Let's face it - there is something about shooting off a slingshot and breaking things that is just plain old fun. Let's Break Stuff for the BlackBerry PlayBook lets you do just that. Armed with only your slingshot, you'll go through various levels firing at glasses, bottles, plates and more as you try to just, well, break stuff. You'll have to hit 100% breakage on each level to progress, which isn't as easy as it seems. Overall this is a great time killer and an awesome way to vent out some daily frustrration. Let's Break Stuff is available in BlackBerry App World for $1.99. A free lite is also available.

Pirate Wings

3D flying shooter Pirate Wings has made its way to the BlackBerry PlayBook. The game has been available on iOS for quite some time, and this is a direct port of that version (as noted by the "turn your iPhone" notice I got during the tutorial). Pirate Wings puts you inside a Star Fox-like ship while you race around 3D environments collecting powerups and firing off missles and mines.

Features include:

  • Races mode with 9 race circuits, 3 different environments (Canyons, Underwater world, Outer Space), 5 characters and 12 ships available for 3 levels of difficulty. Use your lasers, missiles, mines and boost to finish first.
  • Story Mode where you'll discover the incredible adventure of Raoul, a canyon pilot who will ally with the space pirates to avoid the trap of the defiant commander Burp in 13 original missions.
  • Ghost mode to improve your lap time and compare your scores online.

I'm really digging the game thus far. The controls are a bit tough at first, but once you get the hang of it they aren't too bad. We'll have a full review coming along shortly, but if you want to check out Pirate Wings for yourself, you can grab it for $4.99 in BlackBerry App World.

What's next for gaming on BlackBerry

BlackBerry Gaming

Gaming has never really been something that BlackBerry was known for. We've had the old-standby Brickbreaker since the start as well as a few good games here and there, but we never had the "latest and greatest". When the BlackBerry PlayBook was released, BlackBerry fans everywhere were overjoyed and gaming on the BlackBerry platform changed forever. With the new hardware, we could now have our share of great games as well. Things have come a long way in the last year, and moving forward to BlackBerry 10, it looks like they won't be slowing down.

At BlackBerry World 2012 this year there was a huge BlackBerry 10 vibe, but more so there was a great buzz about gaming. Plenty of big game companies like Marmalade and Gameloft were showing their support and excitement for the BlackBerry 10 platform, and that itself is truly something to look forward to.

As BlackBerry 10 approaches, more and more game companies are getting on board and either making new games for the platform, or porting existing titles over since RIM has been making it so easy to do so. Keep reading and we'll take a quick look at what we can expect for gaming on BlackBerry 10.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light

We first heard about Lara Croft and the Guardian of light quite a while ago, but it's been sitting high on my "want" list all along. Today we get a nice surprise as the game is finally available for download in BlackBerry App World. I've only been playing it for a few minutes, but I can already say I'm hooked - and totally pumped to play through it.

Join Lara as she ventures deep into the jungles of central America in search of the Mirror of Smoke, a powerful artefact from a lost age. Whoever wields this item holds the future of mankind in his hands, with the power to rid the world of light. With the Mirror now in the hands of Xolotl, the God of Darkness, Lara and Totec, the Guardian of the Mirror, have until sunrise to defeat him or else plunge the world once again into an age of darkness.

The 3D graphics are awesome and it runs super smooth on the PlayBook. If you're at all a Tomb Raider fan (and honestly, who isn't?) then you should definitiely pick this one up. Grab it for $3.99 in BlackBerry App World.

Plants versus Zombies

First Angry Birds and Bejeweled, and now Plants vs. Zombies is coming to the BlackBerry PlayBook? The trifecta of casual gaming is nearly complete! While we did get a quick look at it during CES, EA has announced that the home-defense/gardening strategy game is now available on RIM's tablet. Unfortunately, there still isn't a live link in BlackBerry App World.

The game includes 50 levels, throughout which you need to pick and chose from an array of defensive plants that attack hordes of ill-equipped zombies. Some have snorkeling gear to get through the pool, others have pole vaults to get over your Wall-nuts, while others still have bungee cords to bypass all of your carefully placed plants. Collect sunshine points as they randomly pop up so you can keep planting, and collect cash to upgrade your armory of vicious flora.

No word on pricing yet, but I would expect it in the $7 range. It's worth it, trust me. EA's blog post is pasted after the jump.

When popular titles from other platforms make their way onto BlackBerry we tend to get rather excited, and for me that was definitely the case when Backbreaker 2 Vengeance arrived in BlackBerry AppWorld for the BlackBerry PlayBook. For those unfamiliar with this title it is a football game but with its very own style, you aren't playing team verse team but instead it is a 1 on 1 style game play.  You can chose whether to take an offensive stance in which you need to avoid getting tackled and make it through some obstacles to score a touchdown or you can go for the defensive approach and prevent the computer from being able to score on you.

The game utilizes both on screen controlls as well as the gyroscope of the device so you will have to tilt the device from side to side to control where your player goes. With the on screen controls you can juke left and right as well as spins in each direction, and if you are feeling really good about passing the defenders you can showboat a little as well for some extra points.

What I like most about the game is that you aren't playing a four quarter full length game here, but instead quick little matches so if you want to pick it up for a few minutes and then put it back down you are able to do so. For only $2.99 you can have yourself a game with amazing graphics, interactive game play and hours of fun. Hit the link below for full details and to grab a copy for yourself.

Blackjack King Blackjack King

During the past couple of weeks Magmic has been churning out not only OS 7 themes but games as well. Their newest edition, Blackjack King BETA, is an awesome card game that looks and feels just like their successful Texas Hold'em King Live application. As this is a BETA there a couple of bugs but they are encouraging you to send in your feedback before its official launch.

Blackjack King plays great on my BlackBerry Bold 9900 and overall is perfect for passing the time. Animations are smooth and I seem to be on a winning streak unlike other casino games I've played where the dealer always wins. It comes packed with a ton of features including earning achievements and trophies and choosing between the regular game or their daily challenge. You have the choice of purchasing chips or logging into your account each day to earn chips for free.

Features

  • Daily Challenges

  • 30 Stylish Avatars to choose from
  • 8 standard decks
  • Twitter integration to share your scores with your followers

It's compatible with BlackBerry 8520/30, 93XX, 9500, 97XX, 98XX, and 99XX and is FREE in BlackBerry App World while its in Beta. Tank Recon 3D

Tank Recon 3D first popped up over a year ago for the BlackBerry Storm2 and after a long overdue update is now available for the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930, Torch 9810 and Torch 9850/9860. This first person tank shooter features real-time 3D graphics that make it one of the most fun games on the platform.

Piloting your new advanced tank, code named Alpha, you will be shooting it out with various units such as tanks, planes, AT guns and more. Fire your main cannon and watch as the enemy explodes into pieces. Use your guided missiles to bring down enemy planes or anything else that needs blowing up!

Tank Recon 3D allows you to choose between Mission and Survival mode. Jump right into the action with Survival mode and see how long you can survive. The longer you last the harder the enemy units become. When you're done, submit your high score to the Internet for bragging rights.

Play Story Mode to go on various missions that will ultimately decide whether you defeat the Evil Hepion forces or explode trying. Playing through the missions takes time and is no easy task but fortunately the game supports saving your progress at any point. If you do manage to complete the missions, try them again but this time choose Hard or even Mental!

I've been rocking Tank Recon 3D on my Bold 9930 for a few days now and I absolutely love it. The touchscreen controls are easy and super responsive and the game features loads of replay value. A new version for the BlackBerry Playbook should be on the way very soon as well. Hit the link below for more info.
