Ryan's most-used apps 2011

Year after year, I can honestly say I install more than my fair share with applications. Between beta testing, reviews and my own curiosity, I’m surprised that any of my BlackBerry smartphones haven’t screamed “Enough!”. With that in mind, I try to keep my BlackBerry smartphone as clean as possible. If I don’t use an application frequently, it’s uninstalled. For the few I do hold onto, I don’t actually realize how much I use them as it becomes simply second nature to me. Many apps have come and gone, but a select few I still keep close at hand. Check out my most-used apps of 2011.

Fixmo Tools 2.5

Oh Fixmo Tools, do I ever get tired of talking about you? No, I don’t. It’s part of a small number of applications that has traversed the journey from smartphone to smartphone with me. I review a lot of applications (and by a lot I mean a WHOLE WHACK), and Fixmo Tools is one of the reviewed few that I hold onto. Why do I hold onto it? Inside is a suite of applications (an arsenal you could say), that extends upon the functionality of whatever model of BlackBerry smartphone I may be using. It has saved me time and again by reversing accidental message deletion, alerting me of potentially inappropriate outgoing emails and providing me handy screen capturing capabilities. These of course are but a few of the options Fixmo Tools comes with. If I had run into the team at BlackBerry DevCon 2011, I would have hugged them (and then probably would have shared in an awkward, silent moment afterward).

When I first received my BlackBerry Bold 9900, I discovered that, sadly, Fixmo Tools was not yet OS 7 compatible. I said “until we meet again” to a dear friend (well I didn’t actually say it, that would have been crazy). So recently, Fixmo Tools was updated to version 2.5 and with it came a couple of new features. Now compatible with OS 7, I couldn’t wait to see what else was new.

Fixmo Web Messenger

The name Fixmo has been seen around CrackBerry.com quite a few times; whether it’s been the ever evolving Fixmo Tools application or the tethering Fixmo Extend. Last month, Kevin informed us that Fixmo had entered a BlackBerry Messenger desktop client into public beta – aptly named Fixmo Web Messenger. Once installed on your BlackBerry smartphone, you can access the Fixmo site to log in. Using any browser, you can use Fixmo Web Messenger to access BBM and OMG and LOL to your hearts content. Both Mac and PC are supported. Features include:

  • BlackBerry Messenger from any web browser on PC or Mac (flash support required)
  • Secured communications between the web browser and the BlackBerry device to ensure your communications remain safe
  • Access the Fixmo Web application through either: the Fixmo website, the Fixmo Web Messenger iGoogle gadget or the Fixmo Web Messenger Facebook application
  • Browser "Pop-out" option to always keep BBM visible on your PC
  • New incoming message alert - browser tab "flashes" when new BBM comes in, so you can keep your BlackBerry on silent.

Now it’s a little tricky when navigating the Messenger application in the browser – you have the menu and back button that work well, but I found the scrolling buttons to be unresponsive at times. It can handle both one on one or group messaging. There was a lag when it came to the display, as well. My BlackBerry would respond almost instantly to the commands executed from the browser, but the browser display would be roughly 2 to 3 seconds behind. The application is still a great way to be a little more discreet when using BlackBerry Messenger. Fixmo Web Messenger is currently on Sale for $2.99 (from $4.99) at the CrackBerry AppStore. A free trial is also available.

Fixmo Tools 2.0

Fixmo Tools is one of the BlackBerry Applications available that I do get excited about. I don’t know if it’s the slew of functionality it possesses or, for some reason, I can’t help but think of the Dark Knights utility belt. If you’re looking for an application to help both enhance existing BlackBerry awesomeness and bring new equipment to the game, Fixmo needs to be on your list. It’s been almost a year since I reviewed Fixmo Tools; it was a young, yet powerful application that has grown up immensely. In the latest update (2.0), they have added even more functionality. So much so, that they should consider calling it Fixmo Toolshop.

Rather than going over what was covered in the past, have a read of the earlier review and come back to read up on what is new in 2.0. Yes we know about undeleting items, yes we know about memory and battery management. We know it, we love it, we want to see what else is being served up. I expect a lot – knowing their track record and the fact they acquired Chocolate Chunk Apps AND brought aboard Fabian Heuwieser. I know I won’t be disappointed.

Fixmo

Fixmo Tools, nominee for the Best OS Enhancement 2010 CrackBerry App Award, is by far one of my favorite BlackBerry apps. It's no surprise then I was more than excited to hear that version 2.0 is right around the corner. The current version of Fixmo includes some awesome features like Undelete, Forward/Reply with Edit, Flame Retardant, Silencer, Battery Watch and Memory Monitor. To make version 2 even better and to solidify their position as one of the best BlackBerry apps and app companies out there, Fixmo has aquired Chocolate Chunk Apps (Wifi Media Backup, VLC Remote Control) and Fixmo Tools 2.0 will include many of the features of those apps. In addition, Fabian Heuwieser (who is no stranger to CrackBerry or BlackBerry apps) will be joining up with the Fixmo team as well (look for Later Dude Pro to be part of Fixmo 2). So all said and done we have some BlackBerry app M&A activities going on that should only lead to a better Fixmo!

