Film for BlackBerry PlayBook

If there's one thing my parents passed down to me growing up it was their love of movies. I can't remember a time when we weren't watching movies or reading reviews about movies. So it was no surprise that when the internet was born, my family of cinephiles now had an outlet to discover everything there was to know before we schlepped all the way to theater. If you fit that description then check out Film for BlackBerry PlayBook by Cappow. It's a nifty little IMDB or Wikipedia alternative previously available for BlackBerry devices. It enables you to view movie information and trailers right on your tablet for those currently playing, ones yet to be released, and those that have come and gone.

Features

  • High Quality trailers, with subtitles in your local language
  • Movie information, plot, cast, director
  • Movie reviews (Rank movies, Write short reviews)
  • Featured movies
  • Movies Now In Cinemas (location-based)
  • Upcoming movies (location-based)
  • Newest movies
  • Movie database, search for movies by title
  • Available in the following languages, Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Danish, Swedish, Finnish and for Switzerland German and French

Film for BlackBerry PlayBook offers quick overviews, links to YouTube for HD trailers, allows you to add your own reviews, and gives the ability to search for new and upcoming films by genre. Cappow let us know they just updated their app and database to include USA/Canada. For a limited time you can grab this app for just $.99 in BlackBerry App World.

Easy Smileys

When it comes to expressing yourself via email, text, Facebook and Twitter, why not show everyone how you feel instead of using 140 characters to tell it. No matter what mood you're in, adding smileys or text embellishments is the perfect way to get your point across. With EasySmileys by LaurentCie you can insert characters without the trouble of typing on the keyboard or fumbling with the touchscreen.

EasySmileys is an easy to use application with over two hundred and fifty characters varying in topic such as animals, people, events, emotions, and anything else you can think of. These are definitely not your typical sad, frowning, and happy smileys. Sci-Fi fans can send representations of Princess Leia and Yoda while kids can giggle over Sponge Bob and Teletubbies. There are all sorts of smileys included for people of all ages to enjoy. I'm getting addicted to the bored, awkward or annoyed ones. Don't think that this list is set in stone. You can add your own or view updates by the developer on his Google Group site.

I fell in love with this app the minute I downloaded it. It's a fun to have on your device and takes up only 59kb of memory. So head on over to the CrackBerry app store now and start adding a little extra oomph to your status updates and messages.

Features

  • Create your own or manage your favorites in a separate list
  • Copy and paste directly into any BlackBerry and social networking application
  • English, French, Spanish, and Polish translations available
  • Assign to a side convenience key to easily open the application wherever you are
  • More than 250 smileys, art ascii, unicode, and text embellishments

EasySmileys supports all BlackBerry devices and is available at the CrackBerry App store for $2.99. Keep reading for more images.

Rate Your Day

Did you ever wish you had a simple way to keep track of your good days and bad days? Almoko has created a simple application called Rate Your Day just for this purpose. This app not only lets you rate your day up to 5 stars, but it also lets you add a short comment for each day. You can share your daily ratings with your friends via Twitter for BlackBerry and/or FaceBook for BlackBerry with the click of a button. You can even compare your daily ratings with other users based on your Zodiac sign.

Rate Your Day is really a cute app and a fun idea. It can also have a practical use, for example if you need to keep track of your moods over a period of time. And because all of your data is stored on the web, you don't have to worry about your history being lost if you need to delete the application from your device. When you reinstall it, all of your indormation is right there. On top of all this, Rate Your Day is completely free, and has no ads.

Call monitoring applications can be your best friend or worst enemy, while they keep away the calls you don't want to come through, they can just as easily be keeping away some of the extremely important calls that you do want to come through. Setting up lists that allow and don't allow certain calls to filter through at various times can be a bit of a daunting task since you don't want to miss any on the allow list that could possibly cause you to miss that important phone call from the school or a doctor. Qwell is a new BlackBerry application that will change the way users have to monitor their calls since there is no longer and allow and do not allow list that has to be created.

Instead of creating lists, users will activate the application which then is good for all inbound calls. Now don't fear, this does not mean that you are then rejecting all the inbound calls, instead it gives the caller a chance to decide the importance of the call. While the application is active it will give the callers a message stating that you are not accepting calls currently but if it is important they can then chose to have the call connected anyway which sends the call to your device. If the caller decides it is not an urgent matter they are then able to leave a voice mail for you to return their call at a later time. While your device is in "Qwell Mode" it keeps track of any missed calls or voice mails that took place during that time so that users are easily able to view this log once they are done with the activity they were doing. Be sure to check out the video after the jump and for more information on this service, as well as a download link head to the Qwell site.

The kind of music you listen to can help define who you are. Have you ever given a mix tape (am I dating myself?) of your favourite tunes to a potential love interest? What about putting together a playlist for your great road trip? I’m sure you have. Judge me if you will - when I was younger, I used to spend a lot of time figuring out my mixes; where to put each song, what cover I should use etc. It is a glimpse into your mind, allowing others to see the world as you see it. Now for some, listening to music is enough self expression. For others, they want to live in it; they want to make music.

These days, it isn’t enough to tote around your guitar or drum sticks. You’re going to need more ammo than that. While you tote your music filled BlackBerry with you, you might as well add some BlackBerry applications to the mix. Yes, there are applications out there to even help you live your dream. This collection may not guarantee that you’ll win a Grammy, or a Juno, but it should put you on the right path. 1…2…1,2,3,4!

