The OtterBox Defender Series case for the BlackBerry Torch 9850 and 9860 is overall one bada$$ case. It offers extreme protection from the harshest conditions and will certainly survive pretty much anything you can throw at it. The case itself is comprised of an inner hard shell and an outer silicone cover, giving it two layers of "you can scratch this" protection. Being a first responder I encounter some of the most intense environments on a daily basis. I always expect the most elite equipment to help perform my job while keeping me as safe as possible. I wanted to share with you guys my personal journey. No, it's not mind blowing or earth shattering but rather a little insight into my love/hate relationship with BlackBerry cases. Maybe you or someone you know can relate to my story. And to help you with your case issues, we're going to give one lucky reader their choice of OtterBox case for BlackBerry! In the beginning...

I got my first BlackBerry about three years ago. I use T-Mobile, and chose a Curve 8320, my GoldBerry, and I was hooked from day one. I had no clue how to use it, and still remember the first time I tried sending a picture via BBM, and how confusing it was. After having my BlackBerry for a few weeks, I began to see little scratches on the battery cover, and decided I should try to do something to protect my new little friend from further damage. I headed to the mall and hit up the T-Mobile store (at the time still quite naive to accessories and how to find them cost effectively) and ended up with a black skin case that hugged my Curve and gave me a little peace of mind.

Anyone familiar with the first Curve series knows that battery pulls were a way of life, and crucial to keeping the dreaded hourglass off my screen. (Again, this was before I knew what I know now, aka alt + shift + delete to reset.) I wasn't fond of having to remove the case what seemed like constantly to pull my battery, but I knew it was the prudent thing to do if I wanted to keep my device from having any more blemishes. Time went on, and for the most part I kept to the plan and Goldie kept her skin on.

In honor of Valentine's day being just around the corner I wanted to review a case that has a little bit of PINK in it, so I opted for the Black and Pink OtterBox Commuter Case for the BlackBerry Torch 9800. I've been a fan of OtterBox Cases ever since I got my first one for my old BlackBerry 8700, and over the years I've always had really solid experiences with their cases. That said, I have sort of mixed feelings on the Commuter Case for the Torch (note - I really love my Commuter for my Bold 9700/9780). On the pro side, it offers a great amount of protection and doesn't add too much bulk to the phone. Looking at the negatives, I find it makes the Torch a bit slippery to hold, the rubber buttons at times can behave a little awkwardly, and the long-term durability isn't quite to the same level as it is on OtterBox cases for other devices - specifically you may find with time the top piece that covers the slider portion of the Torch will want to come off easier than it should (this problem can affect most Torch cases that have a hard plastic shell - sliders make case design/durability tricky!). With OtterBox cases being on the more expensive end of the hard case spectrum, you may also want to check out the Innocase Surface and Mobi Products Hard Shell for the Torch. You can almost pick up three Mobi Products cases for the retail cost of one OtterBox, so it's something to think about. Check out the video review above for more details.
