BlackBerry Beta Zone: Makeover Edition

If for whatever reason you've not logged into the BlackBerry Beta Zone yet today, then you may not have noticed the latest changes. BlackBerry Beta Zone: Makeover Edition took place at some point over the night and now, the BlackBerry Beta Zone is prettier and more functional than ever. Based on the feedback, RIM made the following changes:

  • A more user friendly interface - We’ve redesigned the site from top to bottom. It’s more engaging to use, has more interactive elements, and offers a more intuitive user experience to make sure you can find what you’re looking for quickly and easily.
  • A clearer division between Business and Consumer beta programs - We’ve separated Beta Zone into two distinct sites: Beta Zone and Beta Zone for Business. Beta Zone for Business now has its own dedicated URL so users can more easily access enterprise programs, while consumer users only see content and programs that are of interest to them.
  • More opportunities to get involved - We know Beta Zone members have a lot to say, so we’ve added a blog-style newsfeed to provide the latest Beta Zone news and allow you to comment and share in the conversation. We’ll also be posting more frequent polls and surveys, ensuring that there are more opportunities than ever to provide your feedback.
  • Improved mobile experience - BlackBerry beta testers are always on the move, so we’ve optimized our mobile site to make it easier than ever to provide your feedback on-the-go. We’ve revised the mobile layout, simplified the download process, and added access to a number of features – all to improve your mobile beta testing experience.

Needless to say, the changes are certainly appreciated and things look great over there. If you're a BlackBerry Beta Zone member, go ahead and login. I'm sure Kerri Birch, the Community Manager for the BlackBerry Beta Zone and the rest of the Beta Zone team is waiting to hear what you all think.

BlackBerry Desktop Sofware

If you're looking to test out the latest BlackBerry Desktop Software, you'll find it now available for download in the BlackBerry Beta Zone. Keep in mind, it is only available to North American users though there is no keycode required for installation. The known issues list is long for this one so before you commit to downloading it, make sure you give it a look as it may be something you wish to avoid for now and let those who don't mind bugs work the kinks out. Also, this is for Windows users only -- there is no Mac version offered at this time.

BBM Music

RIM has made a new build of BBM Music available in BlackBerry Beta Zone. The latest release brings the beta build to version 1.2.0.16. RIM didn't offer a change log, but we should be okay to assume it's just bug fixes from the last version they offered. We're also hearing that this may be the final beta before being pushed out to the masses in BlackBerry App World.

As stated in Beta Zone this beta test is only avilable to those in Canada, USA and the UK, so others will just have to wait as they continue the BBM Music rollout. If you arent already a Beta Zone member you can get in on the action at the link below.

  • Facebook application uses HTTP links in browser
  • The Facebook server has returned an unknown error and is not able to fulfill your request. (1500)
  • WiLAN event is not being processed correctly when radio is low or changed
  • Unable to close Facebook using back key on 6.0

BlackBerry Messenger

After a few weeks of nothing happening in the BlackBerry Beta Zone, RIM has now decided to go ahead and get things rolling full steam again. It wasn't all that long ago we saw BlackBerry Messenger v6.2.0.15 appear there and now we have BlackBerry Messenger v6.2.0.24 already available for download. Changes? Quite a bit actually:

Fixed Isses

  • User is returned to the contact list after sending a voice note via the convenience key if the chat is opened from the Messages application.
  • Virtual keyboard does not appear automatically when editing personal message
  • When trying to switch chat from switch chat menu within conversation, user information is partially cutoff
  • Send picture dialog is displayed as a vertical bar for device font size 14.

Known Issues

  • Highlighting a BBM contact displays a different contact's display picture.
  • Pressing the convenience key while the menu is open in a chat returns the user to the contact list if the chat is opened from the Messages application.
  • Scrolling quickly in the inline edit view allows the focus to move out on to the user's avatar.
  • Pressing the Enter key while the focus is on the user's avatar initiates the inline edit view.
  • Some smileys remained as text in a message sent to a multiperson chat for all participants.
  • Send voice note dialog buttons are cut off in landscape mode when the virtual keyboard is displayed.

The update is available now for registered users, so get to downloading. Just remember, it's a beta. If something isn't working right and it's not already a known issue, send feedback so that it can be addressed in a later release update.

BBM Music

A new build of BBM Music is now appearing in the BlackBerry Beta Zone. This release, pushes BBM Music into version 1.2.0.13 and actually brings along quite a few changes with it. Looking at the list, here's a short summery of what has been changed:

  • Invitation Requests - Discovering similar musical tastes just got easier! When an invitation request is sent from a ‘friend of a friend’ through Recent Updates you will now be able to view songs and the common friend before accepting/declining an invitation.
  • ‘Favorite’ Songs and Contacts - You can now highlight songs or contacts as favorites in BBM Music 1.2! To favorite a song, you need to click on the star displayed in the top left hand corner while listening to a specific song. When the star is highlighted yellow, this will indicate the song as a “favorite” and you will now be able to access this song through “favorite songs” on your profile tab. Favorite songs will be displayed to your friends in Recent Updates For a favorite contact, when you visit a contact’s page you can select “favorite” from the top menu bar. This will add a highlighted yellow star beside the contact’s name in the contacts tab which will only be visible to you. You will now have the ability to search by “favorite”contacts within the contacts tab.
  • Intelligent Shuffle - Intelligent shuffle offers you the ability to shuffle songs by favorite songs, genre, artist, song popularity, album, contact, release year or recently added. To access the intelligent shuffle, on the home tab click “shuffle” which will display the shuffle menu shown below.
  • A Default Friend for all New Users - New users to BBM Music will now have a default friend listed as a contact.
  • Application Enhancements - If you are an existing BBM Music user you will also notice improved notification for friends already using BBM Music, improved performance at startup and easier access to account information from the profile screen.

The update is available to folks in the US, Canada and the UK. When you login to the BlackBerry Beta Zone it will show as a new beta, that you need to sign up for. If you're already a BBM Music premium subscriber, please ensure you read the upgrade process.

BBM

With RIM having been rolling out a few other beta's recently, it's no suprise a new version of BlackBerry Messenger has now popped up as well. RIM seemingly hasn't sent out emails for it yet, but it's there. v6.2.0.15 is what it is listed at and RIM shared some release notes for it:

  • Animated display pictures - More animated display pictures are now built into BBM. Change your picture to suit your mood.
  • Change your name or message inline - You can quickly change your name or status message without leaving your contact list by clicking the text at the top of the screen. To exit inline editing, just scroll down. You can still access your profile screen by clicking your display picture.
  • Streamlined voice notes - When your convenience key set to open BlackBerry Messenger, if you highlight a contact in BBM and press the convenience key, you can start recording a voice note. Once you're done, pressing the convenience key again will send the voice note. Group chats. You can return to the default color at any time.
  • BlackBerry Tag enhancements - Adding contacts has never been easier. If your BlackBerry smartphone supports NFC technology, you can turn on the Allow Automatic Invitations by Tapping option. Then, as long as you or someone else has BBM open, you can add each other as contacts by aligning the backs of your smartphones. This feature requires that you both have the latest version of BBM installed on smartphones that support NFC technology.
  • Improved search - When typing the name of a contact or group, the search ignores special characters and emoticons to make it easier to find what you're looking for.
  • Resend a message  - If a message didn't send (for example, if your smartphone was outside of a wireless coverage area), you can highlight the message and select Resend from the menu.

If you're a member of the BlackBerry Beta Zone, you should be able to login and find it listed under your eligible programs as it shows up as a new beta. Thanks, Alberto!
