Dingleberry updated to v3.3.2

Dingleberry

The Dingleberry jailbreak tool for the BlackBerry PlayBook has received another update and now sits at v3.3.2. The new update brings some minor tweaks and fixes along with a new script. Each version of the tool seems to get better and better as we go along, so hopefully they'll keep coming. Updates to v3.3.2 include:

  • Fixed an issue with IP addresses
  • Scripts are now monitored better (termination and echo output).
  • Fixed a timing bug that affected some users (from DB 3.0 to 3.3.1) with bad USB latency. Thanks ledhed33.
  • New Script: Toggle USB Host Mode

If you haven't yet tried to jailbreak your PlayBook using Dingleberry but are interested, you can check out our full guide here to get you up and running -- just don't hold us responsible if you break anything along the way :-)

HuluBerry from the DingleBerry 3.x crew

After rooting your BlackBerry PlayBook, you'll find that DingleBerry 3.x installs a very nice little application to your PlayBook. It's called HuluBerry and allows you to watch Hulu videos from a specially-designed browser on your PlayBook. If you live outside of the US, I'm afraid your Hulu dreams are dashed for the time being. Unless you can find a US proxy that plays nice with Hulu, that is. It should be noted that HuluBerry and DingleBerry 3.1 are not compatible with the latest PlayBook beta OS 2.0.0.7111. You'll need to be running 2.0.0.6149 or earlier for HuluBerry and the root to work properly.

HuluBerry is a most excellent application; but after restarting your PlayBook, you may notice that it no longer plays videos. Interestingly, it's not just the special DingleBerry-installed browser that no longer works, root access disappears as well. You notice it with HuluBerry because breaking the Hulu watching app is the most visible consequence of this. Every time your PlayBook reboots, it looses root access. Thankfully, the DingleBerry team anticipated this.

To get HuluBerry working again, you'll just need to connect your PlayBook to a computer with the PlayBook in Development Mode. A custom script - startup.sh - runs whenever the PlayBook is connected to a computer and Development Mode is on. As soon as the device connects to the computer (I usually wait until I've entered the tablet's password), you can disconnect it. The process regains root access to your PlayBook and returns all that Hulu goodness to the PlayBook's 7" screen.

BlackBerry PlayBook running Android apps

After struggling with previous versions of the Dingleberry jailbreak, I'm happy to say that version 3 works like a freakin' charm. It bundles a downgrader, so you can get your PlayBook into a prime jailbreaking state, and Dingleberry handles all of the backing up and restoring on its own. So, what can you do with root access on a BlackBerry PlayBook? Well, there's some neat stuff going on with USB host capabilities, but the most obvious application right now is direct access to the Android Market. Sure, you can sideload the apps if you acquire them through less-than-savory means, but Android Market access means you can easily download anything you've already paid - provided it works.

There's a teeny, tiny caveat, though. PlayBook 2.0 is still very much beta, and seeing as RIM isn't even intending on providing access to the Android Market, opting instead to get developers to repackage their creations for App World. Notifications actually work well in the few apps that manage to load, but for the most part, anytyhing downloaded through Google's mobile software portal perform inconsistently at best. Generally, anything you get will simply force close as soon as you open it, but there are a few gems tucked away that perform admirably. That said, here are the best Android Market apps I've been able to run on a jailbroken BlackBerry PlayBook.

DingleBerry updated to v3.1.0

DingleBerry 3.1 allows you to choose your OS

Well, that didn't take long! The good people of the DingleBerry team have just released version 3.1 of the DingleBerry rooting tool. Just a few days ago, DingleBerry 3.0.x was released, bringing one-click root and the HuluBerry app for the PlayBook. Rooting your BlackBerry PlayBook allows the device to do things it wasn't designed to do, like downloading applications from the Android Market.

The latest 3.1 version of DingleBerry brings the ability to load any BlackBerry PlayBook OS onto your device as well as some small bug fixes. DingleBerry 3.0.x loaded only the core OS on to the device, sometimes causing problems with the tablet. D3.1 has the rare ability to load only the core OS or the entire OS which includes things like the browser, the Android operating system, and other BlackBerry applications. Also included is the ability to create a Custom OS. Our readers in the Hybrids forum might want to have a look.

