Skype Mobile for BlackBerry A to Z

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

Skype Mobile for Verizon released yesterday, and while not the greatest client for BlackBerry, it does get the job done. You can view all of your Skype contacts, as well and IM and make calls through your device. Depending on who or where you are calling, the charges vary, but Verizon has created a decent FAQ page that pretty much explains how it all breaks down. You can also check out some how-to videos on the page that will help with setting up and getting around the app. Check out the video above for a quick look at what Skype Mobile has to offer.

DUB

It may be an exaggeration, but sometimes it feels like my wallet won’t stay folded. It’s not only because of membership, credit and debit cards; it’s all of the business cards I seem to accumulate. I’m not sure how they all get there. Maybe it’s a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing. In this case, the hand is nabbing every card in sight. I also know that I’ve lost access to some extremely important contacts, all because of a misplaced card. Besides your wallet, your corkboard or cubicle wall could contain enough business cards to make it look like a shingled roof. A cleaner, greener approach is to use your address book (duh!), but this can be time consuming. For some, vCards could also be an issue. “Here’s your card?” Here’s MY card, compliments of DUB.

By using DUB, you can easily send and receive detailed contact information right from your BlackBerry smartphone. Your risk of outdated contact information is greatly reduced thanks to DUB’s ability to automatically maintain an up to date contact list. So, leave your George Constanza sized wallet at the door and check out DUB.

Forums moderator yester18 took the time to do up this review of BBScanner for us. He goes over the multiple features, feeds, settings and more. If you don't want to shell out over $100 for a full-featured police scanner, this is a great app that lets you listen to a ton of police, fire & EMS radios. BBScanner is available for just $2.99 from BBScanner.com.

Sensobi

Have you ever actually sat down and looked at your Address Book on your BlackBerry smartphone? I mean “really” sort through it. I bet that there are a good number of contacts that you don’t even need. When was the last time that you talked to so – and – so? You may have some of those contacts; the type that you quickly throw into your address book. They are saved, but forgotten for many reasons; it may be because you think you may need to reach them at some point in time, or you make brief contact and want to talk at a more convenient time. Whatever the reason is, these lost souls occupy your address book and continue to grow. At this point you either keep them or delete them. I try to keep my address book trimmed down, but I always find a stray contact or two that have snuck in.

A while ago, Bla1ze turned my attention to an impressive Address Book alternative that helps you to see who you have talked to, what you’ve said, how often you want to talk and more. This application is called Sensobi Contacts. Rather than trying to remember when you’ve talked to this person last, let Sensobi Contacts fill you in. Lets see Sensobi Contacts in action!

txtForward

This may not be the case for everybody but for me, I used to rarely use SMS to communicate. There has only been a slight increase of SMS activity on my BlackBerry smartphone. What’s the reason? There isn’t actually any real reason that I can think of. Most of my wireless communication typically happens via email, phone calls, BlackBerry Messenger or through third party apps. After thinking about it, I may not use SMS that often due to the fact that once it’s deleted, it’s gone. Unless I choose to delete an email from my mailbox and handheld, I will still have the message backed up somewhere. If I’m at work, I’m usually managing my email and such from my desktop. Some departments in my company are actually banning cellphones, due to SMS abuse. Tsk tsk fellow employees - even without your BlackBerry on your desks, you can still use txtForward.

Actually, txtForward, if used with good intentions, could be very beneficial. The application lets you forward received and/or sent messages to an email address of your choice. With txtForward on my BlackBerry, I should text those who may have thought I died a long time ago. If you’re still curious what this application could do for you, read on.

PhoneLog for BlackBerry

Having a look at my monthly wireless phone bill, I see that I don't really use much of my voice plan. I mostly use my BlackBerry smartphone for email, pin and SMS messages, but my voice plan is a fantastic deal that I don't want to give up. Perhaps, in the back of my head, I have a tiny voice telling me to watch my usage. I then tell it that we don't have anything to worry about, so relax. Then a co-worker walks by, and I overhear something about having me committed for talking to myself. Before they think any further about taking me away, I should find a way to reassure that little voice by keeping track of my usage.

To answer the call, PhoneLog was released a short while back. This little application offers the power to keep record of your completed calls, missed calls and your SMS history. With these records you are now free to clear your call history, clear your messages and stop waiting for your wireless bill to check your usage. Uh-oh, some men in white coats are coming, let have a quick look before it's too late.

WhitePages Mobile for BlackBerry Smartphones

Being a BlackBerry user and abuser, I can admit that I find myself spending nearly zero time using a Phone Book. You know, those rather large books filled with names, numbers and (if you're really lucky) listings and menus of restaurants. Now, when I say "zero time", I mean when my BlackBerry device is charging or if someone else is at the computer, so pretty much almost never. I'm sure I'm not alone when I think that they're becoming nearly obsolete, especially when everything you ever wanted to know about anything is so readily available. Isn't it much easier to keep a BlackBerry device in your pocket rather than a phonebook?

Adding to the ever evolving accessibility to information is WhitePages Mobile for your BlackBerry Smartphone. Last month, Kevin let us know that this application, which had seen previous success with its Android and iPhone versions, had been unleashed upon the BlackBerry App World. Some of you may have even made use of m.WhitePages.com in your searches. From WhitePages Mobile, you can perform reverse lookups, contact management and Company searches. If you've got a few phone books lying around, stack them up, use them as a foot stool, and read on.

