Poynt for BlackBerry

The extremely popular BlackBerry application Poynt has yet again received an update bringing a couple of new features to the table. Lately we have seen them expanding around the world and adding new features, and this update to version 1.8.6 doesn't fall short. Poynt has done a nice job of not only rolling out new features to specific areas, but continuing to expand the areas they support as well. They have added the following changes in this build.

  • WhatGas(UK): timestamp on updated prices now representated by elapsed time instead of date.
  • Table booking functionality for France and Spain
  • Gas prices now available in Canada
  • Offers integrated into Restaurant Section
  • Online menus and food ordering - US only.

A sit down with some of the Poynt team

Poynt

Michelle let us all know about the update to one of our favorite apps, Poynt. For any that don’t know, Poynt is an all-in-one location-based search application and is one of the favorites for the majority of BlackBerry users. Here at CES, I got to sit down and chat with several members of the Poynt team including CEO Andrew Osis and Jeff Davison, VP Marketing and Communications. It was very interesting to hear just how far Poynt has come since it’s creation several years ago. The Calgary based company has increased their employee count from 35 to 80 within the last year with employees in several countries. I was assured that Poynt will always be free regardless of the updates they add on to the super app and that the company is always looking for a way to make it even more outstanding. The possible addition of a partnership with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children here in the US (they’re already partnered with the Missing Children’s Society in Canada) is in the works and will allow users to see Amber Alerts relative to their location. With all that this app can already do, I can see why it’s always voted one of the most downloaded and must have apps.

Poynt for BlackBerry

Uber popular BlackBerry application Poynt received a nice update today. The new version sits at v1.8.5, and brings support for some of the newer BlackBerry smartphones -- Bold 9790 and Curve 9380 -- as well as larger icons for touchscreen devices, a TeleNav library update, and for for users in the UK a new section for petrol prices. The new petrol search feature allows users to find the closest or cheapest petrol stations in their local area. Additionally, Poynt users will be able to quickly update current petrol prices where prices have fluctuated. Pretty cool!

You can grab the new version of Poynt in BlackBerry App World at the link below. As always, the app is completely free, and once you have it, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. Full press release regarding the new petrol search feature for UK users is after the break.

Ryan's most-used apps 2011

Year after year, I can honestly say I install more than my fair share with applications. Between beta testing, reviews and my own curiosity, I’m surprised that any of my BlackBerry smartphones haven’t screamed “Enough!”. With that in mind, I try to keep my BlackBerry smartphone as clean as possible. If I don’t use an application frequently, it’s uninstalled. For the few I do hold onto, I don’t actually realize how much I use them as it becomes simply second nature to me. Many apps have come and gone, but a select few I still keep close at hand. Check out my most-used apps of 2011.

Poynt for BlackBerry

One of the most popular free applications for BlackBerry, Poynt, received an update today. Though not a huge jump in version number (v1.8.1 to v1.8.3), there are a few notable additions to the application. The first is the option of opting out of the Child Search feature. This was a program that was rolled out back in September, where Poynt joined forces with the Missing Children Society of Canada (MCSC) to assist in the fight against child abduction. The second change has to do with offers, which you can now search by keyword and by your location to find nearby deals. They have also added a new section which features daily deals and mobile coupons for local businesses and restaurants.

If you already have Poynt installed on your BlackBerry, head over to App World and download the update. If you don't have it installed, you can grab it from the link below.

Every year over 300,000 children are abducted in Canada and the US. This statistic is both heartbreaking and frightening, especially if you're a parent. It's always nice to see developers of popular applications updating their apps for the better good of the world, and this is one of those occasions. Poynt announced yesterday that they have joined with the Missing Children Society of Canada (MCSC) to assist in the fight against child abduction.

A first-of-its-kind geo-targeted notification system through a mobile app, Poynt will assist in the timely location and recovery of missing or abducted children. When a child goes missing or new information on their whereabouts is received, time is of the utmost importance. By pushing geo-relevant Child Search Alerts to Poynt users already in the vicinity of a missing child, Poynt and MCSC will be able to quickly disseminate important information to aid in the recovery of missing children. The Child Search Alerts will direct Poynt users to a mobile website where they can view information about the missing child including pictures, a physical description, background details, information about other potential people who are with the child, as well as the areas where the child is thought to be located.