Research In Motion recently released its beta version 2.0.0.7111 for the BlackBerry PlayBook, patching the root access gained by DingleBerry. D3.1 doesn't address that update, and .7111 remains locked. Still, you can be sure the team is hard at work on their next version. Until then, you can always downgrade an earlier PlayBook operating system. You do have to make a decision: are the improvements in .7111 more or less important that HuluBerry and rooting?

HuluBerry from the DingleBerry 3.x crew

We've known even before the BlackBerry PlayBook first went on sale that it could support watching Hulu videos. Hulu was started as a joint venture between NBC Universal and News Corp (Fox) that allows US internet users to watch TV shows online. It's a great way to legally watch TV over the internet. The PlayBook's flash-running browser has no problem playing the videos; it's Hulu itself that blocks content to the tablet. Within 48 hours of the tablet's release, Hulu blocked PlayBook users from viewing that content.

DingleBerry 3.x changes that; Hulu is back on the PlayBook! Included with the latest release of the rooting tool is a new browser called HuluBerry. After following the extremely easy instructions for rooting the tablet, you'll find the HuluBerry application already installed on your device. This custom browser only browses the Hulu website. And Hulu looks great on the PlayBook.

Please note: As of late Wednesday night, it appears that the the 2.0.0.7111 developer's build of the PlayBook OS breaks HuluBerry functionality. To keep watching Hulu videos on your PlayBook, I would recommend staying on version 2.0.0.4869 or 2.0.0.6149

DingleBerry 3.x makes it easier than ever to root your BlackBerry PlayBook

If you've ever wondered if it was worth your time and effort to root/jailbreak your BlackBerry PlayBook, wonder no longer. The latest DingleBerry rooting tool, DingleBerry 3.x, makes rooting your PlayBook a simple matter of activating Developer Mode on your PlayBook and following the instructions in the DingleBerry program.

With the release of DingleBerry 3.x, Mac and Linux machines get some love too. It should be noted that these Linux and Mac users will need to have certain libraries already installed on their computers first. Since I'm a PC, you find a helpful tutorial and links to the necessary libraries at the DingleBerry.it website.

We've written about rooting your PlayBook using DingleBerry before. That process involved pushing some files to your PlayBook, backing up data from and then restoring data to your PlayBook, and finally you might have to pray to the gods of Technology that you unplugged your USB cable fast enough to complete the root.

DingleBerry 3.x is light-years ahead of that process. Downgrading, rooting, and confirming whether or not the root was successful are all accomplished within the rooting tool itself; BlackBerry Desktop Software is not required. The process is straightforward and easy to do; still, there are a couple of things that can ruin your day. Keep reading past the break to find our helpful guide on using this amazing tool to gain root access to your BlackBerry PlayBook.

Connect USB Drive to your PlayBook

A few weeks back we saw a video sporting USB support on a rooted BlackBerry PlayBook. Well now guillem has posted a little how-to that shows off just how to get USB support up and running on your rooted BlackBerry PlayBook. You'll need a few supplies including a rooted PlayBook, a USB OTG (On-The-Go) adapter (or a Female USB A to micro USB cable and a soldering iron) and a bit of tech knowledge to get going. DingleBerry now an option again

With the release of OS 2.0.0.6149 (Beta), Research In Motion successfully plugged the security hole that DingleBerry 2.11 used to gain root access to the BlackBerry PlayBook. What's more, Research In Motion also broke the Android Market by disabling Accounts & sync in the version of the Android operating system that runs-- on top of the PlayBook's OS. Even if you managed to jailbreak .6149, the Android Market - the most visible benefit of rooting - wouldn't work.

The issue boils down to the fact that OS 2.0.0.4869 (beta) is no longer available for downloading. If you somehow had access to this version of the operating system, you'd be able to both root your PlayBook and access the Android Market. Now, the folks over at OpenSourceBB have come up with a rather clever way making that version of the OS available again. They've even put up a top-notch guide to accomplishing this feat.

Rooted PlayBook

Have you rooted your BlackBerry PlayBook with DingleBerry and then sat back and wondered why exactly you did it, and what benefit it could have? While many developers are behind the scenes cracking away and what kind of things can be done it appears as though others are looking for quicker changes, like changing up the icons and working towards the fonts and more. CrackBerry forums member Sith_Apprentice has found that the root access allows the icons on the PlayBook to be changed, but unfortunately there is no step by step instructions on how for the rest of us.

While there may be no official tool for developers to build themes in the works for the PlayBook this just goes to show that the root access that DingleBerry brings us will be able to be put to good use for the average consumer, and that fun things can come from this. Be sure to keep an eye in the forums for updates, and let's hope that fonts and more can be changed soon as well!

