Michelle's most-used BlackBerry apps of 2011

One of the bad things about being a procrastinator and putting off doing this post: some of my most used apps have already been covered. I'm going to need you guys to all pretend you didn't already read Adam, Bla1ze, Ryan, or Joseph's lists and it will all seem new. Lots of people complain that BlackBerry just doesn't have any apps, and while we are missing some that would be nice to have, I think there are plenty out there to make use of.

In no particular order, my most used BlackBerry apps are:

Ryan's most-used apps 2011

Year after year, I can honestly say I install more than my fair share with applications. Between beta testing, reviews and my own curiosity, I’m surprised that any of my BlackBerry smartphones haven’t screamed “Enough!”. With that in mind, I try to keep my BlackBerry smartphone as clean as possible. If I don’t use an application frequently, it’s uninstalled. For the few I do hold onto, I don’t actually realize how much I use them as it becomes simply second nature to me. Many apps have come and gone, but a select few I still keep close at hand. Check out my most-used apps of 2011.

Socialscope

Don't shoot the messenger here but, for those of you out there lucky enough to have a Socialscope account and have recently picked up a BlackBerry Torch only to find out that it wasn't compatible, Socialscope has just released their latest update. Version 0.9.5.147 is now available for download from the Socialscope website. Lots of new goodies have been built into this release. Having been using it for the past few days now, I can say it's the most solid build to date from the Socialscope folks. Some of the changes include:

  • Swipe left and right to switch tabs
  • When reading a message swipe left and right to switch message
  • Double tap a tab icon to go to the top of the message list
  • Search twitter from your home screen through universal search
  • Go to your friend’s profiles from the home screen through universal search
  • Crazy fast scrolling
  • Super low battery usage

Before you fill up the post with comments asking, no we still do not know when Socialscope will roll out of beta and be available for everyone. I really do wish I had the answer to that question. Best thing I can say on the matter is that if you ask any current Socialscope user which BlackBerry Twitter client they prefer, the majority will tell you it's Socialscope and it's well worth the wait and that the FaceBook, Foursquare and Flickr integration is just the icing on the cake. Current users can grab the update now which is also available to other devices, new users can sign up via the Socialscope homepage.

Review of SocialScope for BlackBerry Smartphones

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

With a tagline like "a mobile inbox for your social networks", and stats reporting that users find it "more important than the Inbox, Brick Breaker, and the Browser", it's no wonder that from those who have been graciously allowed into the over-extended private beta, I've heard mostly love stories for SocialScope.

I'll admit that the multitude of not-yet-privy-to-the-beta users often look at me like I'm crazy, and maybe they're right. I mean, there is nearly zero support for this app. You can attempt to send SocialScope a suggestion email and debug file from the Settings menu, but that typically generates an auto-response saying, "Thanks for taking the time to send feedback, we really appreciate it ... but don't expect to hear back from us." Try to engage them via Twitter, and it's most likely to lead to nowhere. There is a Tumblr blog ... but you won't find consistent post, only a developer's response to all the backlash.

Despite the negativity, I still tell anyone who asks that this is simply one of the best BlackBerry apps I've ever used, mainly because of the social media integration. It is a large part of what fuels why the device rarely leaves my hand. (I don't plan to turn this into "My top apps for accessing Twitter from your BlackBerry", I will say that my consistent second and third choices are UberTwitter and the official RIM Twitter App.)

What's on a CrackBerry BlackBerry?

What's on a CrackBerry BlackBerry?

We all know that CrackBerry is the source of information for BlackBerry applications. There are so many out there. On CrackBerry, you can easily read up on new and updated apps, in depth reviews and even pick up applications from the CrackBerry App Store. While we do get to take a look at some incredibly interesting applications, one thing I get asked is, “What do you use?” My BlackBerry has seen plenty of applications cross its home screen. Some have stayed as they have been quite beneficial. Others, though they could be useful, simply didn’t work specifically for me. It’s not necessarily because they weren’t decent applications, but because of both space and need.

So with access to all of these applications, which ones made the cut? Which apps have found a home on our BlackBerrys? What’s on a CrackBerry BlackBerry? With a fondness for all apps on our devices, I asked the editors and writers what their top 3 installed apps were and why. Check out the responses after the jump.
