T-Mobile Bold 9700 Wireless Update to 5.0.0.714?
We've had a few emails on this so far, so we figured it was time to post it up and see what its all about. It seems that some T-Mobile Bold 9700 users have been provided an OTA software update that ended with OS 5.0.0.714 installed on their devices. T-Mobile just issued an official OS update to 5.0.0.586 last week, so this newer version seems like a bit of odd timing. The users are mostly reported to be running an official T-Mobile OS when seeing the upgrade, but I haven't been so lucky on my 9700 just yet. So T-Mobile users - whats the story? Do you have the option to upgrade to 5.0.0.714 OTA? Leave a comment and let us know so we can figure out just what's going on!
SDenis May 27, 2010 at 9:04 am
I went to OTA update and got nothing... I am liking .586 even tho there's newer leaks, this one works effortlessly. For me atleast. I wonder what this update will do different
Spiral_ouT May 27, 2010 at 11:39 am
No OTA for a new OS, but don't really care till its OS6.
.586 is working great. Strong 3G signal that doesn't drop when I'm in call and everything else is satisfactory as well.
devGOD May 27, 2010 at 6:04 pm
does the OS OTA update add all files or does it only update the files that match what you have on your system? I dont want to go back and strip out all the TMO and RIM crap that takes up space
laurent08 May 27, 2010 at 9:06 am
Like .586 except for a few minors:
Cant use 'K' to keylock anymore.
Screen often takes a while to turn on after pressing a key.
I seem to have a lot less available memory than i had on .330 (down to 79MB after battery pull).
c3ntauri May 27, 2010 at 9:07 am
I just checked on my 9700 and got no Updates found.
dirtybird072 May 27, 2010 at 9:07 am
I checked and nothing. I will be keeping my eye on this update. I just upgraded to .680 Tuesday, so 2 upgrades in one week would make me happy!!!
rroyy May 27, 2010 at 9:11 am
You should use T-Mobile provided firmware to see updates in ota update section. I'm using 680 from another vendor so there no possibilty to upgrade while it opens to public.
nextgenius May 27, 2010 at 9:14 am
is that really the case? I wouldn't want to downgrade from 656 and not be able to receive the ota.
rroyy May 27, 2010 at 9:49 am
I already downgrade to 686 T-Mo USA but nothin changes there is no updates. If It's happened beacause not usin T-mo network I dont have anythink to do because I'm livin' in Turkey and use Turkcell Network.
devilsadidas May 29, 2010 at 10:47 am
why down grade your os just so it will OTA and update??? why not just DL and install the new???
vx1 May 27, 2010 at 9:20 am
stranger things have been known to happen
gio54 May 27, 2010 at 9:28 am
No luck i wish i was running 5.0.0.714
syb0rg May 27, 2010 at 9:32 am
.680 and no update avail yet.
mpaulson May 27, 2010 at 9:35 am
My brother is running .545 and I just updated to .680. No wireless update available.
Striker317 May 27, 2010 at 9:36 am
for v 5.0.0.680, the platform version was 5.1.0.160
if this is really v 5.0.0714 with a platform version of 5.1.0.146, why would the platform version be so far behind .680's platform?
syb0rg May 27, 2010 at 9:41 am
BlackBerry Handheld Software v5.0.0.1149 (EastAsia)
Package Version: 5.0.0.1149
Consisting of:
Applications: 5.0.0.680
Software Platform: 5.1.0.160
File name: 9700jEastAsia_PBr5.0.0_rel1149_PL5.1.0.160_A5.0.0. 680_Hutchison.exe
File size: 128.04MB
Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.
The packet is .1149....... most likely why bitbop doesn't work.. to new of a platform.
Striker317 May 27, 2010 at 10:38 am
I'm comparing the platform version released with the application. I'm not talking about the package version.
Both generally tend to increase as newer fw versions are released. It would be peculiar for the platform version to decrease by such a large degree while the application version increases.
infinus May 27, 2010 at 9:43 am
Experimenting with your device.
infinus May 27, 2010 at 9:39 am
What is main motive behind these leak OS
Official OS may be help with some general bugs and carrier related issues.
They look same behave same....
Its a hugh pain to repeat same thing again and again....
syb0rg May 27, 2010 at 9:42 am
A leak ... it a rumor that T-Mobile is updating their phones.
infinus May 27, 2010 at 9:45 am
Check out their Device OS site, you will find new one.
Ichthus May 27, 2010 at 10:09 am
Device software on TMO site still .586
lowfire#CB May 27, 2010 at 9:41 am
No dice here either....and it's the company phone, don't feel like manually upgrading then handing it over to IT retard to reactivate it on the BES....still running .330 :(
nickb2005#cb May 27, 2010 at 9:46 am
I looked under wireless update and I had nothing too? I really want to upgrade to this OS. Someone provide some insight for me.
drkraven May 27, 2010 at 9:48 am
I just got the email to update to the 5.0.0.586 last week, which is what I am now running, the update takes the "lock screen" with the exception of the top left button... which irritates me, but other than that no issues so far.
datta72 May 27, 2010 at 9:50 am
Nothing over here......I really don't like the .586 update anyway. i miss my lock key and i've had too many damm issues with not being able to make phone calls or my internet services randomly not working which is starting to drive me crazy
cdeblaw May 27, 2010 at 9:56 am
I checked....no OTA
Ichthus May 27, 2010 at 10:04 am
That would be great if this becomes true! I don't believe their .586 update really resolved their 3G dropped call issue. I think the radio quality on .586 is ok but not great. Would love to see them realize this and move ahead with another release!