Here's how to root/jailbreak your BlackBerry PlayBook with DingleBerry!

BlackBerry PlayBook running the Android Market

[Update 31 December 2011]: OS 2.0.0.4869 (Beta) is no longer available for download, however there is a method for installing this OS to your PlayBook using a local copy of the OS.  Check out OpenSourceBB for the full details.

Greetings to you, intrepid warrior of the digital age! I don't use that word "warrior" lightly. Rooting your BlackBerry PlayBook is a difficult process; even a single mistake along the way can force you to restart the entire process from the beginning. I know; I've been there. I've gone through the process only to be confronted with the dreaded "Jailbreak Failed" message (several times). I've bricked my PlayBook - double red flash and all. I've had my PlayBook rendered useless for 24 hours while I waited for my OS 2.0 upgrade to expire. Using DingleBerry to root your PlayBook is not a simple process.

It is not impossible, though. I know; I'm here, with a rooted, Android Market-having PlayBook. When that simple "#" appeared on my screen - letting me know the root was successful - I literally jumped up and did a short happy dance.

This guide is the result of those hours of trial and error I went through to get my PlayBook rooted. It is filled with all the details that I wish had been available to me when I rooted my BlackBerry tablet. With a careful reading and attention to detail, you'll get there too. At the moment, DingleBerry is only available for use on Windows PC's. Mac support is said to be coming soon.

Before we continue, I would like to thank Shao for his assistance in nailing down specifics of the DingleBerry process. Also of immense help, tayshun12's spectacular guide in the CrackBerry.com Forums. Now, on to the rooting.

The DingleBerry tool for the BlackBerry PlayBook opens up all kinds of new possibilities for hardcore users everywhere. While there isn't too much you can do just yet, many PlayBook owners have had plenty of sleepless nights pushing the tablet to its limits and finding new things to do. One of which comes from eltecnoblog and shows off a rooted PlayBook with a USB support (much like what was shown off by the guys at TAT). As seen in the video above, the PlayBook is able to read a USB flash drive and play movies from it thanks to some hard work and a bit of hardware. It's definitely a great start and a good sign of what can be done on a rooted PlayBook. Check out the full video above, then drop a comment with your thoughts!

DingleBerry

Well that didn't take long. Only a few short hours after RIM released the latest BlackBerry PlayBook OS to help fight off the DingleBerry exploit, the BlackBerry PlayBook has once again been rooted making use of another exploit known by Chris Wade. RIM did in fact patch the previous security matter as suggested in their security article on the matter but where this makes use of a different exploit within the QNX system, it's not as-of-yet known how this one functions.

DingleBerry Exploit

With DingleBerry now available to gain root access to the BlackBerry PlayBook, we're quickly learning more about how the exploit works. We have a more in-depth post coming up soon, but a big part of that answer was just tweeted out by DingleBerry creator Chris Wade. See the tweet above for explanation.

What's really surprising, funny, interesting, sad and disturbing here is that CRACKBERRY.com actually warned Research In Motion about this exploit back in April, 2011, shortly after the BlackBerry PlayBook was released:

Dingleberry

We've been hearing plenty about the DingleBerry rooting / jailbreaking tool for the BlackBerry PlayBook, especially on the last CrackBerry Podcast where we had Chris Wade join us to tell us all a little about it and how it came about but now -- you can finally get your hands on the beta of it for yourself.

As it stands, rooting / jailbreaking your BlackBerry PlayBook alone isn't going to bring much immediate change to your PlayBook. But as more people start looking at the code to see what exactly the PlayBook internals are comprised of it, the possibilities for having the PlayBook do things it was never intended to do are no longer confined to the limited access offered by RIM out of the box.

Much like how Android devices and iPhones when rooted / jailbroken can allow full control over their respective operating systems, rooting / jailbreaking the BlackBerry PlayBook opens up those possibilities as well to a certain extent. If you're not comfortable with the rooting of your PlayBook then it is suggested that you leave well enough alone. Though, you may wish to revisit the idea once more reasons for doing so exist.

Things have been left out of this beta release-- things such as the enabling of Hulu and Netflix playback. But all that said, once more developers get this in their hands, more reasons to do it will come about -- that is if RIM doesn't swiftly patch it before things get interesting. Needless to say, it's expected RIM will have their QNX team on this ASAP.
