We first took a look at Sand Slides by Logik State last December. While watching the video, the game itself looked pretty easy but trust me, it's not. Check out the link to Alicia's review for the full details and features but the basic gist of the game is to get the colored grains of sand to fall into the appropriate color-coded silo crates at the bottom. You can do this by drawing lines on the playing field to guide them to the correct silo crate. The catch and difficulty level come into play with only being able to draw a limited number of lines and each silo is time sensitive. If you accidentally get the wrong color grains into an incorrect silo crate, the grains counter at the top will decrease. The game is over when the counter hits zero.

There isn’t a way to pause the game right now so be prepared to completely ignore the rest of the world when you’re on a roll. In fact, the only addition I could see to make this game even better would be a way to pause the game (possibly a swipe down from the top bezel can be implemented). Sand Slides has been a popular game on the iOS platform and now I can see why. This is a great addition to my BlackBerry PlayBook game collection.

Right now Sand Slides can be downloaded from App World for FREE (regular price is $1.99) so if you've been waiting to give it a try, now's the time to jump on it. Since the game’s release date back in November of last year, it’s received nothing but 4 or 5 stars from those who have played it. If you’ve already tried the game, leave a few tips or comments for our readers in the comment section below!

Advanced Calls and LED Control

I'm an avid fan of the popular LED notification light app called BeBuzz (aka BerryBuzz). The biggest complaint from most people about the app is the price tag. There are similar apps out there that offer almost the same experience at a fraction of the cost but most don't even come close to the original...until now. When glancing through the forums, I ran across Advanced Calls and LED Control by Sultan Al Sooz. With this free, yes I said FREE, app you have an unlimited amount of possibilities and extra uses on your phone. Not only does the app give you a variety of LED color choices for your notifications, you also get some pretty cool call control features as well. Keep reading after the break for all the juicy details on this fantastic FREE app!

Rdio

*UPDATE* - Looks like the mobile apps portion is still limited, bad wording on their post. @RdioHelp confirms mobile access still requires a Unlimited accnt. But they still offer a 7-day free trial.

While we could debate the streaming music services available these days, including BBM Music -- I'm personally fond of using Rdio. For a number of reasons really. They have a great selection of music, support multiple platforms and their mobile apps are great -- including their support for BlackBerry devices. Now, they've gone ahead and made things even better for those looking to get in on the services:

Some of the best things in life are free, and starting today, Rdio is one of them. New Rdio users in the US can take advantage of many of our popular features for free, including streaming full songs without hearing a single ad — a meter at the top of your profile will show you how much free music you have each month.

An email address or Facebook account is all you need to start listening for free, and no application downloads or credit cards are required. Just sign up at rdio.com or through one of our mobile apps to get started.

You can sign up using your Facebook account but they do offer the email sign up as well in case you don't have a Facebook account. Overall you can't really beat ad-free music which is available for streaming to your device. Give Rdio a shot, it's a really great service.

Free Chess for BlackBerry

Here's a fun addition for those of you that like having games on your BlackBerry. Free Chess v1.3.1 by Solverlabs was recently released in the CrackBerry store, and as the name implies it is FREE, which is great to see. The game features five levels of difficulty for play against the computer, with the first being super easy. If you're a beginner, this is the level for you. When you click the piece you want to move, the game shows you which spaces you can move to. I played around on this level a bit even though I know how to play Chess, and even when I set up the opponent to take my piece, it typically wouldn't. That's kind of cool I think, so that you can get a feel for the way each piece can move around the board. If you can't finish the game in one sitting you can save and reload your match at a later time.

As mentioned, this is a free app, which means it is ad supported. I didn't find the ads to be intrusive, but if you download this version and they really bother you, there is also a paid version available in BlackBerry App World. It looks like Free Chess is available for all devices running OS 4.6 and above. The Torch (and BB6) was not listed but I took a chance and downloaded it and had no problems playing in portrait mode. Landscape mode didn't display properly, however.

