such as MathGO! And SuperBabyGo! and their ability to entertain/educate children without giving them access to anything else on a BlackBerry. ArtGO Coloring is available for the PlayBook, if you’re brave enough to put the tablet into their little hands.

The application provides various backgrounds to choose from, as well as resizable animals to populate the background with. Virtual markers, pattern paints, crayons and an eraser stand at the ready; waiting to help your child’s imagination take shape. At times my Son would get frustrated with the lagging response time when scrolling through, and moving animals. The resizing option wouldn’t always work either. Nonetheless, he did enjoy painting a dog to look like a tiger (sorry, no Ligers available). There is no way that a child can draw outside of the lines with ArtGO Coloring. The PlayBook can also house a gallery of saved works of art for future bragging. Zeebu also included an option to share the image via Facebook. I’m hoping for a Twitter option at some point.

Now unlike the BlackBerry smartphone versions, your youngling can easily exit from the application and access any other program in your PlayBook. The next thing you know, they can be into the browser or your messages (if bridged). I’m pretty sure you’ll find enjoyment with colouring or drawing on your own, just make sure you at least pretend to work. You can pick up ArtGO Coloring for $3.99 from BlackBerry App World.

“Well, I made the duck blue because I'd never seen a blue duck before and I wanted to see one.”

If you take a look back at our “What you may have missed this week” post from around Fathers Day, you can see the artwork my son drew for me. It’s amazing how those first few scribbles fill us with such pride; and sometimes confusion.

“I thought it was a car..”

“No, it’s a monkey.”

Then comes the colouring; some focus so intensely on staying within the lines, others colour as if the picture just exploded. Either way, they are works of art and very fridge worthy. Zeebu Mobile, developers of children apps such as BabyGO! and Peek-a-go, have come up with another activity to share on your BlackBerry; ArtGO! Coloring Lite. Your screen becomes a crayon canvas, allowing your child to colour a dinosaur, a butterfly, or go nuts on a blank page. ArtGO!, like other Zeebu apps, uses a keypad combination to block the younglings from accessing the rest of your BlackBerry.

ArtGO! Coloring Lite Features:

  • automatically keeps your coloring inside the lines (this feature can be turned on or off)
  • save your art to work on later
  • send your drawings to a friend
  • set your drawings as your device wallpaper
  • Zeebu's locking mechanism can be enabled to keep little ones from getting out of the app

ArtGO! includes 6 different colours to choose from (ROYGBV), though it may be difficult for younger children to switch between them. Those using a BlackBerry with a trackball may find colouring a bit sluggish. To release the pint-sized Picasso within your kid, you can grab ArtGo!, for free, from BlackBerry App World.

Peek-A-GO

Last month, we had a look at the Baby GO! and Super Baby GO! applications from Zeebu mobile. If you’re too lazy to click here to check out the review, I’ll sum it up for you. The applications turn your BlackBerry into a source of entertaining and educational activities for your little rug rat. Various activities are available; an alphabet zoo, phonics and letter blocks, to name a few. It locks out every other BlackBerry function and eliminates any worries, other than physical or liquid damage. You set up a password, email address or key combination to return to normal functionality.

Recently, Zeebu Mobile released another BlackBerry app called Peek-A-GO!. An update of the timeless peek-a-boo game (which still makes me giggle), Peek-A-GO! caters to young crowd; 0 to 3 years of age that is. Unlike Baby GO/ Super Baby GO, there is only one activity to play. Your child will have to press multiple buttons to reveal what is behind the curtain; which turn out to be animals (both real and fictional). It’s a great way to engage the attention of your child, as short as it is. The only problem I have is competing with my son for time with my BlackBerry. You can pick up Peek-A-GO! from BlackBerry App World for $2.99 USD.
