Mindmaps

With a touch screen, we tend to look for more free flowing applications to help us in our daily tasks. While having a list we can look at is helpful, there’s something about a touch screen that has us looking for a more attractive way to visualize and manage projects, tasks, ideas and even goals. The BlackBerry PlayBook, to me, is the perfect sized tablet for making my To-Dos easy to read and easier on the eyes. Take away a physical keyboard (BlackBerry smartphone or computer keyboard that is) and it almost feels like I’m looking directly at what’s inside my brain (yeesh, I thought my bedroom when I was a kid was messy!). It’s just me and my noggin, trying to hash out ideas, making sense of the process. What a lot of people do is tap into the power of a mind map, whether it’s created on a black or white board, a notepad or a napkin.

Mindmaps allows you to do the same thing, except on your BlackBerry PlayBook and not on a mustard stained napkin. Not only does it help you keep track of the thoughts in your brain, but it also lets you manage the layout, colours and more. What was once a great idea may have to be put on the backburner. Mindmaps can help you move the idea around without having to scribble it out. There other mind mapping BlackBerry PlayBook applications out there, so let’s see how this one handles your crazy ideas.

Evernote for BlackBerry

I'm super excited that Evernote has just announced a bunch of awesome updates for the BlackBerry app. I just started using Evernote on my BlackBerry, PlayBook and computer, and it's helping me stay organized like never before. This update brings a ton of speed and some super cool new features.

When you launch the app on your BlackBerry, the first thing it's going to do is a Sync, pulling down thumbnails and basic info about your notes (titles, tags, etc). This allows you to browse your note list, even when offline. Since more of the note content will be stored on your device, browsing and opening notes is way faster now.

A feature that was missing all this time is the ability to create notes without a network connection. Now you can do just that, creating new notes with text, audio, and photos. Evernote will pin these to the top of your note list and mark them as pending. Once you are connected to the network again, they will sync to your account like normal. Another part of this, once you create or view a note on your device, it is stored locally, so you may view it again, even offline.

More app enhancements include:

  • Better Sync: Exiting the application during sync will pause the sync. It will pick up where it left off when you return.
  • Attach any file type: Free and Premium users can add any file stored on the device or SD card (as long as it falls under the size restrictions) to a note.
  • Better use of the SD card: Evernote makes better use of the SD card so that you can store more and retrieve things faster.

Evernote for BlackBerry PlayBook

I know a lot of people have been anxiously waiting for this app to come to the BlackBerry PlayBook, and it has finally released today. Evernote is a really popular app for BlackBerry and other platforms, that allows you to take notes, save voice recordings, pictures, and more and sync them from your smartphone to computer or other devices. Everything is kept in one place, and one of the coolest features is that all the bits are searchable, so you'll never lose that important piece of info again. Best of all Evernote is free!

There are tons of ways to use Evernote for your personal and professional life. Here are some ideas:

  • For research and class notes
  • For client and sales meetings
  • To stay in-sync with your desktop notes, web clips, and files
  • To snap photos of whiteboards and business cards
  • As part of your GTD system to help you stay organized
  • To record quick voice memos
  • Share an account with your spouse to keep shopping lists and more up-to-date

Conqu Main Screen

Conqu by AsFusion, is a powerful task management tool for your BlackBerry PlayBook that allows you to clear tasks from your inbox and keep all your to-do lists in one place. With Conqu, you can organize tasks according to your own personal criteria (For example I use CB, Personal, Day Care, Air Force etc.) and then accomplish those tasks at the right time and place for you (no WiFi needed). Conqu also allows you to assign a project, energy and the time you think it will take to complete said task. There are also even more options for customization such as filtering with tags and contexts.

The main features of the app are:

  • Unlimited everything: tasks, projects, contexts, contacts or tags
  • Filtering by contexts, tags, energy or time
  • Specifically designed for touch devices and tablets like the PlayBook
  • Future view to see what lies ahead in the next few days
  • Back burner view for tasks that you have to put off to do at a later time
  • Work offline: you don't have to be connected to the internet to be able to access all your tasks
  • Stay focused with views that are intelligently organized like TODAY and NEXT

The team over at AsFusion have even set up a roadmap that allows you to see what Conqu features are coming (Cloud Sync, Desktop Version & Recuring tasks are just some of what's listed) and the percentage towards completion. The icing on the cake is that this app is totally FREE!

SBSH Calendar Pro Now Available

Having been available as a beta for users for a while now SBSH has made their Calendar Pro app available for all. The SBSH Calendar Pro app is a more robust, feature rich calendar compared to what is included with your BlackBerry out of the box.

Advanced features such as colored time slots, built in task manager functions as well as multiple viewing options make calendar pro a great alternative if you need something a little more advanced then what RIM offers in the BlackBerry OS. SBSH Calendar Pro is a little pricey in my opinion but that said I'm not much of a calendar user. Others may find a great value in the $14.95 price point and a free trial is available in case you are on the fence. All devices OS 4.5+ are supported here.
