We first took a look at Sand Slides by Logik State last December. While watching the video, the game itself looked pretty easy but trust me, it's not. Check out the link to Alicia's review for the full details and features but the basic gist of the game is to get the colored grains of sand to fall into the appropriate color-coded silo crates at the bottom. You can do this by drawing lines on the playing field to guide them to the correct silo crate. The catch and difficulty level come into play with only being able to draw a limited number of lines and each silo is time sensitive. If you accidentally get the wrong color grains into an incorrect silo crate, the grains counter at the top will decrease. The game is over when the counter hits zero.

There isn’t a way to pause the game right now so be prepared to completely ignore the rest of the world when you’re on a roll. In fact, the only addition I could see to make this game even better would be a way to pause the game (possibly a swipe down from the top bezel can be implemented). Sand Slides has been a popular game on the iOS platform and now I can see why. This is a great addition to my BlackBerry PlayBook game collection.

Right now Sand Slides can be downloaded from App World for FREE (regular price is $1.99) so if you've been waiting to give it a try, now's the time to jump on it. Since the game’s release date back in November of last year, it’s received nothing but 4 or 5 stars from those who have played it. If you’ve already tried the game, leave a few tips or comments for our readers in the comment section below!

While you maybe working away or enjoying the sun this week, many of you may be looking for a new game to shed away some of that extra time this weekend. One of my more recent finds is Chromasphere for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Chromasphere is a game that utilizes the PlayBook’s accelerometer and gyroscope to have you navigate a glowing ball through a labyrinth of hills and turns. By Redmotion Games, the developer of Chromasphere has said that this game is technically in a beta stage and will be receiving frequent updates to the games levels and features.

Features

  • Roll a Chromasphere using tilt controls and full 3d physics engine!
  • Get to the end of each 3d level within the bronze, silver and gold times to win medals!
  • Pit yourself against your last best time with the "ghost" replay mode: an easy way to improve your skills!
  • Complete 18 3d Levels with many more to come!
  • Collect 4 colored shards to activate the Chromasphere colors and open colored doors, activate colored switches and cross colored bridges!
  • Moving and rotating platforms! Plus more obstacles to come!
  • Touch-based Camera Controls: Swipe the screen left and right to move the camera. Pinch the screen in and out to zoom in and out.

Chromasphere has you navigating 13 full 3D levels, moving and rotating platforms and locked passages that will have you playing for hours. While the developer stated that this is still in beta, it feels like a polished game to me. It would be neat to have Scoreloop integration and allow the player to challenged themselves as they race against their previous time. Chromasphere for the BlackBerry PlayBook and is available in BlackBerry App World for .99 cents and is certainly worth the download.

Let's face it - there is something about shooting off a slingshot and breaking things that is just plain old fun. Let's Break Stuff for the BlackBerry PlayBook lets you do just that. Armed with only your slingshot, you'll go through various levels firing at glasses, bottles, plates and more as you try to just, well, break stuff. You'll have to hit 100% breakage on each level to progress, which isn't as easy as it seems. Overall this is a great time killer and an awesome way to vent out some daily frustrration. Let's Break Stuff is available in BlackBerry App World for $1.99. A free lite is also available.

Pirate Wings

3D flying shooter Pirate Wings has made its way to the BlackBerry PlayBook. The game has been available on iOS for quite some time, and this is a direct port of that version (as noted by the "turn your iPhone" notice I got during the tutorial). Pirate Wings puts you inside a Star Fox-like ship while you race around 3D environments collecting powerups and firing off missles and mines.

Features include:

  • Races mode with 9 race circuits, 3 different environments (Canyons, Underwater world, Outer Space), 5 characters and 12 ships available for 3 levels of difficulty. Use your lasers, missiles, mines and boost to finish first.
  • Story Mode where you'll discover the incredible adventure of Raoul, a canyon pilot who will ally with the space pirates to avoid the trap of the defiant commander Burp in 13 original missions.
  • Ghost mode to improve your lap time and compare your scores online.