This is awesome news and a partnership that has potential to do a lot of real good in the world. Poynt can be found in BlackBerry App World. Full press release and further details about the new feature can be found after the break.

One of the cool things about the BlackBerry PlayBook is the BlackBerry Bridge functionality which allows you to connect your BlackBerry tablet to your BlackBerry smartphone. This concept of having two devices working together vs. having your tablet and smartphone as distinctly different experiences is one that gets a lot of CrackBerry readers excite.

That being the case, it was really cool to see Poynt come up with a pairing solution for the BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry Smartphone by their own design by tapping into the push services that RIM offers. You need to check out the video above to see it in action - it's pretty awesome! The end result is that after you pair your phone to the tablet, the apps are essentially connected. You can have Poynt closed on our smartphone, and from within the PlayBook's Poynt app place phone calls, make reservations (it'll add them to the calendar on your phone), etc. Cool stuff.

Be sure to watch the video above and check out the video below. You can grab Poynt from BlackBerry World for free. Great job Poynt!!

Poynt for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Poynt is one of my favorite apps on my BlackBerry. It's always there when I need to check out local eateries or scope some movie times. I was excited to see it is available in App World for the PlayBook and quickly got it installed. The only downside for now is that GPS currently isn't working on the PlayBook - which poses a big problem for Poynt. Being that it works totally off the GPS to find your location, it really isn't useful at this point. I blame RIM for the issue but hopefully we'll see an update very soon that corrects this. Aside from the obvious, Poynt looks to be as good as its phone counterpart. You can check out local restaurants, movie times and find businesses. All in all a great free app to have installed that can really help out in the clutch. Check out the video for more and hit the link below to download.

Poynt BlackBerry PlayBook

The last few weeks there have been loads of apps cranked out by BlackBerry devs across the world for the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook. We've seen a few here and there and things definitely look impressive thus far. I was overjoyed when I saw one of my "go to" BlackBerry apps was spotted running on the tablet OS as well. Poynt is being ported for PlayBook and is shaping up to be even better than it's BlackBerry OS counterpart. Unfortunately no solid video showing things off, but we do get some great screens to see how things are coming along.

Poynt looks awesome on the tablet and you can be sure with all that real estate it packs in some amazing features. If things are what they seem, Poynt should take full advantage of all the PlayBook has to offer including (hopefully) GPS (as we discussed in the last podcast) for all it's location features. In the latest BlackBerry App World commercial, Poynt takes its turn in the spotlight. What is perhaps the epitome of a "super app", Poynt is deeply integrated with the BlackBerry experience. The latest spot shows a couple using the app to get things done. I kind of enjoy seeing these commercials in the midst of my primetime TV viewing but I'll admit they are a bit cheesy. Carry on RIM :-)

You can do that too as Poynt will enter the event info to your calendar or email details to a friend. The new version is available now from m.poynt.com. Keep reading for the full press release.

Poynt

Multiplied Media or better known as Poynt to BlackBerry users have unveiled some new offerings to buisness owners out there looking to capture more of an audience. The system, which was unveiled at DEMO 2010 allows business owners to target Poynt users and offer them special deals and coupons based on their usage of Poynt. Say you want to search for a local restaurant and one the restaurants in the area is making use of the offer engine in place by Poynt, you can now get a special deal from that restaurant owner for say $5 off your meal if you go there. As the press releases defines it"

The Offer Engine is an easy-to-use, location aware turnkey advertising service that merchants large and small can utilize to set up just-in-time offers, specials and coupons to attract local consumers via their mobile phone.

The Poynt Offer Engine addresses the needs of the local merchant, from small businesses to multi-location national brands. Each can now effectively present offers in a simple, relevant and local manner. The Offer Engine uses our patented geo-fencing technology to deliver offers within a pre-defined geographic area, as determined by the merchant. When a customer moves into the geo-fenced area, they trigger offers to be delivered where and when they are looking to make a purchase. The consumer receives the ad when they are within the offer radius, but it is only once the consumer is in close proximity to the merchant’s business that the offer is activated and can be redeemed.

The Multiplied Media engine is friendly for end users and businesses alike. Users get the advantage of discounts and coupons while businesses get their marketing out there to consumers all while using a system which allows them to track metrics of how well they are doing. It's useful and beneficial advertising.
