BlackBerry Torch 9850

If you fancy playing around with a BlackBerry Torch 9850 we have bad news -- you can't as of yet. But, you can now grab the device simulator and get as close as possible to the real thing for now. Given that this is a brand new device, meaning it's not from the Bold, Curve or even really the Torch series as we know it -- there is sure to be some surprises within the simulator. Most notably, the new keyboard layout is something to be on the look out for.

Since everyone always asks "What is this for?" when we post this kind of stuff -- it's a device simulator for BlackBerry developers to test their apps on. If you're not a developer or just generally have no interest in playing with a device you can't yet physically touch -- this isn't for you. Cool? Alright then, hit the links below to grab the install file.

BlackBerry Touch monza full spec sheet leaked

Getting the same treatment as the BlackBerry Bold Touch, the BlackBerry Touch monza / monaco has also now just had its full spec sheet leaked for all to see. Although at the top it does say Torch, that is presumably a typo in the information and this device now shows the model number 9860, where as the Torch 2 will carry the 9810 numbering. Naming of the processor appears to be left out on this spec sheet but given that it is also listed as 1.2Ghz it's pretty safe to assume it has the exact same as the BlackBerry Bold Touch. More details are after the break for you all.

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

* Update: The original poster of this video removed it from their youtube account as quick as they posted it, but luckily I we got it yanked from youtube in time (thx Bla1ze! I managed to get a copy recorded on my 9780 too). Check out the video again above. Enjoy! *

As I mentioned in our 2011 BlackBerry Smartphone Roadmap post, we're still not sure if the next-generation of full touchscreen BlackBerry is going to carry the Storm name or something different, but that hasn't stopped a Verizon branded version of it from popping up on youtube. Codenamed monaco, the device in the video should be rocking BlackBerry 6.1 along with the following specs:

  • Dimensions: Sleek, thin profile - 11.5mm thick (120 x 62 x 11.5 mm)
  • Processor: Qualcomm 1.2GHz Processor
  • Radio:Dual band CDMA, EV-DO Rev A, RX Diversity ; Quad band EDGE / Single Band UMTS
  • Display: 3.7" - 800x480 resolution, 15:9 aspect ration, 253 DPI
  • Camera: 5 MP - Flash - Image Stabilization - HD Video Recording (720p)
  • Navigation: Capacitive touch + BlackBerry navigation keys + optical navigation module. One convenience key
  • Memory: 4GB storage + 768MB RAM + up to 32GB MicroSD
  • WiFi/GPS: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n + GPS + Bluetooth 2.1 EDR + Mobile HotSpot
  • Connectivity: Micro USB - Bluetooth - NFC
  • Sensors: Magnetometer - Accelerometer - Proximity
  • Software: Enhanced BlackBerry SW v.6.1, BlackBerry Evolution 6, Open GL ES 2.0, APIs for magnetometer and augmented reality apps

With this device not really expected to be announced until BlackBerry World in May, there's still lots of time for RIM to work on the software. But all in all it's looking good! Check out the video above and drop us a comment with your thoughts. Let's hope we see a more in-depth follow up video in the not so distant future.

More images of the Blackberry Dakota, Apollo and Torch 2 posted

Research In Motions 2011 device line up has spilled out onto the web and while we got glimpses of it previously, the full on images have now been posted. Whether you're looking to be picking up a brand new Bold (Dakota), a new Curve (Apollo) or even looking to put yourself in a newer, faster BlackBerry Torch 2 it should be a good year for RIM all around. What about the Storm 3? Well we're still not sure RIM will even be keeping the Storm brand at this point but that device is looking pretty awesome and it's nice to actually have something more then just one individual picture to refer to when speaking about it. Personally, I like the code names Monaco and Monza better for it.

RIM hasn't strayed far from their current line up in the way of looks; they certainly have extended in the specs department providing if what we have seen thus far makes it to market. As we know, RIM has taken a lot of heat in the past for having their device specifications lower than those of others but this should level the playing field a little bit when people are looking at specs and nothing more. It should be an interesting year what with the PlayBook launching and now these new devices. Hit the break for some more images of the Dakota, Apollo and Torch 2.

BlackBerry Storm 3 codenamed Monaco; Montana a touchscreen Bold?!

First things first, we're slapping the big ol' rumor tag on this one. Take it all with a grain of salt. In fact make it rock salt because at this point none of this is fully confirmed. New rumors have been suggesting a couple of new devices that are now in the works at Research In Motion, one of which we may have gotten a sneak peak at previously and another that may just be a total rehashing of what once was Magnum/Dakota.

That said, let's clear a few things up while we're at it. The BlackBerry Storm 2 (9570) refresh was often referred to as the BlackBerry Storm 3 whether or not that was ever the intention we do not know but now that it's been pretty much taken out of the picture as far as we know, that leaves the slot open for a real BlackBerry Storm 3 device (most likely, this one). Every device needs a codename to go along with it and the BlackBerry Storm 3 has now been suggested as taking on the name Monaco internally. When it comes to specifications for the device well, we're not even going to suggest any at this point because really it would all just be speculation on our part and we don't think adding to the rumors will do anyone any good. So, until we can confirm indefinitely you all can speculate along with us.

Moving on now, a lot of talk has been generated over the past few days about the BlackBerry 9900 aka Pluto. This numeric offering is far from new as you can tell from the linked article. Its actually been floating around since even before the BlackBerry 9630 was released and got many folks into a tizzy expecting a Bold touchscreen device. What ever became of it? Well, it was revealed as the Dakota/Magnum which never actually saw the light of day beyond it's prototype, and now its popped up again for better or worse. Codename this time? Montana. Given the past history tied to this device and codename we're not going to be holding our breath for information on it. Either Research In Motion is digging up a device that was shelved long ago and redoing it or the rumors of Montana are just simply a little off base. Alas, that's the joy of rumors. Personally, if I had too pick one out of these two rumors to be true-- I'm rolling with the information about the BlackBerry Storm 3 what about you all?