I'm really digging the game thus far. The controls are a bit tough at first, but once you get the hang of it they aren't too bad. We'll have a full review coming along shortly, but if you want to check out Pirate Wings for yourself, you can grab it for $4.99 in BlackBerry App World.

Whether it’s a phone or a tablet, using these mobile devices to pass the boring parts of the day is probably the best feature (besides being connected to the ones we love of course). Today my mission was to find an application or game on the BlackBerry PlayBook that features three key attributes. These attributes where attractive UI, low cost – or free, and addicting gameplay. The first game to pass these was Minesweeper Reloaded.

Features

  • Adjustable mine count
  • Adjustable field size
  • Multiplayer coming soon
  • Sound effects coming soon

If you’re a windows PC user I’m sure you have probably stumbled across the Minesweeper game that has been pre-loaded on almost all Windows machines since ... well, the beginning of time. Minesweeper Reloaded is no different from the classic you’ve come to love.

I had a few issues with the game - one being that often the animated transitions would take long to complete causing you to hit one of the icons a second and a third time. The issue is every time you hit the one of the option buttons, it tries to complete the action again. For example, if you click the options icon and then click again because you thought you didn't, it will open and then reopen the settings page because of the slow transitions.  The other issue I found is more of a feature request and it is that the game is missing sound effects -- something that would add more excitement to the gameplay. I’ve taken the time to read in the developer’s notes on App World and he is certainly looking to add sound effects and it should be coming in a future update, so do not panic.

With mines placed strategically throughout the playing field and with almost no way of knowing where one lies, you’ll be on the edge of your seat as you test the waters with Minesweeper Reloaded on the BlackBerry PlayBook, give it a download, it’s free.

Somyeol Jump and Run BlackBerry PlayBook

Looking to get a little gaming in this week? Then look no further than Somyeol Jump and Run for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Somyeol Jump and Run is a 2D side scrolling game in which your mission is to save a group of Somyeols as Metroid’s attacks their home planet. The game features 100 levels, Scoreloop integration, various control options and more.

Features:

  • Totally FREE
  • Unique Jump&Run
  • Over 100 fun and challenging levels
  • 11 different types of Somyeols
  • Collect and find hidden trophys
  • Scoreloop online highscore, compete with friends or players all over the world
  • Different input methods

Essentially what you’re doing is controlling a group of about 10 Somyeols, and have to successfully move them from point A to point B, but that’s where the simplicity ends. The issue is that the other Somyeols don’t have a mind of their own, and just follow the leader and when you’re faced with fire, spikes, and water this makes for a slightly more complicated game. If you’re thinking “ah, that’s easy”, remember that you need to ensure that all of the drone Somyeols make their way back to the rocket ship…..alive. The more you leave behind or the more that die on the way the lower your score is and the harder it is to continue.

I was impressed to see the developer add Scoreloop into their game, really does adds to the fun factor when playing and competing against others. Somyeol Jump and Run is available on the BlackBerry PlayBook and is available in BlackBerry App World for the low-low cost of free, and you can’t beat that.

If you’ve ever wanted to become a Hollywood stunt person but hate the risks associated with flying in the air and smashing into things, then don’t worry -- you’re not alone. While we leave the stunts to the experts, we’re still able to have a little fun with a new game for the BlackBerry PlayBook called Stunt Pear. Stunt Pear takes you on an interesting voyage where you have to smash your way through boxes and obstacles to get into the barrel. The developer has used physics and ragdoll effects to make the game not only appealing, but also a little challenging.

Features

  • Smash, bounce and spin your way through 144 levels
  • Use gears, cannons, bubbles, tires, pinball bumpers, skateboards and shopping trolleys to reach the goal
  • Cool ragdoll physics
  • Collect the stars hidden throughout the world to unlock the Nightmare levels!

The developer of Stunt Pear is Chocolate Moose Games and an intriguing fact is that they first made the game for iOS, skipped Android (for now) and went right to the BlackBerry PlayBook. The move to go directly to BlackBerry unquestionably has me excited as more developers support what I feel is the best gaming and communications tool available.

