BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac

If you’ve been experiencing issues loading your music onto the PlayBook via BlackBerry Desktop Manager on Mac the latest update that RIM is rolling out may correct that issue. RIM has officially made Desktop Manager version 2.3.2 available for download. The new version is said to allow you to sync media, backup, restore, and update the BlackBerry PlayBook software on tablets running PlayBook OS 2.0.1.

The download should be made available the next time you open Desktop Manager, if not you can go to BlackBerry.com/software and download the latest version for your computer.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Mac

We all know that when it comes to computers, Research In Motion seems to favor the Windows operating system over Mac OS or Linux. This is all too apparent by the frequency that BlackBerry Desktop Manager is updated for each OS, and by the total lack of a RIM provided app for Linux. Desktop Manager updates always come out for Windows first, sometimes skipping Mac all together.

A few days ago we posted about a solution that an independent developer has created for Linux fans, so they can perform the basics that would normally be handled by BlackBerry Desktop Manager, and it was well received judging by the comments on the post. That got us wondering what operating system is most common among our readers, so go ahead and let us know by choosing your primary OS in the poll above.

LinBerry

Are you a Linux user frustrated by the lack of support for BlackBerry Desktop Manager for your computer? You're definitely not alone. It's a long standing complaint that while Research In Motion has provided desktop clients for Windows and Mac users, they haven't made one available for Linux users. Not surprisingly, this leaves a lot of people struggling to find an alternative for backing up their BlackBerry, whether that means using a different computer or adding a Windows partition to their Linux set-up.

One developer decided to try solving this problem and has come up with LinBerry Desktop Manager. Though still in beta, you can download it to your computer and perform many of the tasks that you would normally do with BlackBerry Desktop Manager on your Windows or Mac computer. With LinBerry you can perform backups, manage contacts, manage applications, and use your BlackBerry as a modem for connecting to the internet.

What is expected in future versions?

  • Upgrade the OS of the device.
  • Make Wipe (memory reset) device.
  • Sync with Evolution and / or Thuntherbird Ligthning.
  • Multilingual support beginning with the English language.
  • And much more!

LinBerry was first released as an Alpha build back in 2010, but has since moved into Beta. While it is expected to work with all BlackBerry devices, it has only been tested on the Curve 8310, Curve 8520, Curve 8900, Bold 9000, and Bold 9650. If you're a Linux user and looking for an alternative to the nonexistent BlackBerry Desktop Manager for your OS, you may want to look into LinBerry as a solution. Let us know in the comments how it works for you!

Windows Device Update

As I found out earlier this morning, installing another carrier's OS on your BlackBerry isn't as easy as downloading and deleting the vendor.xml file -- now you have to delete both vendor files. It seems that in one of the updates to BlackBerry Desktop Manager, the vendor.xml file is not only located in one folder, but two. In the past you simply had to delete the lone vendor file and you were well on your way to a clean install with either BlackBerry Desktop Manager or App Loader. Now however, you'll need to dive in a bit more before your PC will see the OS - keep reading and we'll tell you how to seek and destroy (ok, find and delete) those pesky vendor.xml files.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager

Following up on the Windows release of BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.1.0 bundle 38, BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac has a new update rolling out as well. This update bumps the software up to v2.2.0.17 which adds support for the BlackBerry Curve 9380 but also includes support for the Bold 9790 and the Porsche P'9981. The latest BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac has finally been released after a long stay in the BlackBerry Beta Zone. v2.2.0 build 10 was what was tested, and now v2.2.0 build 17 has been posted for all. No change log is available as of yet for this release but safe to assume it's mostly bug fixes and general support for newer devices that is built-in. Thanks, @Ewakil12!

Note: If you have the old beta installed, you may need to remove it in order to install this version.

One of the things we can never stress enough is the importance of backing up your BlackBerry. Although the information shows it was actually updated on the 15th, we're only now starting to see the in-app update information pop up as folks start attaching their new BlackBerry smartphones to their Macs. BlackBerry Desktop Manager v2.1.2 Build 8 is now available for Mac users through the BlackBerry website or through BlackBerry Desktop Manager's in-app update process. From the looks of it, it just adds support for all the new BlackBerry 7 devices now that they are official:

Support for new smartphones:

  • BlackBerry® Torch™ 9810
  • BlackBerry® Torch™ 9850
  • BlackBerry® Torch™ 9860
  • BlackBerry® Bold™ 9900
  • BlackBerry® Bold™ 9930

That's about it, nothing dramatic has changed in the app -- just support for new devices but still nice to see an update roll out pretty quickly. The release notes (PDF) and user-guide (PDF) have also been made available should you need them.
