Case-Mate Tough

One of the first things I do when purchasing a new BlackBerry smartphone is pick up a case. So it's no surprise that over the years I've accumulated quite a few. Some I've used, some are dented, and others have not been up to the task of having me as an owner. As Barney Stinson would say, my klutziness is, wait for it, LEGENDARY. People actually take bets on when the next drop will be. Now I own the Seidio ACTIVE case and holster for both my Torch 9800 and Bold 9900 but they have a tendency to lock up your device or be slippery in the hands. That's why after a little bit of searching through the CrackBerry Store I decided to check out the Case-Mate Tough Case and see if could withstand the rigors of daily use. What's the final verdict you may ask? Click on the jump to find out.

Seidio ACTIVE Case for BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930

I have a love/hate relationship with cases on my BlackBerry devices. One because I love the naked feel of them, especially the BlackBerry Bold 9900. However, I’m a klutz and prone to dropping my phone a lot so there’s a need for me to get a case to avoid getting scratches or dents on my BlackBerry phone. When looking for a case, I want something that isn’t too bulky but at the same time will give me the protection I need. I’ve been a huge fan of the Otterbox Commuter cases but started looking at other brands when I owned a Torch 9800 as I didn’t like the fit of their Commuter case. The Seidio ACTIVE cases looked the part and I thought I’d give it a go, especially since I do keep an active lifestyle. Keep reading for my review.

OtterBox Defender Series BlackBerry Torch 9850 9860

The OtterBox Defender Series case for the BlackBerry Torch 9850 and 9860 is overall one bada$$ case. It offers extreme protection from the harshest conditions and will certainly survive pretty much anything you can throw at it. The case itself is comprised of an inner hard shell and an outer silicone cover, giving it two layers of "you can scratch this" protection. The built-in screen protector is pretty sweet too although I did find it hard to type at times. Want to know more? Keep reading for my full review.

Check out the new iSkin Aura case, and enter to win your very own!

iSkin Aura back view

If you've seen any of my previous case reviews, you know I'm not generally a big fan of having a case on my BlackBerry. When I got my BlackBerry Bold 9900, I knew I was going to need something to keep it looking nice, but I didn't really want to get a case because the phone is too pretty to cover up. But soon the battery door, being plastic, was getting scuffed up from day-to-day use, and I decided it was time.

I had an iSkin case for my Bold 9700 that I liked, so I checked out their line of cases and found a new one for the Bold 9900/30 that looked awesome, the iSkin Aura. It's a really low profile shell case that protects the back and sides of the BlackBerry, while leaving open access to all the ports and buttons. There are cutouts in the back of the case as well, for the camera, flash, and rear microphone.

To be honest, I'm brutal on my BlackBerrys. They've been dropped in the street and bounced off all kinds of floors. Needless to say I've gone through quite a few since owning the Torch 9800 probably because I am a chronic klutz and hate using pocketbooks. it's a horrible combination but I prefer having my device holstered on my hip then packed away in a bag. While it makes my load lighter it increases the chance of serious injury to my BB. So I went for the case/holster combo.

Enter to win this awesome Speck Fitted case for your BlackBerry Bold 9700/80 - details below!

Speck Fitted case

BlackBerry cases aren't just for protection. Though keeping your BlackBerry safe is a top priority, there is nothing wrong with wanting a case that looks good while providing peace of mind. The Fitted case from Speck Products gives you both a unique look and durable protection in a snap together design. The back is covered with a classy black and white plaid fabric which makes it eye-catching as well as easy to grip. It's a hard shell case, which offers more protection than a shell or skin case. The back, sides, and front bezel are all covered, with cut outs for the camera and side buttons and ports.

I really enjoy using this case on my Bold 9700. It fits really well and looks awesome, and the texture of the fabric was a nice change from the norm. The only drawback I can see with this case is the potential for the fabric to look dingy after a lot of use, but I'm sure it can be spot cleaned as necessary - just don't forget to take it off your BlackBerry first. You can see a few more pictures after the break, and to get your own Speck Fitted case for your BlackBerry Bold 9700 or 9780 head on over to the CrackBerry store.

