Facebook

Facebook for BlackBerry has received another Beta Zone update today. Nothing fancy in this version but it does include some minor fixes. We haven't seen many new features come to Facebook in the last few versions, but hopefully we'll get some good stuff at the official release. Fixes in this update include:

  • When Facebook is installed on a device running a language that is not officially supported by Facebook for BlackBerry, but is supported by BB, the app is supposed to default to English.
  • Facebook application uses HTTP links in browser
  • The Facebook server has returned an unknown error and is not able to fulfill your request. (1500)
  • WiLAN event is not being processed correctly when radio is low or changed
  • Unable to close Facebook using back key on 6.0

 Twitter for BlackBerry

I'll admit it - I'm fairly addicted to social apps on my BlackBerry. I find myself constantly checking my Twitter feed, scoping out Facebook and catching updates from Google+. I'm still not sure just what the draw is, but I know that I go nuts when I check my social happenings. I know there are plenty of you that fall into the same trap as me -- always checking out the latest on various social networks -- while others can't be bothered (or don't have the time) for social foolishness. So what we want to know is just how many of you do use social networks and how many don't bother. Let us know in the poll above (pick the option that best fits you) then drop a comment below.

Facebook for BlackBerry v 3.0.0.9 update

We all look forward to our favorite apps getting an update. While we recently saw an update to Facebook for BlackBerry, we're seeing that there is another update (now taking it to v3.0.0.9) and it is available to download from the BlackBerry Beta Zone. The update comes with a handful of bug fixes:

  • BBM Profile Update doesn't include tagged friends from Check In
  • Navigation Grid Does Not Open
  • If user initially canceled BBM connection then changed the option to Connect from BBM, Facebook connecting to BBM process did not appear automatically after reopen Facebook
  • Replies to Events or Friend requests through the device's today view is not working
  • "What's on your mind?" is cutoff with large font on publisher
  • Status Publisher - Friends picker screen is unusable in landscape mode
  • Skip button in BBM upgrade dialog needs to be translated
  • Posts being loaded twice
  • "Connecting to BBM" dialog appears every time the user opens the newsfeed or reopen Facebook on BIS SN device
  • BBM connected Profile Issue: The text in the dialog that opens when clicking on the application link in the personal message should not say the app is not installed or that the app is not available in AppWorld

If you have been encountering any of these issues then get the update now. If you are not yet a member of BlackBerry Beta Zone, why not sign up today? It's free and you can get access to downloads not yet available in App World.

When we took our first official tour of the native messaging on BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2 a month ago at CES 2012, one of the services that was missing from the social messaging integration was Facebook. We *knew* Facebook would soon be joining Twitter and LinkedIn, but it's good to see Facebook is now there too for when the highly-anticipated PlayBook software update drops later this month. You can hit up the video above to get a quick look of the Facebook addition within the Manage Accounts option screen and integrated into the native messaging client itself.

When he gave his first keynote presentation yesterday, RIM's new CEO Thorsten Heins spoke of the BlackBerry "Flow" experience, which allows you to move fluidly from one experience into another vs. the open/close paradigm that you're seeing (aka like iOS). RIM's implementation of native messaging, calendar and contacts on PlayBooks OS 2 (and therefore BlackBerry 10 of course) is a prime example of this flow-like experience. The more I use it, the more I'm loving it.

Oh yeah.. random thought... "Flow"... sounds like it could be a good product name for a future BlackBerry 10 phone model.

BBM Connected

We've known for quite some time now that Facebook and Twitter for BlackBerry have new versions that have been in testing, but for whatever reason, RIM has delayed their release more then once. The new versions for both, will have some UI changes for overall ease of use but more importantly they will also become BBM connected.

The BBM integration is something a lot of folks have been asking for and RIM is prepared to deliver that as shown above, only problem is we don't know when as of yet. But, if BBM Connected apps are you're thing then you can take solace in the fact you no longer have to ask RIM to integrate it as they're already working on it. Thanks, @omercancelikler!

Facebook Messenger BlackBerry

A few months back, Facebook Messenger hit prime time for BlackBerry, iOS and Android devices. Unlike the Facebook app itself, Facebook Messenger is a trimmed down version that simply allows you to send and receive Facebook messages no matter where you are. This ties in to having one spot to get your messages -- be it on the go or at your PC, since you can tweak Facebook to your liking fairly easily. I've had constant trouble receiving Facebook messages on my BlackBerry through the Facebook app, so using Facebook Messenger is a great alternative. It does go above and beyond as it gives you a central place to receive messages regardless of what platform you may be using, and it also syncs up nicely when you're in front of your PC so you don't have to worry about double notifications. Keep reading for more on using Facebook Messenger for BlackBerry.
