Most Used Apps

Applications. They come and they go -- some remain in the daily use category and others go to the instant removal category. This year I have discovered quite a few different applications, and put them to use in different ways, but hit the break with me to find out what five applications I can't live without on my BlackBerry device.

While the new version lacks a change log at this point, for the most part it's just a bug fix release according to the info available.

Pandora

Pandora has just posted their latest release for BlackBerry users. You can grab the updated version via the Pandora website right now. New features and bug fixes are all included in the change log as well as support for the upcoming BlackBerry Style 9670 release.

New Features:

  • Support for BlackBerry Style 9670
  • Universal Search integration (6.0 OS)

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed some display issues that sometimes occurred when bringing Pandora into the foreground
  • Bookmark Artist was not showing the "Bookmark Added" message (even though the bookmark was actually added)
  • In 6.0, the popup context menu was showing after selecting menu items with the trackpad

I haven't had time yet to download this release so, be sure to leave some comments on how things are working for you if you grab it. Thanks to Mark for the heads up in the CrackBerry Forums.

Sync

Ford announced today partnerships with Pandora, Stitcher and OpenBeak that will allow for voice control via SYNC enabled vehicles. The new system will allow users to control their internet radio and update Twitter with steering wheel controls and voice commands. The SYNC-enabled applications will be available "through the same app store interfaces consumers currently use" ie. BlackBerry App World.

"To use OpenBeak, Pandora or Stitcher in the car right now, drivers have to take their eyes off the road and manually control the device," explained VanDagens. "Recent research shows that activity that draws drivers' eyes off the road substantially increases the risk of accidents. By allowing drivers to control the app through SYNC's voice commands and steering wheel buttons, we can hopefully reduce distraction for millions of drivers wanting to enjoy these apps during their commutes."

No exact date has been set for when the features will be available, but it should be sometime later this year. A SYNC SDK will be rolled out as well, allowing developers to modify and create mobile applications to work with the system. Check out the full press release after the jump.

Pandora App for BlackBerry A to Z

Best Streaming Media App

Pandora for BlackBerry was picked as the top streaming media app for BlackBerry in our Best of 2009 Awards, so we figured it would be worth giving it a quick A to Z for those of you who haven't tried it out. Pandora is totally free, and lets you stream custom radio stations to your device. You can create stations right from the app, and tweak them to your liking with Pandora's "thumbs-up" and "thumbs-down" buttons. The app syncs up with any stations you've created through the web or another device, and gives you a quick and easy way to stream music on the go. This is really a "no frills" app - its does what it needs to with no excessive options or erroneous features. Check out the video above for a look at what Pandora has to offer.

Free Apps

Were you one of the lucky ones to open that unexpected present and see a BlackBerry Smartphone staring back at you? If you were, you were probably filled with joy and excitement, and then as the day went on you began to think what else you could possibly need for it to function, or how you can make it a great counterpart of your everyday life. While there are endless amounts of ways to make the device your own, the hunt can be a difficult one because of just how much is available. As always, we are here to try and help make your hunt an easy and painless one.

Let's start with some free applications, because well, we all know the holiday's just passed and not everyone has money to spend on additional applications and such for their device. There are a lot more than this out there, but as a new BlackBerry owner we're just looking to help you get your feet wet in the world of BlackBerry and CrackBerry. Enjoy!

Pandora For BlackBerry Updated To Version 1.1.3

Shout out to Twitter folks for letting us know about a new Pandora update the other night. Seems this one actually has a lot of fixes and new features in it. The Pandora folks gave us the run down in the forums.

New Features

  • Support for account upgrades to Pandora One via the mobile device
  • Faster startup time, especially for listeners with lots of stations. One test with 100 stations showed startup time going from 14.25 seconds down to 8.2 seconds.
  • Station list sort order is now saved

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed volume-change issues triggered by some third-party apps, such as Vlingo
  • No more 8-hour session limit
  • Tour popup menus sometimes would act strangely

If you had any issues with the previous builds, you'll wanna grab the latest version for your device.

Slacker Pandora

It is good to be a BlackBerry user these days. Developers are embracing the platform and options exist today that didn't just a year ago. One of my favorite programs over these past few months has been Slacker Internet radio. Since I cancelled my satellite radio subscription, I have been using Slacker almost exclusively as a way to keep my music fresh and varied.

A few weeks ago, Adam let us know that Pandora Internet Radio (which had long been a favorite when I would stream music from my PC or Mac) was now available for the BlackBerry. Sadly, being a T-Mobile subscriber this wasn't available for us...yet. Just last week, a new update made Pandora available for T-Mobile customers (and, I presume, most others) in the US.

So, what do we do now? Which is the king of Internet radio for the BlackBerry? I did a full comparison and have my thoughts on the matter below.
