BlackBerry Bold touch gets Wi-Fi Alliance certification

Considering pretty much everything else about the BlackBerry Bold touch has already been leaked, we figured we might as well really drive the information home and let you all know that the device -- the "BlackBerry Bold 9900" as it is designated within the Wi-Fi Alliance has now received their certification.

Although the documentation is rather short on any finer details, it does indeed confirm the BlackBerry Bold touch has 2.4GHz & 5GHz Wi-Fi bands on board. Something that came up in the spec sheets leaks previously but is now no longer in question at all.

How many days is it until BlackBerry World? Let's just hope RIM comes up with a different way to introduce it rather then showing us a video we've already seen and you know, gives us a launch date since that really is the only thing left remaining to leak out or be confirmed at this point.

BlackBerry 9900 outed via UAProf document

If you've been following BlackBerry pre-release devices for a while now you'll know the BlackBerry 9900 is a number that has been referenced on many occasions in the past. The only problem with that is that its reference alone leads down a long path of both real and fake devices. Most of which are touch based, Bold iterations. The latest usage of the BlackBerry 9900 is massive step forward to everyone seeing a device bearing those numbers become a reality.

As we saw on the BlackBerry 2011 Roadmap the "Bold Touch" or BlackBerry Dakota (GSM) and BlackBerry Montana (CDMA) are now in the works and the referenced but never used BlackBerry 9900 now has a UAProf document to go along with it. When looking at the document you can note it was created on February 23. Previous to that, and shortly after the BlackBerry 2011 Roadmap leaked out the document never existed. I know because I checked looking for this exact UAProf to reference to, the server only returned errors. The fact that it is now there, only leads me to believe we're one step closer to seeing the BlackBerry Dakota show up fairly soon.

*UPDATE* As PacFu noted in the comments, this could also be the BlackBerry Torch 2 given that it states QWERTY rather then virtual as shown on what is presumed to be the Monaco / Monza also now listed as the BlackBerry 9850.

The last couple of weeks have been full of leaks regarding the 2011 BlackBerry Smartphone roadmap, so we had a LOT to talk about on this CrackBerry Podcast. But before we get to the phones, we first spend a bunch of time talking BlackBerry PlayBook, going through many of the frequently asked questions that have been popping up in the forums.

This was a fun episode and definitely one you'll want to listen to (aka, if you've never listened before, this is a good one to start off on!). The PlayBook conversation dominates the first half of the show, so for all the phone talk you'll want to jump to 44m15s into the show. On the phone front, we're talking BlackBerry Bold Touch, BlackBerry Curve Touch, monaco (full touchscreen), Torch 2, next generation Curve and more. It's a whack load of phones.

Last but not least, we're happy to have Craig back on this episode, joining Adam, Bla1ze, Joseph and myself. We had fun recording this one, so hope you enjoy the show!

BlackBerry Bold Touch

While we recently saw information and photos leak to the net about the gsm BlackBerry dakota, you can think of the BlackBerry montana as dakota's CDMA sibling. With both the montana and dakota likely to hit the market under BlackBerry Bold Touch branding, this is RIM's thinnest BlackBerry ever with premium materials and finishes and a forged, machined stainless steel frame. The BlackBerry Montana's features and specs include:

  • Dimensions: 115 x 66 x 10.5mm
  • Processor: Qualcomm 1.2GHz CPU
  • Radio: 800/1900 MHz EvDO Rev A with Receive Diversity (PCS Only); Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE; Dual Band UMTS (HSPA 7.2/5.76) 900/2100MHz
  • Display: 2.8" diagonol - VGA 640 x 480, resolution 287dpi
  • Camera: 5mp - Flash - Image Stabilization - HD Recording (720p)
  • Navigation: Capacitive Touch, Optical Trackpad
  • Keypad: Wide QWERTY - Physical Send, End, Escape, Menu, Right Side Convenience Key, Volume Control
  • Memory: 8GB - 768MB RAM - up to 32GB MicroSd Crad
  • WiFi: 2.4 GHZ b/g/n - 5GHz a/n - Mobile Hotspot
  • Connectivity: Micro USB - Bluetooth - NFC
  • Sensors: Magnetometer - Accelerometer - Proximity

All in all, if you like BlackBerry Smartphones with keyboards and are on a CDMA carrier, this will be the device to have!

BlackBerry Dakota

The elusive BlackBerry Dakota has made its way back into the spotlight. BGR has revealed the specs for  the rumored QWERTY/touchscreen BlackBerry. It looks like the device is still out there in the shadows somewhere and has some pretty impressive specs to go with it. It holds basically the same form factor as the Bold series, but mixes a full QWERTY keyboard with a touchscreen. It also sports HD video, 4GB of storage with 768MB of RAM and can be used as a mobile 3G hotspot. It also looks like it will ship with BlackBerry 6.1 that we first heard of yesterday. All in all some good stuff here, so lets hope we get some more details on this guy soon. Hit the source link for the full specs.

First Live Images Of The BlackBerry Dakota Emerge?

* Update from Kevin: This is DEFINITELY one of the older pre-dakota prototypes (ie. magnum). Don't expect to be buying this exact device anytime soon (errr.. never). But something nicer and updated is in the works! *

We've been hearing the codename "Dakota" for a while now. The Bold 9000 sized, 3G, Touchscreen device with a full QWERTY keyboard that is also rumored to be using a "Liquid Lens" designed for high quality images. And now the above pic appears on Twitter followed by a second, clearer shot. showing off it's trackball / trackpad-less form factor.

Is it a Dakota? Or is it more likely that this is a Magnum prototype? Or some other prototype that got left in the trash can? Magnum was the predecessor to the Dakota, whose design was scrapped and then transitioned into Dakota. No OS details were mentioned from @cellguru, so it remains unknown if there is even an OS loaded onto it, which makes it a little difficult to say with 100% certainty what device it actually is. We were under the impression that Magnum didn't have a trackpad while Dakota did, plus the actual look and styling of this device seems a tad bit older than that of the latest generation of BlackBerry Smartphones. If it is Magnum, then hopefully we'll see some Dakota soon and that'll clarify the situation. That's all we have for now. Feel free to speculate in the comments. Hopefully some more details will turn up soon. In the meantime, what do you all think of the concept? Liking the notion of a BlackBerry that's half touchscreen, half physical keyboard?