The description also mentions being able to play in 2-player mode. I didn't see this option in the free version, so I'm guessing that is another perk of the paid version.

Free Newegg app for BlackBerry now available in BlackBerry App World

Like buying electronics? Of course you do, everyone does at some point. Newegg, has made the process of buying electronics from them on the go even easier for better or for worse. They've just released a mobile app to BlackBerry App World which allows you to browse and purchase items directly from their site on your BlackBerry smartphone. Some of the key features for the app:

  • Comprehensive product specifications.
  • 1.7+ millions customer reviews.
  • Detailed item image gallery.
  • Quick and simple shopping flow.
  • Simple and quick search function.
  • Good for deal hunting: Shell Shockers, Daily Deals and Free Shipping.
  • All purchases made on Newegg Mobile are routed through Newegg's secure servers.

The sad news? Well, despite BlackBerry App World indicating that it is indeed available for all devices, it is not. Although I did not test all devices, I can confirm it's not yet available for the BlackBerry Torch (unless it's just blocking me in Canada). Which really, is fine with me at this point. The last thing i need in my life is an easier way to buy electronics. But if you're looking to spend  some of that cash you got for the Holidays then by all means, check the app out. Some great deals are to be had on Newegg.

Bubble Burst

Tafasa is back again with another entertaining game for your BlackBerry. Bubble Burst is a color matching game where you try to score big by popping the largest set of the same color bubbles. The more bubbles in your set, the more points you earn. Bubble Burst has four different modes to choose from: Standard, Shift, Continuous, and Megashift. While each mode has the same basic gameplay, each has a variation to keep things interesting. You also have the option to turn the colored bubbles into white shapes on a black background which is ideal if you are color blind. You can save statistics such as high score, average score and number of games played for each mode.

Bubble Burst has a paid and a free (advertisement supported) version, and supports most all devices. I tried out the free version on my BlackBerry Torch, and while the ad is there at the bottom of the game screen, I really didn't even notice it. I know some of you out there can't stand ads at all, so if you prefer your game without, you can pick up the full version of Bubble Burst on sale for $0.99 in the CrackBerry store.

It's a busy week here at CrackBerry. Most of the team is off to San Francisco for DevCon, and we are all anxiously waiting to hear what news RIM has to share with us. FML releases official BlackBerry application for free

There has been many applications which allow you to access FML in the past, some remain and some are now long gone. This one however, is the official application and provides quite a few features over the others that are currently available. Things such as logging into your own account, submitting your own FML scenarios are all supported through the official release. Of course, I must do my due dilligence and advise that the application does indeed provide some NSFW material. So, keep that in mind when downloading and accessing the application.

The FIFA 2010 WorldCup is set to kick off on June 11th in South Africa, and if you are looking to keep up with all the action, you'll certainly want to have grab the app that was released by the folks over at S42 and ZonaBlackBerry. The app itself looks great on your device and is available in both Spanish and English. With access to live score updates, calendar integration and team statistics, you'll want to have this on hand just to ensure you don't miss anything. Storm users - yes the app will work, but you may have issues navigating as it was designed without a touchscreen UI.

For people having issues with the language shown in the app, within the app press the MENU Button > Configuracion > in "Seleccione su idioma" pick Ingles, then press "Guardar"... the app will tell you that it needs to close the app to take the new settings. When you open it again it should be in English.

Allstate Mobile for BlackBerry Allstate Mobile for BlackBerry

The Allstate Mobile app has been available for a few months now, but I didn't catch it in BlackBerry App World until this past weekend. I've been in search of new, useful apps as of late and being an Allstate customer, this one fit the bill. With Allstate Mobile, you can quickly access all of your account information, including policy details and claim information. Everything is quick and easy to navigate, and will save you some phone calls should you need to get at your account on the go. If you are in an accident, the app provides support allowing you to take the proper steps, including gathering info that can be emailed to yourself and your Allstate agent. Hopefully this isn't an app you'll need to use every day, but it can very handy should the need arise. Allstate Mobile is available in BlackBerry App World as a free download.
