inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry

We've been talking about the inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry (aka "the BlackBerry watch") since we first posted the renderings of it almost a year ago. For those who've been waiting anxiously to be able to buy one of these bad boys, things are getting closer.  The watch is currently in a closed beta. While the beta testers weren't supposed to do any sort of reviews or posts on the watch while in beta, one tester just couldn't help but do up a video unboxing and walkthrough of his inPulse which you can watch below. It's a thorough unofficial first look.  Stay tuned to CrackBerry... our official beta review is coming soon. For more info on the inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry, visit getinpulse.com.

We've talked about the inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry quite a few times here on the CrackBerry blogs now, ever since we saw the first leaked photos, caught the official announcement and recorded a dummy unit video of it at CES.

We caught up with Eric of Allerta, maker of the inPulse Smartwatch, today at WES 2010 and finally got a chance to see this baby with its screen turned on. Check out the video above to get a glimpse of it. The watch will sell for $149 and is currently available for pre-order. You can jump over to freeupyourhands.com to learn more.

The folks from inPulse have broken some silence regarding the happenings with their inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry. Recently posted on their Tumblr blog they set out some expectations for those that have been taking advantage of pre order sales. While short and sweet, it's good news.

Long time no blog. We have some amazing news that we’re going to be sharing very shortly. Images, video and something that all you pre-order customers will be extremely happy about. inPulse is almost here.

Sweet! We like the sounds of that around here. The inPulse Smartwatch has been met with mixed feelings from its potential buyers. But realistically, we really haven't really got to see this thing in action yet either. Personally, I'm reserving my judgment till I get a better idea of how it works and how it fits into my personal needs. Sound off in the comments, you all in or on the fence here?

While walking through the BlackBerry booth at CES 2010 a short while ago I ran into the folks from Allerta. That's the start-up company out of Waterloo, Canada, that are working on the inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry Smartphones, or "BlackBerry Watch" as everybody undoubtedly refers to it as. The watch is still in development and they left their working prototypes back at home, but I tried on the shell quick to get a feel for it. Suffice to say, it looks and feels better than I expected. It's big, but not too big, and it's kind of funky. It fits with the look of today's sort of fashion watches. If it came with interchangeable straps or in a full metal strap version that could be pretty sweet. I'll be eager to get my hands on the real deal when they have it ready and put it through its paces. There's lots more to say but gotta keep this post short as I'm late for a meeting... stay tuned for more!

BlackBerry Watch

* Update 2 - October 26th, 2009 - the inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry Smartphones has been officially announced and is now available for pre-order! *

* Update - Just to be clear as I've seen some confusion in the commments, but as far as we know at this time the inPulse watch is not being made by/for BlackBerry (it won't feature a BlackBerry logo), but is being made for use with BlackBerry Smartphones. However, this is in fact "the BlackBerry watch" that has been referred to previously in articles dating back to WES in May. There isn't another RIM-built BlackBerry watch out there. *

Remember that story about a Bluetooth BlackBerry Watch accessory being in the works? In case you were doubting it, today we can say with certainty that it's happening, it's getting announced soon, and what you're looking at above (another image below) are actual renderings of the real deal. Key features we've been told so far about the BlackBerry-connected smartwatch by our source:

  • it has been designed specifically for use with BlackBerry Smartphones from the ground up - developed by a new BlackBerry-dedicated accessory company
  • it features an OLED screen that we hear is "big, bright and beautiful" and optimized for displaying text clearly, and thanks to OLED has solid battery life
  • it's designed to show you notifications and previews of messages arriving on your BlackBerry
  • judging by the filename of the photos as they were sent in to us, we're thinking it's going to be branded the inPulse smartwatch

The intent of the watch isn't to replace using your BlackBerry to view messages. Rather, it's for those occassions when your BlackBerry is tucked away - while in a meeting, while driving, or while you're out for a bike ride and you feel it vibrating in your camelback. When you get that impulse to stop what you're doing and pull out your BlackBerry, now you can quickly glance over at your inPulse and decide if you need to pull out your BlackBerry to address that message now or if it can wait fifteen minutes you're free.

Definitely a cool accessory. And because this smartwatch is desiged specifically for BlackBerry, we're thinking hoping that at somepoint the watch APIs will become available to BlackBerry app developers so even notifications from third party apps could be displayed. CrackBerry heaven! We'll bring you the official details on this when they emerge soon.