Contest: Want to win your very own Speck Fitted case for your BlackBerry Bold 9700/80? Leave a comment below and you could! One entry per person please, contest ends Sunday at midnight PST. Good luck!

A case is a case is a case, right? Well... A case for your smartphone should do at least two things. One, protect your BlackBerry in some way. Whether that's simply protecting it from dings and scratches or full-on drop-it-from-ten-feet-and-be-unharmed protection, a case should do its job. Just as importantly, you should still be able to use your BlackBerry once it's in the case. Quality cases do just that.

The Ultra Light Feather Case is one such product. The case comes with a cleaning cloth and screen protector. Like most cases, this one doesn't cover the screen; so that thin and replaceable piece of plastic guards your screen from dust and light scratches. The case itself is obviously very light and is made of a rigid plastic that tightly hugs the phone. Convenience, mute, lock, and volume keys as well as the charging and headphone ports are all accessed through cutouts in the case.

Since I was borrowing my sister's Curve 8900, I had to get the one in pink (they call it Magenta); but the Ultra Light Feather Case comes in a variety of colors for a large number of devices. Though it won't save your BlackBerry from a ten-foot fall, it will protect against the incidental dings and scratches of everyday use. And with several colors to choose from for many BlackBerry devices, you too can add a bit of "fashion flair" to your device.

This Week's BlackBerry Accessory Feature: OtterBox Cases

OtterBox Cases for BlackBerry Smartphones
OtterBox 9700 Commuter Case
(see all OtterBox products)

One afternoon last week in Las Vegas while Dieter and I were walking outside in front of the convention center leaving CTIA, a guy walking beside whipped his iPhone out of his pocket to answer a call but he somehow lost his grip and the iPhone literally went flying through the air before it smashing into the concrete. It happened quick and was painful to watch and both Dieter and I were sure that would now be an iPhone with a broken screen. But as the guy picked it up, I saw he had an OtterBox case on it. He dusted the phone off, all was good, and he kept going on his way as if nothing had happened. In this situation, I guarantee that would not have been the case had that iPhone not been wrapped in a hard case.

Even the best of us are bound to drop our BlackBerrys from time to time. It happens. The outcome of the situation depends on a lot of factors but one thing is certain - having some form of hard protection around your device will help it walk way from more abuse unscathed. I'm a big fan of OtterBox, so keep reading for your chance to win a one for your BlackBerry!

Contest: FIVE SmrtCases for the Tour to be won! Leave a comment to this post letting us know how you'd put the SmrtCase to use for you...

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

The folks at SmrtCase sent me out a few samples of their new patent-pending SmrtCase Glide for the BlackBerry Tour, and I was so impressed with the design and utility that I just had to whip up a video and blog it up right away (plus get them to provide a few freebies to give away to CrackBerry Nation!). It's a simple concept, and it really works.

The SmrtCase Glide is a hard shell-styled skin case, not unlike those in terms of look and feel of those offered by Seidio or Incipio or Case-Mate, but it features one major innovation - the ability to store and easily access cards from in between the phone and case. Think business cards, metro pass, hotel room key, office swipe card, student id card or college pay for meals pass, etc.. SmrtCase introduced the concept a while back for the iPhone and have now brought it over to the wonderful of world of BlackBerry, starting with the Tour and coming soon for the Bold 9700 and Storm2. We've seen PhoneSlipper integrate the same concept on their BlackBerry case, but their design is a bit bulkier and uses a thicker/softer rubber that I personally am not as much of a fan of. The SmrtCase design is minimalistic and really holds onto cards securely, yet maintains easy access to them. Be sure to watch the video above for a hands-on look and more details.

Contest Details: We have FIVE SmrtCase Glides for the BlackBerry Tour to be won. Just leave a comment letting us know how you'd put the SmrtCase Glide to use for yourself and you're entered to win. Please leave only one comment (multiples not counted). Entry deadline is this Sunday at midnight pst. *
