Active Alerts

The National Weather Service provides forecasts and warnings for the United States. Its official task is to provide “weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy.” Recently, with the number of tornados and flooding that have tragically affected so many people, being alert and being prepared is key. In BlackBerry App World, an application called Active Alerts was recently released. Through Active Alerts users can learn of current alerts and what to do in response to the situation.

These alerts can be filtered through various options which include; location (by choice or by GPS), type, severity and type (you know, in case you want to ignore tornadoes or fires). Users can then decide what interval to use when refreshing alerts. Once set up, you can then navigate through the specified alerts. Details will include all of the affected locations, effective date/time and probability. Tapping into the power of notifications, Active Alerts can cause your Blackberry to sound a tone or vibrate when the alert is of an extreme and/or severe nature. It’s another level of personal security you can use, especially if you live in an area prone to such disastrous activity. Active Alerts is available for $2.99 from BlackBerry App World.

WeatherEye v.2.0.1.4 Now Available For Download

Seems not too long ago we were posting about WeatherEye 2.0 being in beta. Now, WeatherEye has reached version 2.0.1.4 and is now available for download. If you're looking for a great, free weather application, look no further. The updated UI and hourly forecast updates make the latest version of WeatherEye a great choice for a quick and function weather application. WeatherEye has made the application available via BlackBerry App World as well as OTA to ensure no one is left out.

BerryWeather 2.1 Public Beta Now Available

The folks at Bellshare let me know their insanely popular weather application BerryWeather has been updated to version 2.1.40 and is now out of public beta and officially available. A lot of key differences came with the 2.1 version as it's a re-write of the original code which will perform better across all BlackBerry devices, while taking nothing from the BerryWeather that so many have come to love. As a thank yout to everybody at CrackBerry who helped Bellshare with the beta testing of the latest version, they have offered us up 50 free copies to give away to our readers.

Win a Free Copy of BerryWeather: Drop a comment on this post for your chance to win one of 50 full versions of BerryWeather. Let us know what your favorite season is or what you hate about your least favorite season. For me, it's winter. Hockey and curling and snowmobiling aside, Canadian winters are never fun as it often times gets cold enough to freeze your face off. I'd much rather be at the beach :)

Berry Weather 2.1

Henrik from BellShare just sent us an email letting us know that BerryWeather 2.1 is now available in Public Beta form and that they're looking for feedback from CrackBerry readers to help put the finishing touches on it. Henrik says this version will be a lot faster and easier on memory than previous versions (good stuff!). The full changelog is as follows:

  • Complete rework of the core. BerryWeather will now fully close when sent to background. The homescreen wallpaper and icon will keep updating.
  • Using new server protocol to improve update speeds and minimze CPU load
  • Changed forecast/advisory update settings. New option 'With Forecats' for advisory will update advisories whenever forecasts are updated, 'Never' will never update advisories
  • Added data+settings backup to memory card
  • Added support for setting the icon size on homescreen walllpaper
  • Added support for blacking out the settings screen (on by default)
  • Added support for selecting whether to show radar/webcam links in internal viewer or browser (allows adding mp3/video/hrml links)
  • Fixed lag on image browser for background image selection
  • Fixed lag issues on BlackBerry Tour (and other devices)
  • Fixed several potential memory leaks
  • Fixed errors on first time built-in map loading
  • Version 2.1 is using a new storage format. This means all data will be lost.
  • We strongly recommend uninstalling any previous version before installing version 2.1
  • You will need a valid BerryWeather 2.x license or this beta will be limited to a 3 day trial.

You can follow the link below to jump over to BellShare's forum for the download links. Feel free to leave feedback there or in the comments of this blog post. If you don't have Berry Weather 2.0 yet, you can purchase 2.0 here to have the 2.x license.
