Cloud storage is all the rage. On the surface, it seems like PlayBook owners have been left out in the cold. When we look closely, however, we can see that it is easy and powerful to manage all our cloud storage needs right from the PlayBook.

Using Dropbox, Box.net, Google Drive and SkyDrive on the BlackBerry PlayBook

We know that we need more native apps for our beloved PlayBooks. We also know (even more so after BlackBerry World 2012) the BlackBerrys are for people who need to get stuff done. In today's world - no matter what business you are in - getting stuff done means having access to cloud storage.

For some platforms, there is an app for everything - including cloud storage. Our sister site (iMore) ran a great article on all the available apps for cloud storage on iOS, and it is worth a read.  For us PlayBook owners, we need to get a bit more creative. The good news, however, is that we can access all major cloud storage services on our PlayBook as easily and as effectively as any other platform...we just need to work a bit harder at it!

It’s been a while since we spoke about Soonr. Soonr provides safe and secure access to documents, media files, projects and recorded actions for you and your teammates to works on. It’s real-time access and backup whenever you need it. All of this is captured in what they call the Dashboard. Any activity, including addition and modification of files, progress within projects and more is recorded here. Rather than calling up a member of the team to see what they have done, the answers are right at your thumb-tips. Soonr offers Premium and Pro accounts that include a Versioning service, which helps you retrieve previous versions of compromised files – which is a lot better that starting back at square one. Soonr continues to use an extremely intuitive web-based application that enables it to maintain a footprint of only 4kb on your BlackBerry. The launcher is called Soonr Workplace Classic.

Features:

  • Access all your PC or Mac files
  • View documents and pictures fast with optimization for 57 file types
  • Collaborate with online Projects
  • Instant notifications of changes with SMS support
  • Instantly search across computers and projects
  • Secure computer files with set it and forget it backup
  • Print to any shared printer in your team

Earlier this month, Soonr announced that they now support touch screen BlackBerry smartphones, which makes it even easier to access your files. You still need to sign up for an account and install the desktop software. You can start off with a free 2 GB backup account for yourself, with the ability to add more storage (and users) with a variety of available packages. The Soonr Workplace Classic launcher itself is free from BlackBerry App World

Dropbox for BlackBerry updated to v1.0.30

Dropbox For BlackBerry

For those of you all who happened to get in on the Dropbox for BlackBerry beta, you can now log in and download the latest release available which, should be showing as v1.0.30. At this time, I couldn't find any change log to report about what exactly has been updated but, I can say just from using it that it does appear to work better on the BlackBerry Torch now. If you still haven't gotten into the beta release, then you may want to keep your eye on Dropbox site as they often make unannounced slots available.

Dropbox

Well, we've seen it arrive on practically every other platform before BlackBerry but, either way it is here now. Dropbox, the online storage solution which offers users 2GB of space for free has just gone live with their beta application for BlackBerry. You'll have to act fast though, the forums posting says 500 users and no one knows how many have already taken that count down. Check it out and report back in the comments. My report, it's fast and works great. As a Dropbox user, certainly glad to see it arrive. PS: You'll need to login to your dropbox account.
