Growing up I loved playing video games. My favorite though happened to be racing games like Pole Position, Mario Kart, or any of the ones at the local arcade including one where you sat on a replica of a motorbike. So it was a no brainer that I had to try Moto X Mayhem by Occamy Games for the BlackBerry PlayBook. It's one of those games that keep you occupied for hours.

My other job is running an in-home day care/pre-school. A big part of my day is helping the 4 year olds meet certain requirements before they enter Kindergarten. The biggest obstacle is learning and being able to recognize their ABCs. Enter in the fun interactive BlackBerry PlayBook app by Vostrix called AbcDay. The kids get to sing, pop bubbles & draw with a turtle all while learning those essential building block, the ABCs.

Features include:

  • Reading time!
    Recognize letters with cute animals.
See the cute animals move, hear them making cute voices, and also learn the animal's name
.
  • Writing time!
Help the turtle catch the stars and draw the alphabets.
Kids will learn how to write alphabets by following the stars guidelines.
  • Play time!
Tickle the shell to peek on the cute animals, and complete the alphabet quiz.
This is a fun way to do memory test for kids. Kids can pop the bubble to pick the right letter to complete the animal's name.

  • Sing along!
Pop the bubbles and sing the alphabet song.
Kids can pop the bubble to reveal each animal behind the alphabet-song bubble. Tired of hide and seek? Kids can also just watch the alphabet bubbles floating while the song is playing.
  •

Each section of this app comes with a unique alphabet-song music; from cheerful reggae to a relaxing version, the music itself can put kids to sleep!

AbcDay is available for $2.99 in BlackBerry App World. There is also a FREE Lite version in which only one level, reading, is unlocked.

UNO HD for the BlackBerry PlayBook

[youtube link for mobile viewing]

UNO is not just any other game. It's more like an institution. How many of you out there played this game in one form or another growing up? I know I can't remember a time I wasn't UNO'ing with my parents on the kitchen table. Yes, we did in fact make up a word to describe our addiction. While you can't jump up and slam down a card while screaming UNO, all the classic elements are there at your disposal, including some new rules, all thanks to Gameloft. The version on the BlackBerry PlayBook is similar to ones released on iOS and Android and I'm thrilled it's finally come to the PlayBook.

Bubble Birds updated - Now with free version!

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

Just over a week ago, we posted on a new game from XIMAD called Bubble Birds Premium. The game is similar to your classic bubble popping game, but with birds and in bright colors. You simply match 3 or more of the same colored birds together to pop them off the playing area. We just got word that the game is now available in a free version. The free version does contain ads, but they don't seem to be too annoying or intrusive, and hey, its FREE. Oveall the game is a great time waster, and quite addictive. You can pick it up for most devices running OS 4.6 and up.

One of my all-time favorite BlackBerry games Fierce Towers has just been updated to version 1.8. The new release brings some great new features that truly help make it one of the great tower defense games on BlackBerry. Back in May I did a mini-review and pointed out the finer points as well as what the game lacked, and I have to say the new version does not disappoint. Updates include:

  • Damage bonus for fully upgrading tower.
  • Assorted bug fixes.
  • New scoring system.
  • Displays tower range when tower is highlighted.
  • Points are displayed when enemy is killed.
  • Optional tower level indicator to see how many times a tower has been upgraded.
  • Upcoming waves are displayed.
  • Tower info is now available to display tower damage, range, and cost for each upgrade.

To celebrate the release, both Fierce Towers and Candy Defense are on sale for 50% off until August 2nd. So you have no excuse not to check out these sweet games - hit the links below for more.

It's nearly seven days ago to the minute that we announced the availability of Pinball Deluxe for BlackBerry here on the CB blogs. It quickly shot up the CrackBerry App Store's Best Sellers list and is currently the #1 Best Selling Game in the catalog (it's not available via App World yet), maintaining a 5-star rating and gaining a lot of positive reviews. Coming from Mobigloo, makers of the uber-popular Nintaii for BlackBerry, Pinball Deluxe is available for pretty much every device model, is easy to play, is a lot of fun with nice graphics and smooth game play. If you didn't pick it up last, it's one to grab right now so you have it to while you're relaxing this Memorial Day weekend.

Win a Free Copy of Pinball Deluxe: If instead of buying it outright you'd rather try your luck at winning a free copy of Pinballl Deluxe, we've got 100 free copies to give away. To enter, simply leave a comment to this post letting us know what's the next type of gameboard theme you'd like to see Mobigloo put into the game next (personally I've always been a HUGE fan of the original Twilight Zone Pinball, so anything space related is good with me). Just leave one comment. We'll let this one run until the end of day Monday,  May 31st. Just leave one comment please. Good luck!

