If you were hesitant to take the OTA update to BlackBerry 7.1 for either the BlackBerry Bold 9930 or Torch 9850, you can now download the official desktop installer files. Of course, with their release that also means any CDMA user can grab these files and install them on compatible devices provided the vendor.xml file is removed. If you're looking to get the installer, hit up the Sprint BlackBerry downloads page.

Torch 9850

As expected, Sprint has started to roll out BlackBerry 7.1 to other compatible devices as well and next in line is the BlackBerry Torch 9850. Many users after reading the news of the BlackBerry Bold 9930 reciving its update checked their devices as well to find BlackBerry 7.1 waiting for them. Still not listed on the Sprint BlackBerry downloads page but that will come eventually. Either way -- if you're not seeing it as of yet, just sit tight as it will be along shortly and don't forget to let us know what changes you're seeing either in the comments or in the CrackBerry forums.

BlackBerry 7.1

A few hours ago I heard a rumor that Sprint was supposed to be rolling BlackBerry 7.1 out to all compatible handsets come tomorrow and before I could even have a chance to blog the rumor up, jtels2593 and CMHBerry in the CrackBerry forums opened up a thread letting everyone know the update had indeed turned up on their devices.

For now, it appears to only be an OTA update but it's expected a Desktop Manager installation alert will be along shortly as well as a direct install file from the Sprint BlackBerry downloads page and in case you forgot what all BlackBerry 7.1 entails -- the biggest feature addition is the Mobile HotSpot functionality we've seen in previous leaks but no word yet on whether or not Sprint plans on making that an included feature or a seperate fee.

So, go ahead and hit that check for software update button. You may have BlackBerry 7.1 (OS 7.1.0.163 specifically) waiting for you to download, but if not -- sit tight cause it seems Sprint will continue to roll it out between now and tomorrow, though what devices aside from the BlackBerry Bold 9930 remains a mystery for now. Sound off in the comments if the update is showing for you.

BlackBerry PlayBook on sale at Sprint

Waiting until after Christmas to make purchases on big ticket items can really pay off, since a lot of retailers have sales to clear out unsold merchandise. If you're still in the market for a BlackBerry PlayBook and missed out on some of the sales that were recently underway, you can head on over to Sprint between 12/26/11 and 1/7/12 and pick one up for just $199.99. Since the tablet is considered an accessory, you don't need to worry about being a Sprint customer or contracts. If Santa doesn't leave a PlayBook under your tree this year, do you plan on taking advantage of future sales and buying one? Thanks for sending this in Mark!

Toss It! for BlackBerry

A few months back we showed all you folks a game called Toss It! by Smarter Apps, the makers of Angry Farm. Well as of today, those of us who are lucky (or unlucky, however you see it) enough to have Sprint for our carrier, can download the game for free! The Sprint promo seems to be running until November 10th or while supplies last (whatever that means). For those of you who haven't heard of it, Toss It! is essentially a game of tossing a variety of objects at the intended targets and score points for each success.

Four Levels of Play:

  • Toss a piece of paper into the waste paper basket at the office
  • Kick a football through the uprights at the stadium
  • Drain the free throw with a basketball
  • Sink the ping pong ball into a beer cup on the beer pong level

Features include:

  • Four action-packed game levels (Paper Toss, Football Kick, Basketball Toss and Beer Pong)
  • Engaging special audio and video effects
  • Supports BlackBerry® OS 4.6 devices and above

Sprint rolling out BIS 4.1 tomorrow?

Sprint BIS 4.1

We've spoke about BIS 4.1 coming to North America soon and the latest Sprint PlayBook gives us a good indication as to when. Unless plans have changed, it appears as though Sprint customers (and maybe other carriers) will be enabling BIS 4.1 tomorrow at some point. Most likely in the wee hours of the morning to limit the impact on services.  That's about it for now -- we'll just have to wait and see if they roll it out or if it's been put off for another date, which does sometimes happen.

Sprint LTE

At Sprint’s Strategy Event today, plans were announced to convert the carriers CDMA 19900 MHz spectrum to LTE. Awaiting a nod from the FCC, this switch will also include making use of LightSquared’s 1600 MHz spectrum. The first wave of LTE markets and devices (hopefully including BBX BlackBerry SuperPhones) will quickly roll out sometime in mid-2012 and a complete implementation by 2013. They plan to provide 176 million people with coverage from both WiMAX and LTE by the end of 2012; and an expected 250 million people covered under LTE sometime in 2013. Sprint’s Direct Connect, 3G and 4GLTE networks will be combined into a single architecture (their Direct Connect service is replacing their stagnant, obsolete iDen service).

This is an aggressive undertaking that will see both CDMA and WiMAX eventually shuffle off into the night. With this complete conversion, Sprint is going to need devices to support LTE. Could we see an LTE supporting BBX BlackBerry SuperPhone at the time of launch? A couple of weeks ago, Kevin made mention of the L3; an internally named full touchscreen BBX BlackBerry SuperPhone. Wouldn't it be pretty convenient to see it at the front line for the LTE launch? I hope so because I certainly don't see one in the image above!

Sprint BlackBerry logo

Sprint officially announces their Voicemail 2 Text app specifically for BlackBerry users. The official press release can be read here but, here's the gist of it:

Wireless devices give consumers the freedom and flexibility to stay connected from anywhere. With voicemail-2-text apps, customers can efficiently identify and respond to messages in a manner that is convenient for them.

This week, Sprint launched a voicemail-2-text app for its BlackBerry users. Sprint BlackBerry customers now have an easy and convenient way to receive and respond to voicemails. With Sprint Voicemail-2-Text, customers can quickly and easily read their voicemail messages via email or text message and then respond to the message with just a simple click. In addition messages can be easily forwarded and saved – no more writing down messages or misplacing them.

The application has a 30 day FREE trial (standard text and data rates will apply) and after that it is available for a monthly fee of $1.99. After your trial subscription has ended, you can simply open the app and select Subscribe to continue using the service with the monthly fee. Sprint's Voicemail 2 Text app supports select Bold, Curve, Style, Tour & Touch (I'm thinking they mean the 9930 or 9860 here).

I haven't been able to get the download to complete as of yet (keep getting an error message halfway through the download). Curious if anyone else has gotten the app to download and how accurate the SMS messages are so drop a comment below!

Sprint BlackBerry Curve 9350 arrives October 2

For some, the news of the BlackBerry Curve 9350 being held back on Sprint might have been a bit bothersome but no matter -- the device is now set to launch on October 2nd and still remaining at the originally planned price of $79.99 after MIR. That's a pretty sweet deal for a BlackBerry 7 equipped device. You can check out our full review of it's kin, the BlackBerry Curve 9360 here. Also, I don't normally say I told you so but -- I told you so.

Sprint Torch 9850 hot spot

One of the features that has gone missing in all versions of BlackBerry 7 is that elusive Wifi Hot Spot capability. We saw it, then we didn't, then we saw it, now its gone. Word on the street is that the feature will be made available for devices (most like on a per carrier basis) down the road in an official software update. Well it looks like someone at Sprint didn't get that memo as loads of BlackBerry Torch 9850 units shipped with packaging that states Hot Spot Capable right on the box. While this is somewhat true given it will be capable with the update, it's not totally accurate. Sprint employees received the notice above so they can be sure to inform buyers that the feature is not yet available, however it is said to be arriving in the fourth quarter (aka the next few months). So hopefully this highly sought after feature will indeed pop up courtesy of an official update fairly soon.
