Wikitude has been doing all kinds of cool stuff since we first saw it pop up. We were all wowed when we got our first look at what it could actually do, and it hasn't slowed down one bit. The latest addition comes in the form of myWorld - a feature that lets you create your own augmented reality within the app. You can add locations, photos and comments and then share with friends and family so they can explore your world. All in all some very cool stuff here. If you give myWorld a spin, drop a comment and let us know how you're using it. Check out the video above as Wikitude Chief Marketing Officer Andy Gstoll tells more.
Wikitude initially launched with only BlackBerry 7 support but today they launched a BlackBerry 6 compatible version into App World. With the expansion to support OS 6 it allows a ton more users to take advantage of the various features offered, such as sharing locations with friends, finding new contacts for BBM, and much more. Hit the link below to download Wikitude on your OS6 device.
The other night, a curious thing happened: I got a BlackBerry Messenger contact request. That in itself is nothing really out of the ordinary; my BlackBerry Messenger bar code is floating out there on the internets. I almost alwasys ignore the contacts I don't recognize. No, this request came via the Wikitude Augmented Reality browser on this BlackBerry Torch 9850 that I just reviewed. A gentleman named Dustin saw my BBM name in his Wikitude browser and used the application to make the BBM contact request. Figuring that there are very few Joseph Holder's out there with BlackBerry OS7 devices, Justin correctly guessed that I write for CrackBerry.com. We had a brief conversation, and I got to feel like a (rather) minor celebrity for a bit.
The whole exchange got me to thinking. Is finding new BBM contacts using the Wikitude browser cool or a little creepy? When we discussed the feature on one of our podcasts, I remember thinking that I was leaning toward the creepy side. After this one encounter with the service, my mind is made up. Finding new people through the Wikitude Augmented Reality Browser is not cool; it is very cool.
One of the most anticipated applications for the new BlackBerry OS 7 phones has to be the Wikitude Augmented Reality Browser. If you're not familiar, the augmented reality application displays the image from your smartphone's camera. Layered on top of this image are clickable links to information about the places around you. In past demonstrations, we've seen banks, hotels, shops, and even BlackBerry Messenger Contacts pop up on the screen. All in all, the Wikitude Augmented Reality Browser appears to be a highly useful (and entertaining) app.
If you've got an OS 7 device (lucky!), then you'll want to grab this app quickly. It's available today, right now, in BlackBerry App World. Please note that this BlackBerry App World link will only work from a BlackBerry OS7 device.
Back at BlackBerry World 2011, where we first went Hands-On with the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930, RIM also showed off the new Wikitude Augumented World Browser that'll come preloaded on BlackBerry 7. Following up their initial video which was shown off during the keynote, it looks like the RIM Dev Team shot another video which recently hit the interwebs.
For another look at the Wikitude app which take advantage of the new built-in compass coming on the next generation of BlackBerry Smartphones, check out the video above. Definitely some fun features in this one! Now we just need some new BlackBerry Smartphones to buy so we can put it to use!

During BlackBerry World's keynote demo sessions, RIM showed off the new Wikitude for BlackBerry app that will come preloaded on the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 and make use of the device's built-in Digital Compass. The Wikitude app is referred to as Augumented Reality Browser... but what does that mean? Probably the best thing to do is check out the video above to see it in action or Wikitude's blog post on the announcement for me details, but esssentially you can open the camera view within the app and see the world around you with points of interest layered on top. With over 150 milllion geo-referenced places already tagged around the world, Bold Touch owners are going to have a lot of fun with this one.
We hear an even better demo video is coming soon of the Wikitude app in action, so stay tuned and we'll post that up as soon as it hits the youtubes.
You may or may not have heard of Wikitude but -- if you have plans on picking up a new BlackBerry Bold 9900 then you're going to start seeing a lot of the their augmented reality application. Wikitude will come pre-loaded on the device when it launches. Right now, we've not had a chance to go hands-on with the app but here is what Wikitude had to say about the launch:
“The Wikitude team is very excited to see its AR browser as part of BlackBerry’s new device proposition” said Martin Herdina, Wikitude’s CEO. “BlackBerry’s Super Apps concept is the perfect environment for Wikitude to show its full potential as it seamlessly integrates with other applications on the device”.
“Combining Wikitude with the overwhelmingly large user base of BBM around the world creates a completely new form of social interaction. This is the very first time that instant messaging is rolled out in AR on such a large scale” says Andy Gstoll, Chief Marketing Officer at Wikitude.
Using the browser is rather easy -- just load it up and point your finder around to see integrated overlays within the app itself. Wikitude will fully integrate the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) allowing you to interact with their BBM contacts and meet new people in augmented reality as well share info from various places such as YouTube, Twitter and more.
