Fitness month is in full swing here at Mobile Nations and when creating a daily fitness routine how could I not include my BlackBerry? It's a permanent fixture during my workout for many reasons but most importantly: MUSIC! There's no way I'm stepping onto a treadmill or hopping on a bike without my ear-splitting, heart pounding, let's get this party started tunes. I'm nothing but a weakling standing on two sticks who'll fall off the machine (which I've done by the way) if I can't time each step with the bass beats of certain songs.

That's why I create playlists in my music library that are tailored to my specific workout and its duration. Trouble is there's a small little issue of storage when it comes to porting over my media library. The device's built-in memory and the 4GB SD card that came with my Torch 9800 just isn't enough. I decided to take the plunge and go all the way with a 32GB. My friends called me crazy, I said bring it on. With all of my custom ringtones, personal documents, cached radio stations, and my workout playlists there's no such thing as too much memory.

Mimoco's Mimomicro Card Reader & Drive

Mimomicro

The folks over at Mimoco have been around since 2005 with their flagship USB device, the MIMBOT, a fun and funky collection of USB drives. Now, they've released their new line, the MIMOMICRO miniSD card reader/USB drive. Not only can MIMOMICRO be used as a USB flash drive with a removable microSD memory cards (expandable to any size you desire), but it also functions as a microSD card reader to transport data between mobile phones, tablets, e-readers, digital cameras, and mp3 players to your computer. It makes sharing your data with the world that much faster and easier.

With microSD card inserted

MIMOMICRO features 3D sculpted characters and vehicles with a cap-free design and flip-out USB plug, built-in keychain and LED indicator light. Mimoco is introducing their exciting new line of personal tech devices at CES 2012 with brand-new Star Wars™ and DC Comics™ products. MIMOMICRO will be available in select retail stores such as Amazon starting in March 2012. I was lucky enough to score a Chewbacca drive to review and the little geek inside of me squealed (yes, literally) with excitement.

BlackBerry mass storage mode

There's a lot of memory installed in my BlackBerry. The Torch 9800 comes with 4 gigabytes of internal memory, and I have a removable 16 GB microSD card installed as well. Until recently, those cards were rather full. My BlackBerry goes where I go, so I usually have it filled with movies, music, ringtones, and anything else that strikes my fancy. My smartphone has so much memory available, I've stopped carrying USB thumb drives. Why would I when my BlackBerry can hold so much?

The Mass Storage mode on the BlackBerry is an extremely useful tool. Using a standard micro USB cable, I can attach the device to any computer and use the smartphone as an external drive. Since the BlackBerry uses standard USB drivers to connect, modern computers have no trouble connecting to and using the memory card(s) on the smartphone. Your BlackBerry will appear as one or more removable drives; you're able to transfer data to and from the device just like you would with a USB flash drive.

When my BlackBerry is attached to the computer as a drive, I'm a fanatic when it comes to that whole Safely Remove Device thing on Windows PC's; I'm sure there's a similar function on Mac's. I always worry about delayed writes or something else causing problems with my memory card if I unplug it too early. It's happened to me before, so I try to be careful.  Before detaching my BlackBerry from the computer, I always make sure to check that it's safe to do so.

So what happens when you want to remove or replace the microSD card from within your BlackBerry? Though some may argue this a useless step, I find it's a good idea to turn off my removable memory card first. That way, I can be certain that no data will be read or written as I remove the card. The process is slightly different depending on your OS.

One lucky member of the CrackBerry Nation will win one of these.  Read on for details.

16 GM microSDHC

Did you know that your BlackBerry is a voracious, memory-eating machine? Stills and videos taken with your BlackBerry camera, ringtones, music, email attachments, and even emails themselves take up memory. You need a memory card. To get the full use of the multimedia powers of your BlackBerry, you're going to need some space.

Once, I figured 8 gigabytes of storage would be enough. Then I started added entire albums, entire anthologies of work - twenty-six albums take up a bit of room. Digital backups of shows I own on DVD - every Simpsons DVD to date - take up their share of room, too. With 16 gigabytes of memory, I can store over 2,500 6-megabyte MP3's or more than 80 half-hour shows (about 175 MB each).

San Disk is a name I trust and with CrackBerry.com's reputation, I know the card is good. Twice, I've been burned by bad memory cards bought on ebay. Never again. The 16 GB strikes a nice balance of providing lots of space without breaking the bank. I know I'll certainly put it to good use.

Contest: Want to get one of these for free from ShopCrackBerry.com? Just leave a comment to this review letting us know what music or videos you'd put on a 16 GB memory card. Contest ends this Sunday at midnight PST. Please only leave a single comment. One lucky winner will get this shipped direct from ShopCrackBerry.com.

This Week's Featured Item: SanDisk 16GB microSDHC Card

SanDisk microSD

With all the flashy accessories out there now, the importance of an SD card is sometimes overlooked. Whether it is music, videos, pictures, or all your personal documents, these cards let us take all of our favorite data with us everywhere. Most BlackBerry devices do come with an SD card, but its usually 2GB or less - and for most of us thats just is not enough. The SanDisk 16GB microSDHC Card will take care of that problem.

The SanDisk 16GB microSDHC Card is a great solution for your media needs. On average it can store around 4,000 of your favorite songs, or 10,000-14,000 pictures. This is 8 times the capacity of the standard SD card that is included in most BlackBerry devices. The more storage you have the better. Using a memory card will keep all of your media files off of the device memory, allowing your device more free space for applications, and helping it to run better. Some users can get by with a small 2GB card, but if you want to maximize your storage, you really can't go wrong with 16GB (or even 8GB most times).

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

One of the first videos I ever did up for CrackBerry.com was a BlackBerry 101 on How to Install the MicroSD Card into your BlackBerry Smartphone. To this day it is still one of the most popular articles viewed on CrackBerry.com though back in October 2007 there were only a few BlackBerry device models on the market that actually accepted a MicroSD card. We're into 2010 now so I figured it was time to do a little update covering both MicroSD card installation and SIM card installation.

Warning: I did this video one take, no excuses. It's a bit long and tedious (I like vids to be 3 or 4 mins tops but dang there are a lot of BlackBerrys on the market these days), but seriously...I did a few extra takes and they weren't any better. But at least this way you can follow the trials and triumphs as I walk through the BlackBerry lineup starting with the Bold 9700 and going down the line to earlier devices. Since this topic of video has helped sooo many people over the years, I'll be sure to follow up in the months ahead with some shorter / concise by device model clips. In the meantime, enjoy the show. :)