BlackBerry Apps for the Blogger

Alright, so you finally did it. You started your own blog - Congratulations. Let your voice be heard, let your words ring true. Let the world know of your great discoveries; a new, innovative invention, a moving musical composition or even the three month old slice of pizza lying beneath your couch (at least it looks like pizza). Whether it is informative, adventurous, NSFW or just plain witty, your blog is your own and you should love it and live it. Say it loud and say it proud. Just don’t use caps - that’s just annoying.

Besides trying to get past writers block or even trying to decide what to actually call your blog, you should decide how to manage it. Do you honestly want to spend all of your time sitting at home or in a WiFi café sipping java, updating others about your sedentary life? Or, do you want to be out in the world, living and posting until you thumbs wear down to stubs? Good! Stubby thumbs it is then. To keep you happily blogging and posting, here is a collection of apps you can use to manage your blog. If you like them, maybe you can post something about them.

The playoffs are well underway and you can feel the Lower Mainland come alive with hockey fever. For me, it’s nice to see such a diverse community come together to cheer on our hockey team. Team colours worn by pedestrians, car flags go whizzing by, horns honking and drunken fans making fools of themselves; that is hockey! Are you sporting a playoff beard? I’m not and yes, I know, I’m bad for not doing so. The Canucks beat the LA Kings in game 6 and are now moving to round two and one step closer towards the Cup.

During the games, it’s fun to turn to Twitter and see what comments are being made, regardless if they are for or against your team. Though your friends may not be on the couch or at the arena with you, BlackBerry Messenger is there to capture every quip made. What else can you do with your BlackBerry to feed your hockey fanaticism? Perhaps dress is up in your teams colours or even use hockey sound effects as your alert tones. But, what about apps? There are a lot of applications out there that you can use to show off your pride, your knowledge and your passion.

Let’s see, we’re nearly five months into this year. How are you doing with your resolutions? Particularly the one you made to start saving money. Have you been managing your finances more efficiently? Or have you been spending so much money that your debit or credit card is starting to melt? We all know it’s always best to make a budget, but it may be difficult to adhere to it. Your grocery budget may dwindle more quickly, as you find yourself dining out or hitting the drive thru more frequently. When a new BlackBerry comes out, will you have money set aside for it, or will you dip into your hydro bill budget? Well, at least you can use a flashlight app on your new BlackBerry to illuminate your place after your electricity gets cut off…until your battery runs out.

Do yourself a favour: put the hammer down and step away from your child’s piggy bank. I’m pretty sure that you would rather try and find alterative means to fix your financial follies, than to explain to your son or daughter why you’re taking their birthday money. Why not check out these applications plucked from a slew of money applications available for your BlackBerry.

BlackBerry Apps for your Ride

Admit it, there’s something you love as much as (or more than) your BlackBerry, isn’t there? Can you guess what I’m talking about? I’ll give you some hints- just like your BlackBerry:
You’re overprotective of it and rarely let anyone use it.

You adorn it with the latest accessories.

You cry if it gets scratched or dinged.

It helps you find what you are searching for.

Any ideas come to mind? Know what it is? Have you neglected to read the title of this article that practically points out to what the heck I’m talking about? It’s your car. Be it the SSC Ultimate Aero or a jalopy you inherited from your dad, you treasure your car. These days, it’s difficult to enjoy both at the same time, though rightfully so. As much as you may think it is a pain, wireless bans are in place for a reason. Now that doesn’t mean that you can’t use your BlackBerry to help out your car. As long as you use it responsibly (or are very sneaky), you can take advantage of some great applications. Let’s check out a selection of these applications that will get you into gear.

You stand there, staring into the cold eyes of your adversary. For months they have been taunting you and now, in their fall from grace, they attempt to deny their fate. You approach your foe with a renewed confidence- the last snowman of winter. You watch as he slowly melts away and imagine hearing its silent screams. With its last moments, it defiantly raises its arm/branch and flips you the bird before fading away.

Folks, welcome to Spring!

Okay so it was a little over dramatic, but you try growing up with Winters where your nostrils stick together every time you breathe. Love it or hate it, Winter is gone and Spring is here. It’s a season of new beginnings and with that, new projects. Why not get them started the right way, with the right apps on your BlackBerry? The sooner you tackle them, the sooner you can enjoy Spring before Summer comes along.

RIM Offering BlackBerry Push Service To All BlackBerry Developers

Back during the BlackBerry Developers Conference last year, Research In Motion made the announcement that the BlackBerry Push APIs would be available to all developers for free within the first half of 2010. In keeping with their promise, Research In Motion has made available today two levels of push services.

  • BlackBerry Push Essentials - is a free service that developers can incorporate into their applications and allows them to push content to their customers with unparalleled immediacy.
  • BlackBerry Push Plus - which has a free tier and paid tiers, provides developers with notification that their push has been delivered. If a content provider needs to get information to someone, they can tell if the target device has received the push.

While this is great news for developers, it's also great news for end users. Many applications out there already make use of push services. But previously, those services cost quite a bit for developers to implement into applications. Now with two service offerings being available to developers for either free or on a paid basis we should see plenty more apps delivering content. With all this push goodness happening, makes me wonder how much more use it's going to see in later OS'.
