Dear Berry

Hello again dear readers. It's time to once again open up the mailbag and clear up any BlackBerry woes you may have. This week's question comes from Steve and he writes:

I have a bold 9900 with Bluetooth which works great but I have a question...how do I use my Bluetooth to listen to media from my blackberry?.

Thanks S

After a few emails, Steve needed to know if his current Bluetooth headset was compatible but didn't know which model he had. All he knew was that he owned a Plantronics Voyager with dual pairing. Not all Bluetooth headsets possess the ability to stream media and some manufacturers have actually re-released the same model with the feature which is even more confusing.

Car and Driver Max 4x Bluetooth Headset

I drive quite often, taking wee ones to school or to their activity locations etc and at the same time I have to keep in touch with the home base to make sure other members of the family are keeping with their daily routine too. That means I’ll have to be on the phone at certain times while I’m on the road, so it requires me to own a bluetooth headset. Bluetooth headsets have not always agreed with me, mainly because they never sit in my ear properly and fall out a lot, even with trying them out with the different sized plugs that come in the packaging. Also, the fact that I wear glasses means it doesn’t play nice with the piece that goes around the ear. I came across the Car and Driver Max 4x Bluetooth Headset and thought I’d take them for a drive. Keep reading to see how they faired.

HS700

Besides the vast line of BlackBerry smartphones, and the PlayBook, RIM makes some powerful accessories, as well. Of course we always hear about protective cases, rapid chargers and such, but there’s one type of accessory we don’t always hear about- RIM has a great line of Bluetooth headsets. We’ve looked at a few of them over the years; the economic HS-300, the powerful HS-500, but of course we want to move up the scale and see how much they can pack into a headset. For this very reason, we’re looking at the BlackBerry HS-700 Bluetooth headset. This Bluetooth headset not only lets you talk to your friends, family and colleagues, but you can also interact with it as well. The voice commands/interactions are unlike anything that earlier Bluetooth headsets from RIM could provide. It does all this while looking oh so sexy.

BlueAnt Q2

I have been a long time user of the Bluetooth headsets from BlueAnt. I’ve become spoiled by the voice commands that they offer. They first had me when I did my initial review of the BlueAnt V1 Bluetooth headset. It had been my longest run with a Bluetooth headset before I started using Bluetooth speakerphones. After deciding not to limit my Bluetooth calls to the car any longer, I immediately realized that the speaker phone was not the best solution, especially at work. Now I could have fallen back to my faithful BlueAnt V1, but human nature kicked in and wanted to see what was new and potentially better. What I found was the BlueAnt Q2 “smart” Bluetooth Headset. While much bigger in size in comparison to the V1, the number of improvements it had were equally as large.

Dear Berry

Welcome back CrackBerry Nation to another edition of Dear Berry! It's time to crack (excuse the pun) open the mailbag and answer another question by one of our readers. This week's submission was sent in courtesy of Karla who writes:

Hi, I have a the Bold 9780 and wanted to know what you would recommend for a headset that can notify you of incoming calls ID, emails and text and gps plus other apps. Thanks in advance.

-Karla

Dear Karla,
This is a really great question Karla and one that posed quite a challenge to answer so I thank you for sending it in. When selecting a headset, I normally judge each one by these three factors: quality, comfort, and features. If a BT headset is uncomfortable or sounds like I'm in a tunnel it doesn't get my seal of approval. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, my recommendation for you is ... and in my best impersonation of Ryan Seacrest ....you'll find out after the break!

Holiday Gift Guide 2011

Ah, the holidays, that joyous time of year where we strive to find the perfect gift for everyone on our list. Sometimes, we moms get forgotten in the hectic shopping rush and end up with last minute gifts like a toaster or a waffle iron. When buying for dear old mom, we forget that she is
more than a housekeeper, taxi service, day care provider, accountant, nurse and counselor. As an extremely busy mother of 3, I rely HEAVILY on my BlackBerry devices on a daily basis for just about everything (seriously, a day without one of my BlackBerry Smartphones is like a day in purgatory for me). I figure there are plenty of other BlackBerry moms like me out there that would absolutely love some cool apps or accessories for their devices this Christmas. Keep reading after the break for some great gift ideas for that wonderful mom in your life.

BlackBerry Bluetooth headphones

Often times when looking for new accessories for your favorite BlackBerry devices most of the time is spent looking for a case, a dock or a new battery -- but one thing that is usually forgotten about is a nice set of Bluetooth headphones for while on the go. Many of us love musi and love our BlackBerry, and with Pandora, TuneIn Radio, or any of the other great options that are available, we are not always in ideal places to be able to listen to the music through the speaker of the device. Whether in the airport, on a bus, train or sitting in the office with a few minutes of down time, you most likely don't want to blast your music for others to hear, so why not carry around a set of Bluetooth headphones with you while on the go?

Most of us are used to the constant tangles and all the time spent trying to figure out the nasty knots that are created by carrying around conventional headphones, but those days are gone, as you can simply pick up a set of Bluetooth headphones, and be wireless while on the go. With up to six hours of play / talk time, and four days of standby time these are perfect to charge and throw in your bag to carry around with you for those random times you may need it. In addition to being able to listen to music with them, if you get a phone call the music player will pause, and you will be able to field your phone call right from the same headset, which is great because you don't have to take them off and put them on each and every time. If music is a part of your life, and you enjoy listening on the go and want to remove all the wires from your life, Bluetooth headphones are a must have for you.

Blueant Q1

While at CES, I had the opportunity to meet the great folks over at BlueAnt and have a chat with them about their Q1 headset. This sexy little piece of hardware had me smitten from the get-go, and I fell completely in love with it during the course of testing it out for this review. It seems like many people are tossing Bluetooth headsets to the curb lately, but the little guy is sure to stick by my side for a while. I haven't used a headset quite like the Q1 before, so lets get going and see how it holds up.

MogoTalk has been available for the iPhone for a little while now and last night at ShowStoppers at CES 2010 they were showing off some pre-release versions of their MogoTalk accessory coming to BlackBerry Smartphones. MogoTalk offers a pretty elegant solution to an annoying problem - carrying around a bluetooth headset and ensuring it's actually charged. MogoTalk offers a case that surrounds your BlackBerry, offering protection, and on the back actually houses a bluetooth headset. On MogoTalk for BlackBerry, the cases feature a charging port that allow you to charge both your device and your headset at the same time. So with MogoTalk, you'll always have your bluetooth headset with you and always have it charged and ready to be put to use. Not a bad concept at all.

You can follow mogotalk.com for more information. Right now they're looking at a Q2 release. We'll be sure to review it as they hit the market to see how well it performs in everyday life. Definitely a unique and useful concept for those who use a bluetooth headset regularly.

Aliph's Jawbone Bluetooth Headset

Aliph's Jawbone

This surfaced in the CrackBerry forums late last week, but if you haven't it seen it yet, what you are now looking at is Aliph's new "Jawbone" bluetooth headset. It is VERY cool (unless of course you're a hater of bluetooth headsets in general - then they'll always look strange to you and you'll nevre see the beauty!
).

Lots of pictures and a review of the Jawbone can be found at the-gadgeteer.com.

I've been working on a review of Motorola's H700 headset, which I bought a month ago. The H700 is a slick, smooth operating device, but seeing this almost makes me want to trade up!
