Free BlackBerry 7 Apps

If you haven’t had a chance to open up App World on your BlackBerry smartphone and download those free BlackBerry 7 apps, then I suggest you do so soon. RIM has just sent out a reminder via their social networking sites that the promotion for the free applications will end on May 31st. The promo started in the U.S. back in March and then was later expanded to include Canada. In the promotion, RIM had included some of the top selling apps that showcase some of the BlackBerry 7 features, apps like BeBuzz, Screen Muncher, BeWeather, and more totaling about $77 in free stuff which is okay in my books.

Free Premium apps courtesy of BlackBerry

If you’re able to cash in on the promotion I suggest you do so as it ends on May 31st. I’ve personally downloaded them all, I may not need them now, but I may want them later. The question I really would like to ask is, which apps have the CrackBerry Nation downloaded?

Hyundai Launches All-New Blue Link

We’ve started to see BlackBerry and RIM gain momentum over the past few weeks, pretty much since they demonstrated the all-new BlackBerry 10 operating system. Today Hyundai USA has announced that their new Blue Link car connect application would be coming to BlackBerry in the coming months. The app will allow you to start and unlock your car, among a bevy of other features that will make the car connect application an "industry" leader, according to Hyundai USA.

Blue Link Mobile App Highlights

  • Completely redesigned interface and navigation
  • Swipe gestures allow quick access to core features
  • Remotely access many Blue Link® features found on MyHyundai.com
  • Manage multiple Blue Link-enrolled vehicles
  • Remotely control vehicle functions: Door lock/unlock, horn & lights,
  • lights-only and remote vehicle start (not available on all models)
  • Search, save and send POIs to vehicles for in-car navigation
  • Innovative new features: car finder, parking meter/timer and vehicle diagnostics
  • Remotely manage Blue Link alerts and notifications

The application is currently available on Android and iOS and is currently in development for the BlackBerry platform. One thing to note is that there wasn’t a mention if this app is being developed for the current BlackBerry platform or BlackBerry 10; if Hyundai is on the ball they’ll make sure it’s available on the current platform as well. Stay tuned because once the application is available we’ll take to the streets to test it out. You can read the full press release below.

Evernote for BlackBerry

Evernote is one of the CrackBerry staff's favorite apps, and it's really no wonder why. It's versatile, easy to use, and cross platform syncing ensures that you'll always have your stuff when you need it, no matter what device you're on. Evernote also receives fairly frequent updates, and today's update brings the BlackBerry app to v3.5.407. While not a huge jump from the last version, this one does have a couple of important fixes.

  • Fix issue with BES blocking any connection
  • Fix issue on note loading blocking syncing

Make sure if you have the app installed on your BlackBerry you head over to App World and grab the update. And if you aren't currently an Evernote user, you can use the link below to rectify that.

TopGear for BlackBerry

BBC Worldwide has developed an application for the hit show Top Gear and it's now available on the BlackBerry platform. Top Gear – News is available on the BlackBerry PlayBook as well as BlackBerry smartphones. The application has been designed to allow fans to keep connected when they missed an episode and between episodes. The application features latest news updates, Top Gear opinions, videos, and a whole lot more.

Features:

  • All the latest news, rants and opinions from Top Gear
  • Videos and photo galleries
  • Behind the scenes exclusives from the team
  • Your favorite clips from the Top Gear show
  • Previews of upcoming Top Gear stuff
  • The latest cars driven and reviewed

From within the application you are able to read the latest articles and share them with your BBM contacts. Of course if they do not have the app they will be prompted to download it to read the post. Along with BBM integration you can also share via FaceBook, Twitter, and email.

Of course, the Playbook doesn’t have BBM connected capabilities, but its version still offers a lot of the same features you would find on the phones. The benefit to using Top Gear on the PlayBook is that you will have a larger screen to watch the video clips. Top Gear on your smartphone is perfect for portability, it isn’t the best for viewing video. If you have both a BlackBerry smartphone and tablet I would highly recommend downloading the application on both. With the app on both you’ll never be out of date on the newest from Audi, BMW, or Porsche.

If you have not watched Top Gear and have a thing for cars I suggest you download the app, and check your local listings for availability.

Jonas Norberg, CEO and Pacemaker, gave a sneak peak of at their upcoming app for the BlackBerry PlayBook during the keynote general session at BlackBerry World this morning. The app will allow you to mix, sync, and scratch digital music on your BlackBerry PlayBook, as well as apply effects, loop, and much more to provide a rich DJ experience. Jonas stated that they were looking for a mobile platform to create an app for, and after much investigation they chose the PlayBook for its QNX OS, as it's the only "true, real-time operating system" on a mobile device. Can't wait for Pacemaker to launch; it looks amazing!

BlackBerry Bridge

If you're a BlackBerry PlayBook and smartphone owner you'll be happy to hear that BlackBerry Bridge has just received an update to v2.0.0.30. The change log is short on this one listing only a fix for predictive text issues on PlayBook OS 2.0.1, but I know some of you out there have been anxiously waiting for this to be resolved. Now, as we all know, a Bridge update is usually followed close behind by a PlayBook OS update but whether or not that's the case this time around, I guess time will tell.

The update should be available for most of you in BlackBerry App World, but if not you can try refreshing with ALT+R,S,T or just sit tight and wait for it to be pushed to your device.

Better Tasks

While the native BlackBerry task application is simple and gets the job done, sometimes you need a little more flare and a few options to make a more rounded task list. If you’re anything like myself you’ll want to have the most elaborate task list known to man -- everything detailed and simple to read with dates, times and priority markers.  This is where an application like Better Tasks by MLH Software comes in handy. The application is fully integrated with the native application to allow cross-talk for task completion and notifications.

Features

  • Super App integration with native task list
  • Folders for task separation
  • Attractive UI
  • Much more...

Working here at CrackBerry can get a little hectic with devices launching, new apps to write about and events to be at, so having a better task list will help stay on track. The application can be found in BlackBerry App World for devices running OS 6.0 and higher. Better Tasks has been priced at $3.99, but with a few trials being made available so you can assess if it’s an app that you would find useful in your day to day routine. It’s something I’ve found useful, but it all depends on how crazy your day can get.

Card2Contact

A few weeks back we told you about a new app for BlackBerry that allowed you to simply take photos of business cards and then with the magic of real people that business card would be transcribed into a real contact and sent back to your BlackBerry smartphone to be placed into your contact list. While many of CrackBerry Nation thought this was a good idea, many also thought there were places that needed improvement. The team from Card2Contact listened and came back with version 3.0 of their application.

What’s new in 3.0

  • Enhanced Contacts page.
  • You can view the business cards that you have uploaded and find its processing status.
  • Easy navigation (Touch or button click) for scrolling the business cards.
  • In App Email feature to the users.
  • Enhanced Home page design.
  • Support page to provide your comments and request for a credit back.

Not only did they make some changes to the application itself, they also added a more friendly pricing structure. In the new pricing structure you get 15 credits for $4.99, 35 credits for $9.99, and 75 credits for $19.99. If you are frequently adding contacts to your BlackBerry via business cards you’ll for sure want to check out Card2Contact in BlackBerry App World.
