Michelle's most-used BlackBerry apps of 2011

One of the bad things about being a procrastinator and putting off doing this post: some of my most used apps have already been covered. I'm going to need you guys to all pretend you didn't already read Adam, Bla1ze, Ryan, or Joseph's lists and it will all seem new. Lots of people complain that BlackBerry just doesn't have any apps, and while we are missing some that would be nice to have, I think there are plenty out there to make use of.

In no particular order, my most used BlackBerry apps are:

Twitter for BlackBerry updated

Research In Motion is happy to announce that they have just released Twitter for BlackBerry v2.1.0.27 for everyone to download! This version includes multi-account support, which was the top user requested feature. The update also brings the ability to share tweets with your BBM contacts -- in addition to the already included Share to email, SMS, PIN, and Facebook. If you're not seeing the update in BlackBerry App World yet, you can try refreshing it or just check back as the update will be pushed out over the next 24 hours.

BlackBird

So from day one, BlackBerry PlayBook users wanted a Twitter application for their PlayBook, instead of a quick launch icon to the Twitter mobile site. To be honest, up until recently, I couldn’t stand using the mobile site, as it wasn’t as functional (or attractive) as it is now. This left me with continuing to use a Twitter application on my BlackBerry smartphone. Some developers recognized the need and answered the call; one of which was GENOA Net Works.
Your Twitter account access is quick and seamless through their application called BlackBird. The application gives you almost as much access to your account as you have by accessing Twitter from your computer. Rather than viewing multiple items on the main screen (timeline, trends, followers/ following), everything is listed as tab; waiting to be opened. I was surprised to see BlackBird being able to offer so much, yet providing a minimal layout to it all. Was it enough to stop relying on my smartphone to access Twitter? Curious how BlackBird brings Twitter to the PlayBook nest? Keep reading.

CrackBerry Twitter Dude

It wasn't all that long ago that the official Twitter for BlackBerry app didn't exist and us BlackBerry users had no choice but to seek out and use a third party twitter client (see our ultimate twitter cilent roundup). And even with T4BB now out and getting a lot of use, I still see a lot of BlackBerry tweets coming from third party apps like UberSocial (formerly UberTwitter), and I know I personally use SocialScope (which is still in beta).

So I'm curious to know, CrackBerry Readers, which Twitter app is your favorite these days, and why? Vote on the poll above, and then let us know in the comments why a particular app is your favorite. Is it that Twitter for BlackBerry is good for basic tweeters and UberSocial wins the power tweeter award? Or do you favor one over the other for another reason? Have you used one app the whole time, or have you swapped between them and picked your favorite? Or maybe you just hate twitter altogether and think it's stupid (that's ok, tweeters won't be offended). Wherever you're at with the twitter, we want to know. Oh, and don't forget to follow @crackberry (and i'm @crackberrykevin). I'm curious to see the poll results and comments on this one, so have at it!

UberSocial, formerly UberTwitter, now available for download

For those of you still lost when it comes to what Twitter client to use we have some great news of you're a former UberTwitter user. Twitter has removed the suspension on the oh so popular Twitter client after the changes were submitted for it to be known as UberSocial. UberSocial has been re-enabled and as such can now be downloaded directly from the UberSocial website. Now that the mess has been cleaned up and things are right in the Twitter universe again, enjoy folks!

As we noted earlier, ÜberTwitter and various other Twitter clients such as Twidroyd have been suspended by Twitter. Although it came as a shock tomost users out there, the fix for the situation is well under way and things should be back to normal as soon as possible. If you head on past the break, you can view the full response from UberMedia that outlines the whole situation.

UberTwitter

Have you noticed your ÜberTwitter is no longer working while trying to update your Twitter account? Sure you have. Don't worry though, you're not the only one out there this is happening to. According to a posting made to the Twitter support page and sent off to various users, ÜberTwitter has been suspended from being used on Twitter due to violations of Twitter policy. What exactly, that means we're not entirely too sure but we'll keep you updated if and when we do find out the details. In the meantime, relax. The world is not over nor is skynet taking over. There are other Twitter clients available to you.

HootSuite For BlackBerry

Being realistic here, HootSuite for BlackBerry got off to a bad start on the BlackBerry platform. A lot of users had issues with lag, being unable to import accounts or just overall getting the application to load period. HootSuite though, has worked hard over the little bit since the apps original released and has now corrected many of the issues users were seeing. If you have faith in the owl and feel as though their BlackBerry offerings will soon fall in line with their awesome web offerings give em another shot. Afterall, it is a beta release and bugs are bound to exist in beta releases.

Hootsuite For BlackBerry

HootSuite for BlackBerry has finally been released in beta form to the public. It was back in July that it was first announced and users were asked at that time to sign up for the beta. Now today, Hootsuite is sending out notifications that the application has indeed gone into public beta and is now available for download. If you've signed up for the beta you should get a link soon and if not, well then you can just use the link below to get started. Keep in mind though if you download, it is a beta and you should file feedback with any concerns you have so that the Hootsuite folks are aware of it and can improve the app over time.

UberTwitter

If ÜberTwitter is the Twitter client you fancy you'll wanna be sure to grab the latest release from their download page. Version 0.933 contains many bug fixes and improvements over the previous beta release that is sure to please many users out there. Some of the changes are:

  • Map Provider - Allow users to select either MapQuest (default) or BlackBerry maps to display users locations. User action to retrieve a map You now have to click the ‘Retrieve Map’ button after opening a tweet in order for the map to be retrieved. This will result in substantially lower bandwidth requirements and improved battery life.
  • UberChannel date display bug fix - Fixed a bug where tweets in UberChannel streams had the date incorrectly displayed.
  • Resetting tweets to retrieve bug - Fixed bug where on an upgrade the number of tweets to retrieve would reset to 60.
  • Highlight color in Midnight Theme bubble layout - The highlight color in the Midnight theme when using the bubble layout is now much easier to discern.
  • Text Ad color -  We changed the color of the text ads to conform to the them colors. The ads are still clearly marked as an advertisement.
  • GPS Radio Activation -  The GPS radio will now only be activated when you open the compose tweet screen IF you have selected to use the GPS radio to determine location. This should greatly reduce battery drain, but may result in the location mechanism falling back to the cell tower method on some occasions.

Keep in mind folks, this release of ÜberTwitter is still beta so be sure to send off any feedback you may have for the release. The download is available via their website and will support devices all the way up to BlackBerry 6.