I’ve been powering through the levels over the past few days and there’s something that’s missing, something that would spark the competitiveness in others and myself. That something is an online leader board with Scoreloop integration. With Scroeloop, you can see how others are doing around the world and attempt to beat their scores. Not only would this cause many to play more to beat scores it’s also known to help keep the game on tablets for a longer period of time. Other than the missing Scoreloop I’ve been addicted to Stunt Pear and recommend giving it a download. Stunt Pear is available BlackBerry App World for the BlackBerry PlayBook and is only .99 cents.

“Union is at it again with another hit title as Smash Cops crashes onto the BlackBerry PlayBook”

While there are tons and tons of extraordinary paid apps available on the BlackBerry PlayBook, there are also a boatload of incredible free apps and games as well. Run In Crowd for the BlackBerry PlayBook has been around for a few months now, but the latest additions certainly make it more rounded. Since launching Run In Crowd, the developer has added music, smoother gameplay, and integrated the Scoreloop social gaming platform.

Features

  • Multiplayer - you race alongside other players
  • Level generation - you run in a new world each day
  • Simple and addictive gameplay with simple controls
  • Cross-platform competition - you run with players from iOS/Android/BlackBerry devices

The premise of the game is actually quite straightforward, run. When you start the level you and a few other gamers are in the same position, but that quickly changes as you are forced to run as the world gets faster and faster. You will want to keep an eye out for obstacles and large voids in the games world.  The longer you run, the higher your score as well as the bigger bragging rights when you see yourself as the number one on the worldwide leader boards.

The developers have dubbed this game as a multiplayer game, and while it technically is, you aren't playing against others in real time. The multiplayer works by remembering previous races of other players from around the world and then pins you up against their old race times. A neat way of doing multiplayer gaming and also a good way to eliminate lag between internet connections. Run In Crowd is available on the BlackBerry PlayBook and is free in BlackBerry App World.

Angry Birds Space

Though just released for the BlackBerry PlayBook a little over 2 weeks ago, Angry Birds Space has already received an update. Version 1.1 adds a new level called Fry Me To the Moon which will be a welcome addition for those of us that have already played through the first 2 levels. This update also includes a couple of minor changes to the layout of the menu, namely rearranging the planets and unveiling a bit more of the teaser image marked "Coming Soon".

Rumor has it that maybe the Simpsons will somehow tie into a new Angry Birds game, and we can't help but think of Homer when we see that pink frosted donut poking out of the brown wrapper in that teaser image. What do you guys think? Coincidence, or a fairly obvious hint? Let us know in the comments below, and if you don't already have Angry Birds Space on your PlayBook, you can grab it at the link below for just $2.99. Thanks to everyone that sent this in!

Angry Birds Seasons updated to 2.3

Today Rovio has updated Angry Birds Seasons to version 2.3. The new version brings the levels up to par with the other platforms which include Cherry Blossom, Year of the Dragon, Wreck the Halls, Ham’o’ween and many others. The download should be available in BlackBerry App World, but if not remember it can take up to 24 hours to go across all the servers. If you have not downloaded this version, or any of the Angry Birds games, I suggest doing so. They’re quite addictive.

Smash Cops for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Just this afternoon we we heard that a ton of hot new games were coming to the BlackBerry PlayBook, one of which was Smash Cops from Union. There was a lot of speculation about just when we'd see these games, and lo and behold here is one of them in App World now. Smash Cops is a challenging pursuit game where you drive a police car after runaway bad guys, while avoiding pedestrians, civilian traffic, and other obstacles. Choose from any of 4 mini-games: smash a load of cars illegally parked in a car park, weave through a course laid out by cones, and dodge traffic on a highway and collect evidence throughout the city.

Smash Cops uses a different style of control than you normally find in a car/driving type game. Instead of steering by tilting your device or pressing on either side of the screen, you actually place your finger behind the car to steer. It takes a bit of getting used to but it does work well. The graphics are definitely high quality and with different attack and escape routes spread over 20 missions and 5 vehicles you're sure to play this one for some time to come. You can grab Smash Cops for $4.99 at the link below.