In celebration of the news the folks at Fixmo have hooked up some awesome discounts for CrackBerry readers on Fixmo Tools, all Chocolate Chunk apps and LaterDude Pro. Use the coupon codes below to save!

Keep in mind the coupon codes will only work in our mobile store or through the mobile store client from your device. Act now and take advantage of these sweet offers while they last and keep on the lookout for Fixmo Tools 2.0!

Xtreme Labs releases Antenna Meter For BlackBerry

With the internet still buzzing over the whole iPhone 4 Antennagate debacle, Xtreme Labs has teamed up with the folks from Fixmo Tools to help create Antenna Meter. The application itself is pretty straightforward. It allows you to test out different "death grip" scenarios and visually measure what, exactly is going on with the device while doing so. Does your signal drop? If so, by how much? You can also share your stats with others via email. Of course, we would be remiss if we didn't also mention that same information can be gained by pressing ALT NMLL on your devices keyboard. After which, your "bars" will then be displayed as more accurate dBm levels. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to grab a few things in preparation for the iPhone 4 launch in Canada.

During our WES 2010 Solutions Showcase CrackBerry Power Tour we stopped by the Fixmo Tools booth where Rick Segal let us know about the latest version (RIM's Mike Kirkup also let us know he loves this app - the Flame Retardant feature has come to the rescue on more than one occassion). Following that up, here are the details of what's new in Fixmo Tools version 1.1:

  • Dynamic application download framework used to deliver to new applications to the Fixmo Tools suite on an ongoing basis.
  • Four New Utility Apps included with this release:
    • MeetMe, a tool that enables you to easily arrange a meeting by automatically selecting available times on your calendar and inserting them into an email.
    • Speedtest which measures the download and upload speeds of your network.
    • Call Indicator, a utility that allows you to set a different LED color for phone calls so you can easily distinguish them from other message alerts.
    • OneLastCall, which provides a way to enable radio support when your battery level is very low. OneLastCall is available only for OS versions before 5.0.
  • Multi-calendar support for Silencer and Undelete.
  • Fixes for Flame Retardant to address issues such as emails getting blocked without warning.
  • Performance fixes to address startup time and other "lag-time" and memory leak issues.

Why is it that we are never satisfied? Why do we look for the slightest chance to improve upon something? Perhaps we have a built in desire to consistently outperform; the need to make something faster, smarter…better. It won’t happen in our lifetime, or even in the next few lifetimes, but I would love to see when humanity finally reaches the ultimate pinnacle of perfection and a single thought is collectively voiced;

“So, um, what do we do now?”

In a world, where existence relies upon constant communication, the human race cries out for more. With BlackBerry in hand, we march towards a common goal; to augment our already amazing Smartphones. Staring at the vast world of BlackBerry applications, one must decide how they will choose. One application dares to state that it will make your “Smartphone smarter”. That application is Fixmo Tools. Comparing itself to a utility belt, Fixmo Tools seems to strive on the idea of prevention over apprehension. In other words, easily monitor important concerns such as; memory, battery life and email issues. It’s a great way to quickly draw attention to critical information when you might have forgotten something. Let’s see Fixmo Tools in action.

Fixmo Tools Updated To Version 0.3.10 Beta

Fixmo Tools Updated To Version 0.3.10 Beta

A new version of Fixmo Tools has been released for those looking to help out with the beta application testing. If you missed it back in December when we first announced it, now is a good time to get in on the action as Fixmo Tools has corrected a lot of issues seen in previous releases thanks to the feedback users have given. If you are looking for a run down of how Fixmo can help you out, you can click here and get a look at what's available for options. Remember folks, if you download Fixmo and come across some issues, be sure to send feedback so that it can be corrected in the next release.

Fixmo Tools

Ok CrackBerry readers, it's time for some beta testing! Fixmo is a new entrant in the smartphone mobile app space and they want your feedback on the beta of their new Fixmo Tools offering. Started up by Rick Segal, formerly with the BlackBerry Partners Fund, Fixmo is looking to shake things up in the world of mobile utilities. If you think of what Norton Utilities was to computers back in the day, that's the sort of position Fixmo is taking within mobile - rounding up useful individual tools that increase device functionality and packaging them into one application that remains current as time goes on and the need for new / different utilities emerge.

I got an early look at Fixmo Tools the other day and now Fixmo has set up a download site so CrackBerry readers who want to give an early (and free!) look at the beta can do so. Be sure to keep reading below for a message to beta testers from Fixmo. And once you've given it a try, be sure to send them in your feedback.
