Tether has long been a BlackBerry user "go to" app for getting internet access from a PC or Mac on the go. I personally have had countless times when it has saved me due to no available internet. Tether has announced today that they are dropping the app price from $49.99 to $29.99 for good. If you aren't a Tether user yet, I highly recommend grabbing it for yourself (and maybe a friend or two) at this new low price. The software for both PC and Mac as well as on device has been updated as well, so if you are a current user, make sure you have the latest version. Tether is one of the most popular apps for BlackBerry, and I can say it's one I have used in the past with great success. Tether is an application that allows your PC to take advantage of your Blackberry's data plan, allowing you to access the Internet on your laptop anywhere there is cellular coverage from your BlackBerry. Friday 1:27 a.m. It's been a long day for me, but I'm not done yet. I'm usually up this late; and tonight is no exception. I'm working on the introduction to the Mobile Nations Podcast that's due to be recorded later in the day. I need to search the internet for some podcast-y music, but there's a problem. There's no internet to be found. You see, I've been away these last few days, visiting my grandparents and helping the family with a few things. They don't have an internet connection; but thankfully, I have Tether.

Tether is an application installed on my BlackBerry and laptop computer that lets me use my smartphone's data plan to connect that laptop to the internet. Most carriers charge an additional fee for doing this. I'm almost always around a WiFi connection, so I don't tether enough to really justify paying an extra $15 each month ($180/year) to my wireless carrier to make use of the data plan I already pay for.

Tether (note the capital "T") is one of the more expensive applications made for BlackBerry, but it well worth the cost. Each and every time that I've found myself in need of an internet connection and no router in sight, I'm thankful that I purchased it long ago. Tether proved its usefullness to me not only at my grandparents' but on the drive home, too.

If you've never heard of XTop Mobile before that's likely because it has been "coming soon" forever now. That said, XTop Mobile has finally been released in a lovely beta fashion and is welcoming users to sign up and try out the service. Review of Tether for BlackBerry Smartphones

Tether by definition is:

1. (noun) a cord that anchors something movable to a reference point, which may be fixed or moving.
2. (noun) an application that allows you to access the Internet on your computer anywhere there is cellular coverage, through your Smartphone.

Today, I will be reviewing the latter of the two, as I don't think anyone wants to hear how well my new surfboard leash (a.k.a. tether) has been working out for me. For those still in the dark...not to worry, just "hang loose for a minute" and I'll do my best to get you up to speed. Tethering, is the use of a mobile device, such as a BlackBerry, to supply Internet access for another device (i.e. computer), which is otherwise unconnected, using the Smartphone as a modem. This can be done through Bluetooth wireless technology or cables (such as USB). Now that the technicalities are out of the way, let's get to the meat and potatoes, or as we say here in the Islands...Fish and Poi.