Fieldrunners is one of my favorite tower defense games - it is super easy to pick up and play, and highly addictive. That being said - the BlackBerry version doesn't really hold its own against other platform versions. I was excited to try it out when I heard it was available, but after a few hours of play, I found some drawbacks that just make it a no-go in my book. A few gameplay "quirks" and the random lag make other tower defense games much more appealing. Fieldrunners also rings in at a whopping 5mb - purely insane for a BlackBerry game. If you're a glutton for punishment and want to try this out for yourself, you can grab it from from BlackBerry App World for $6.99. Check out the video above for my review.

W00t!! Pinball Deluxe for BlackBerry Smartphones is now available!! We brought you a sneak peek of Pinball Deluxe from Orlando at WES 2010 last month. I was excited about it then and I'm even more excited now to see it released. BlackBerry has been lacking a good "pinball" game and the great thing about Pinball Deluxe is that the developer Mobigloo has made it available for pretty much every BlackBerry device model, touchscreen and non-touchscreen, from OS 4.2 and up.

The game graphics are bright and clean and look good. The game play smooth and physics are realistic. They've packed in lots of features. There's language support for English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. If you own a BlackBerry and have found yourself always coming back to BrickBreaker to kill the time and not trying anything new, I think this is a game you'll definitely enjoy. It's easy to pick up and just play. The cost is $4.99. The only bad news here is the lack of a free trial, but after the hours I've already spent playing on it I'm pretty sure it's a game purchase you'll be satisfied with. Follow the link below for more info, screen captures and to buy. Don't blame me if you kill your weekend playing it. ;)

[This review comes to us from Brian W. If you have any stories/reviews of your own you can send them along to editorial(at)crackberry.com and they may get posted up on the front page]

This is big news to Street Fighter and 2D fighting game lovers, Street Fighter is now available for BlackBerry devices! As expected there have been some changes to make the game playable for the BlackBerry but none of these changes have diluted the core Street Fighter experience.

The game runs smoothly for the most part on the Bold 9700, only experiencing hiccups when your phone is trying to connect to a network. Using the BlackBerry keyboard as a controller for this type of game takes some getting used to. S,D and F keys act as back, down and forward which takes some getting used to initially but feels natural after about 5-10 mins with the game. The original version of the game has 6 buttons for attacks wheras the BlackBerry version has only 3. punch, kick and super serve as your attack keys and although this might seem like a dumbing down of the original game, it works extremely well. Combinations and special moves can be performed with ease after coming to grips with the new layout. Compared to the BlackBerry version of Super Street Fighter II, which uses a 6 button layout, this system feels intuitive and natural.

One month ago to the day I made a blog post here about the availability of Tank Recon 3D for the BlackBerry Storm2, which is an awesome first person shooter game that puts you in the seat of a tank as you go through various missions shooting down planes, AT guns, tanks and more. When I first made the announcement post about Tank Recon 3D I only posted a couple of screen captures, but now we have two videos (one above, one below) you can watch that show off Tank Recon 3D's gameplay and 3D graphics in much more detail. I've spent quite a few hours now playing this game on my BlackBerry Storm2 - it definitely gets my two thumbs up!

Tank Recon 3D Promotion - Save $2: Lone Dwarf Games, the developer of Tank Recon 3D, have created 500 coupon codes (first come first serve) that will knock $2 off the price when you used in our mobile app store or on-device CrackBerry Superstore. A show like WES is always exciting for BlackBerry users because it's sure to yield some big corporate announcements from Research in Motion. My personal favorite reason for attending mobile conferences isn't just to experience first hand what's getting officially announced at the keynotes, but rather to see what I can unofficially discover among the thousands of people in attendance.

Case in point... tonight at the lobby bar we cornered a BlackBerry game developer we recognized and scoped out the latest in-development titles running on his device. I got super stoked to see Pinball Deluxe for BlackBerry. BlackBerry Smartphones have been lacking a good pinball game and this one looks awesome. The game play on the Storm2 was super smooth and fun and the good news here is that the game is going to be compatible and run on pretty much all BlackBerry device models. If RIM wants to shake things up on OS 6.0 and changeup the default game from BrickBreaker, then Pinball Deluxe has my vote. I was digging it (immediate fun factor). No word on release date yet, but we'll let you know when it's available. Be sure to check out the video above to see it in action.

Back on St. Patty's day we announced here on the blogs that Need for Speed Shift 3D for the BlackBerry Storm2 finally hit App World. This is one of the games that was demoed back at the BlackBerry Developer showing off RIM's newly announced Open GL APIs. With the 3D version of the game now available for the Storm2, I gave it a download and walkthrough and also compared to the 2D version available for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 (does not support Open GL) as well as the version of Need for Speed Shift available for the iPhone in Apple's App Store. Watch the video above to see how it unfolds and read on for some more details.
