SugarSync 2.1

SugarSync is by far one of my favorite applications to have on my BlackBerry. It’s one of the few apps I have loyally installed on each of my BlackBerry smartphones over the past couple of years. By making use of SugarSync, you can access your files from anywhere – a traffic jam, the beach, the toilet; anywhere! It’s not just read-only access to your documents; it’s access, edit and then sync. Through the application you can stream your entire music collection without having to access a single USB or set up WiFi Music Sync. You can also sync and share files and/or folders with your contacts. This means eliminating the need to run back to the office to retrieve your client the documents you need.

Just before I went to bed last night, I noticed BlackBerry App World notifying me that an update was available for SugarSync. What else could they possibly stuff into this application? Check it out:

  • You’ve got offline access: Now sync files and entire folders to your BlackBerry for offline access. It’s perfect for accessing your stuff on an airplane.
  • You’ve got SD card sync (perfect for backing up your photo library): Snap lots of photos on your BlackBerry, but hate the process of getting it onto your computer? You can now back up and sync anything on your SD card, including your entire photos folder, to the Cloud and your computers. No wires required.
  • You’ve got (even more) security: All mobile transactions have always been encrypted, but we’re going further by giving you an option to add a PIN code to access the app.
  • You’ve got better performance and stability: Our aim is to make the app as efficient as possible. We made big improvements here.

Not bad for a company that also offers 5GB of storage to start…for free! You can increase this by upgrading, referrals or going through the Getting Started steps.

If you're unfamiliar with SugarSync, it is a file back & sharing service similar to that of DropBox.  I say similar because I have come to be a true believer that SugarSync is superior to DropBox.  We've written about it in the past and like many I glazed over and thought "Oh whatever, DropBox is better" and did so without really looking at what SugarSync offered.  At CES2011 I met with Robb from SugarSync and bluntly asked "Why do you think SugarSync is better than DropBox?"  To my surprise I was given an answer I wasn't prepared for from Robb, "DropBox is GREAT!  We'll even back that folder up for you!"  With that bizarre answer, he had my attention and I looked further.

My biggest frustration with DropBox was that all your folders must be underneath the almighty DropBox folder, and I am a little particular with my file structure and that always ate away at me but I dealt with it.  Looking further into SugarSync I found that I could select ANY folder on my computer for backup, I didn't have to live inside their file structure.  Next stop was the fact that DropBox's free account was 2GB and SugarSync's is 5GB.

Where I lost some love for SugarSync was the BlackBerry app.  Compared to that of the iOS and Android application , the BlackBerry was absolutely the 'black sheep twice removed' in the mobile app family.  Until today....

For the cloud storage lover, SugarSync has upgraded its free offering up to 5GB from the previous 2GB, giving users more freedom utilizing their online storage quota. Over the next day, users on existing 2GB plans will automatically be upgraded to 5GB (requires no action from the user). Laura Yecies, SugarSync CEO, said that statistics show how people's storage needs every two years. "We believe our free 5 GB service will give consumers a true taste of how SugarSync can support their fast-growing digital lives by managing their data in their own Personal Cloud. This is by far the most robust free, cloud-based service for consumers on the market." she added.

Whether it is important data, project files or anything else you want to synchronize, you can do so with SugarSync. Keep your files on your PC, Mac or BlackBerry or anywhere else, and you can free yourself from old fashioned USB flash drive transfers. So, why not jump over to the SugarSync Web site and have a look at what it all is about?

SugarSync v1.5 adds streaming music to their cloud storage app for BlackBerry

SugarSync has released the lastest version of their cloud storage and synching application for BlackBerry. SugarSync v1.5 now includes the ability to stream music direct from their servers to your BlackBerry device. This is of course in addition to the other added features for the app as noted in the press release:

SugarSync for BlackBerry features the ability to remotely access, open and easily share your computer files, including documents, photos and more stored in a SugarSync account. With an appropriate document editor, files can be edited as well and synced back.

With the new version, people may stream non-DRM protected music - synced from their computers to the cloud – directly to their BlackBerry handheld device, and save local storage for favorite tunes, photos, videos, and more. The built-in music player enables people to play full sets, not just single songs.

The new version also includes email auto-complete, a time-saver feature which allows people to even more quickly share a files with colleagues or friends, as well as performance enhancements and bug fixes.

Lately, I have become quite a fan of cloud storage applications. With SugarSync adding music streaming to the list of offerings, it will push them beyond other services such as Evernote. When you sign up, you get 2GB of storage allocated to you for free with larger packages available for purchase starting at only $4.99/mnth.