Privus Logo

Wireless essentials, add-ons, features or Wireless Bill Bloaters; for most, these services are nearly as crucial as having a voice and data plan. Most of these features are only available through your carrier and, in order to save money, may be bundled with other features. Within these bundles, may be services that you may not want, or even find quite annoying... *Cough* Rogers *Cough* Who Called

Of course that's just my personal opinion, that or a bad cold coming on. Besides functionality, you have to look at cost as well. Although it would be fantastic to have all the bells and whistles that you would want, you may not be able to afford it. The light at the end of the economical tunnel is still a far distance away and every penny counts. For this review, I experienced a couple of firsts; my first software review from the BlackBerry App World and (from what I remember) the first time I looked at a third party service capable of replacing am essential carrier service. Let's have a look at Privus Mobile Caller ID.

E-Mobile Preview for BlackBerry

E-Mobile Preview

Alright folks, just when you thought they've stopped popping up on CB, I'm back with one more. Yes, one more notification application before the final showdown. To be honest, I've enjoyed testing out this and similar applications, as I've found this type of solution to be one of the most useful, in my opinion. The fellow BlackBerry Users and Abusers I've spoken with seem to agree with me and it's only fair to present these apps and see which one comes out on top.

Without further adieu, let me present the fourth and final contender in the battle for the title of Pop-up Powerhouse; e-Mobile Preview.

With e-mobile Preview, you are given a glance at not only what you could be missing, (email and SMS messages) but what you actually have missed (missed calls that is). E-Mobile Software already has an impressive array of applications in its utility belt, so let's see how e-Mobile Preview handles its turn at bat. Get it? Utility belt? Bat?.....ok..moving on....

Message Peek for BlackBerry Review

Message Peek for BlackBerry

So for a while now, I've been using PeeKaWho to alert me of messages. In a nutshell, the application notifies you of incoming Email and SMS via Popups, no matter what you are doing on your BlackBerry. This allows you to see the sender, subject and a brief email body. This past October, I had a look at both PeeKaWho and Aerize Email Alerts and decided upon PeeKaWho as my pop up pal. Back then, these two seemed to be your only choices. As time has passed, more companies have jumped on this unique bandwagon. Seeing how there's typically nothing wrong with a little healthy competition, I thought I would introduce some of you to one of the other players in the pop up playing field.

Introducing, from Wise Mobile Solutions, Message Peek... "The best Email/SMS preview software for BlackBerry."

...looks like I'll have another comparison on my hands soon....

Antair E-Mail Auto-Responder for BlackBerry

Despite what some of us want to believe, there are times when you simply can't use your BlackBerry. Whether it be an important meeting, family function or a romantic evening, the Berry must stay holstered. You fight the urge, sighing and squirming in your seat.

"Well, I should at least let them know I'm busy," you think to yourself, "it's the polite thing to do." You sneak a peek at the email, it's nothing critically important, but you decide to respond letting them know you're busy. The next thing you know, you're busted. You should have done one of two things beforehand; Keep your BlackBerry holstered and pick up a copy of CrackBerry: True Tales of Use and Abuse, or find a way to respond without getting caught.

Let them know you're in a meeting, without picking up your BlackBerry.

Antair Email Auto-Responder for the BlackBerry will help you to stay focused on the task at hand. The application allows you to create tailored, automatic email responses for your incoming emails. Essentially, Antair turns Out of Office replies into Out of Reach of my BlackBerry replies. Read on for more.

iCall Manager Light

Call me crazy, but I remember that tag line from somewhere. Oh yes! It use to be attached to an application called Black & Whitelist by i,SoftwareLabs . I reviewed Black & Whitelist way back in the beginning of May and was quite impressed with the application.

Now, I have set my eyes upon iCall Manager Light. Essentially, it offers a similar call management solution as Black& Whitelist, but adds a few more ingredients to the stew.

This time around, iCall Manager Light let's you create custom profiles to manage your calls. Once again i,softwarelabs has given my freedom back, this time, in style.

For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, close your eyes an imagine this; You are on a date and the night is going splendidly. You gaze into each others eyes, and lean in for your first kiss. Your phone rings - you forgot to set it to vibrate. Your ring tone is embarrassing enough to break the moment. With iCall Manager Light, you could've sent the call directly to voicemail, mute the tune or hang up on the call.

I can hear the hamster wheel turning in your head. Once you finish setting up the second date, have a look at the full review

PhoneFace!

When you hear the name Electric Pocket, what's the first thing you think of? Applications like Flipside, Ringo Ringtone Manager or FindMe for Facebook right? Well, try this one on for size; PhoneFace.

PhoneFace takes attaching images to contacts one step further...well, maybe two steps. You're able to assign images found on your Berry, your Micro SD or even images from your contact's Facebook account. You can then browse through the images and find the contact you want. Navigation is similar to the smooth album cover flow that you would experience with Flipside. I was never big on Facebook, didn't even have an account until I reviewed the FindMe application. When I first learned about PhoneFace and its Facebook integration, I could almost hear Al Pacino in my head saying, "Just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in."

Do you have trouble with matching names to faces and want to train your brain? Or do you want to call up your friend and laugh at their profile pic, reminding them of that time at that place where they did that thing and you know who found out? *ahem* Sorry. If you just want to see what it's all about, join me after the jump.

PeeKaWho and Email Alerts

You're browsing the web, beating your BrickBreaker high score, or perhaps organizing your Calendar when a message comes in. Your Berry vibrates or chirps a notification, that LED blinking red, urging - nay- seducing you into checking your inbox. Sound familiar? It should. I've been a victim of this many, many times. Is the message important enough to stray from the task at hand? The time has arrived for a solution, the ability to choose which is more important. Now as long as they can behave themselves, I would like to show you not one, but two poppin' applications; PeeKaWho and Aerize Email Alerts.

Both of these applications grant your Berry the ability to alert you of an incoming message via popups. Since these two applications are somewhat similar, why not have a side by side comparison? To really get into the popup mood, open the full review in a new window folks!
