The popular barcode reader ScanLife has added some great new features to their mobile app to give a more customized experience. Scanlife now includes local prices, coupons and customize nutiriton information for scanned products. The information will be relevant to whatever product is scanned. Features include:

  • Local prices via Milo.com. Scan the code to see what other local stores currently have the product in-stock and how the price at one compares to another down the block.
  • Digital coupons from Coupons.com. Scan a code from a product in your home or on the go to get relevant coupons from top manufacturers. Customers can scan a box of cereal or bottle of shampoo to find and print coupons for savings in the store.
  • Nutrition information via Food Essentials. Scan the code to see if there are specific allergens like gluten or peanuts in a specific food, or get other health information like calories and sugars.

The new version of ScanLife is available now OTA fromĀ getscanlife.com.

CrackBerry Barcode

We use many types of bar codes in our everyday life. Nearly everything we buy has a UPC code printed on it. The CrackBerry app store features QR codes in the description for every app. Magazines and even books use these codes to rapidly steer their readers to more information.

To make use of all these codes, you need a good scanner. I tested four of them: Edocrab, ScanLife, Sccope, and Microsoft Tag. A good barcode app is one that scans easily, understands a variety of codes, and gets you to the correct information. Only one actually met all of those qualifications.

Having just recently downloaded this app a few days ago and testing it out, I was rather disappointed in the uses that were available for it. The odd barcode here and there would work but more were unreadable then readable. In turn, I deleted the app having thought I would never use it enough to actually rason keeping it around on my BlackBerry.

Yesterday, that changed. Having read over at BlackBerryCool that Scanlife was now updated with support for UPC/EAN codes I realized it suddenly just became more useful. Support in Scanlife now has QR, Datamatrix, EZcode and UPC/EAN meaning you can scan everyday products now and have the application produce results. At this time only auto focus devices can make use of the UPC codes, all others will maintain the same support as before.
