 BlackBerry MVS 5

Following up on their announcement at BlackBerry World this year, RIM has announced that BlackBerry MVS is now available for Avaya Phone Systems. The release of MVS 5 is available in North America and the UK for systems using Avaya Aura 6.1, Avaya Communications Manager, Avaya CS1000 Communication Server, Cisco Unified Communications Manager and Mitel Communications Director.

BlackBerry MVS 5 brings together the desk phone and smartphone to enable employees to securely and cost effectively make and take desk phone calls practically anywhere in the world on their BlackBerry® smartphones. Calls can be made over cellular or Wi-Fi networks with automatic, prompted or manual handoff between these networks based on employee or administrator preferences.

Employees use the same phone interface on their BlackBerry smartphones that they use for cellular calls and enjoy the convenience of single number reach, extension dialing and ad hoc conferencing.

Companies benefit by having smartphone calls managed and controlled by BlackBerry MVS 5 and routed through the company's phone system for potential savings on long distance and international roaming charges, and adherence to company policies and regulatory compliance requirements.

MVS 5.0

Back at WES we posted about the revamped MVS which incorporated Wi-Fi calling, and today it is now available. For those who don't know what it is, there is a demo video showing you what MVS 5.0 is all about.

You've probably seen all this new marketing on subways, buses and TV spots pushing BlackBerry Messenger hard, reason BBM is exclusive to BlackBerry - there's no app for that anywhere else. Well in the business space they are going to do a full-court-press with MVS, RIM believes it can be a game changer. For consumers BBM for some reason is virtually impossible to disconnect from, I even did a post on that fact and 60% voted that BBM is where it's at.  That's what they want MVS to be in the business world.

Business customers who deploy MVS will be lifelong BlackBerry customers. The way MVS hooks into the corporate phone system and the level of controls you have over the use will make every IT guy smile. The end users will find MVS invaluable as well because it offers you the dream of one voicemail box. MVS brings a whole host of features like 4-digit dialling.

The killer app in MVS 5.0 is Wi-Fi calling. Imagine you're in your hotel in Kuala Lumpur attached to Wi-Fi and you're making calls back to colleagues and customers without grotesque roaming charges. Now the accounting people are happy. In the corporate space that's the trifecta - IT, end users & accounting all happy at the same time.

The new MVS 5.0 brings new pricing along with the new features. RIM is trying to have small businesses embrace this product by offering MVS 5.0 for a reasonable price of $180.00 per CAL. Provided your phone system is compatible with MVS you can be up and running in almost no time.

Well, maybe we're not wild, but after recording Episode 052 I'm definitely beginning to think we're crazy. At least Adam, Bla1ze and myself anyways... Craig seems to keep his wits about him a bit better. :)

At WES 2010 in Orlando last week I had the opportunity to sit down with the CrackBerry.tv camera rolling and talk shop with Alan Brenner, who is the Senior Vice President of the BlackBerry Platform for Research in Motion. As you can imagine with a title like that, a LOT of stuff in the BlackBerry-realm falls under Alan's management, from RIM's core of "delivering the mail" (BES/BIS) to things like BlackBerry MVS, App World and even RIM-built apps like the new Twitter for BlackBerry.

I tossed a lot of questions at Alan during our time together that were things I figured the CrackBerry community would want to hear. We cover topics like App World and BlackBerry app development, gaming on BlackBerry (I was curious to know how high of a priority games on BlackBerry is for RIM - aka how soon we'll see OpenGL on GSM BBs) and touch on the growing need for increased memory on BlackBerry. HUGE thanks to Alan for taking the time to speak to CrackBerry. Enjoy the show!

Following the WES 2010 Keynote (and just before we did our WES 2010 Solution Showcase Speed Tour) we put RIM's Mike Kirkup behind the big CrackBerry.tv camera to hear his quick reactions on the BlackBerry announcements of the show. In his role of Director of Developer Relations, it's easy to see that Mike is clearly excited for what's coming in BlackBerry 6, both for the consumer and what it will mean for developers. Check out the video above for Mike's remarks on BlackBerry 6 as well as BlackBerry MVS, the Pearl 3G and more!

Stay tuned for more... our next CrackBerry.tv video to air is an awesome compilation of Bloggers' reactions to WES 2010.

BlackBerry MVS

This morning we posted the RIM press release on the launch of Mobile Voice System (MVS) 5.0. We've talked about MVS in the past but what is MVS and how does it apply to the real world?

The quick and simple answer to what it is, MVS allows your Blackberry handheld to become one with your corporate desk phone giving you all the same options your deskphone offers you including dial by internal extension & transfers.

It also routes your calls through the PBX for long distance calls. If you're travelling outside your home city your wireless carrier can charge long distance rates that are less than desireable. MVS extends your corporate landline long distance rates to your Blackberry for all calls made with MVS.