SLVR6 May 27, 2010 at 10:33 am
So why has no one chimed in here who actually has the update? Sounds cool....except that I am loading 680 right now!
jshuford May 27, 2010 at 10:52 am
I am at the T-Mobile available downloads site and the only device OS update that I see listed is: v5.0.0.586...Maybe I just don't see it?
DaX05 May 27, 2010 at 11:03 am
I'm running v5.0.0.656 & I have no luck either.
autobahntoo May 27, 2010 at 11:22 am
Tried OTA update, nothing. Tried T-mobile site, nothing. I don't so much care right now. I updated to .586 last week. I can now use 3G and UMA, couldn't before. NO dropped calls (knock on wood). Battery life sticks now but I do still get through the day. Device seems snappier now.
Bibojim May 27, 2010 at 11:30 am
Nothing on my phone or at T-Mobile
lccurtis1 May 27, 2010 at 11:54 am
I just ventured over to T-mobiles support site and v5.0.0.714 is NOT and option at this time. However I am curious as to what changes come along with this updated ROM?
XWolf May 27, 2010 at 11:56 am
Ok, so there have been reports and a screenie so far but is this American T-Mo, Uk or another country?
wickedny5 May 27, 2010 at 12:10 pm
i call BS.. need more evidence, one can easily with an app take a screen shot of their about screen and photoshop it, put it back in their picture folder and viola.. i have a leaked OS v8.0.0.101 on a platform .146! Hilarious
PDM May 27, 2010 at 7:11 pm
You can call ghostbusters for all I care! :)
IT's OUT there!
jshuford May 27, 2010 at 12:10 pm
I took the liberty of checking out the Platform number in the pic and it comes back as version
5.0.0.586
zuckas May 27, 2010 at 12:22 pm
How do you check for firmware upgrade from your phone anyway?
I know about http://www.t-mobile.com/bbupgrade. But where is the option to check for this OTA update from the phone?
jshuford May 27, 2010 at 12:26 pm
Options, Advanced Options, Wireless Update.
bbeezy May 27, 2010 at 12:29 pm
good. but not good enough. compare the numbers '714' with the other numbers on the screen. if your screen is big enough, you can clearly see that the numbers 7,1, and 4 look differernt from the other 7,1, and 4. the photoshopped 4 and 1 looks.....skinnier than the others.
Blacklac May 27, 2010 at 12:32 pm
So is anyone that chimed in even on T-Mobile?! LOL geez...
I think you need to stick with their official OS's to get any OTA notifications.
datta72 May 27, 2010 at 1:30 pm
I'm on T-Mobile....lol, idk if thats a good or bad thing though
tfrankson May 27, 2010 at 12:44 pm
as well
carlosg2002 May 27, 2010 at 2:06 pm
I am on TMO and running the official recent OS and no wireless update as of yet!!! heres hoping!
xraytedjim May 27, 2010 at 2:09 pm
So 42 people have commented on here and not 1 person has been able to get this update? Why is crackberry posting bogus shit today. First this bogus story, and then the iheartradio app update (which doesn't update).?? Is crackberry gonna post an update on this story? It doesn't seem to be accurate.
CharredPC May 27, 2010 at 3:56 pm
Obviously photoshopped (and not that well), obviously fake, and the story doesn't even make sense. Sorry, not impressed or waiting on the edge of my seat.
joe361 May 27, 2010 at 4:05 pm
No update available.
FahCore May 27, 2010 at 5:06 pm
I woke up this morning and saw this new blog up via twitter. I clicked check for updates and it found .714. Took forever for ota to install everything. Still missing my lock screen....
kpd1999 May 27, 2010 at 5:20 pm
I haven't seen anything on mine yet. I hope they fix the text messages. Mine are still locking up. Anyone else having that problem on .586?? It's rather annoying
CharredPC May 27, 2010 at 5:21 pm
FahCore:
You are the first verification I've seen anywhere of this. Where are you (UK, USA, etc)? No one else has found it.
FahCore May 27, 2010 at 5:36 pm
I'm on T-MobileUSA.
CharredPC May 27, 2010 at 5:39 pm
That's bizarre. So am I, and I'll bet most of the others here are as well. So your About screen looks just like the picture posted here? It reports .714, not .586?
jshuford May 27, 2010 at 5:47 pm
What is the nearest major city to you? Niles, IL?
FahCore May 27, 2010 at 5:53 pm
I live on the north side of Chicago, Niles is the suburb I work in
jshuford May 27, 2010 at 5:58 pm
I didn't mean to be publicly nosy :D
FahCore May 27, 2010 at 5:48 pm

Phony bologna May 27, 2010 at 5:53 pm
I upgraded to .586 (or whatever it is) and used it for a day before downgrading back to .330 because of the AWFUL way .586 was showing images on the device. At first I thought my card was corrupted but after checking, I realized it was just the way the device shows pictures with the new OS. I know there's more to the 9700 than just taking pics but I just couldn't stand looking at artifact-laden pics on such a lovely screen. RIM techs, what are you, stupid? I'm actually pretty surprised that no one else mentioned this. Maybe it was just my device but I don't know how that could be.
CharredPC May 27, 2010 at 6:03 pm
RIM made the executive decision to fast-cache the image files for quick loading. This makes them appear grainy / poor quality, and occurs in ALL newer OS versions, just like the new locking system. "Solutions" are to either press "1" while viewing each pic, or deleting the cached *.dat file. I agree, though, both are temporary lousy workarounds. This is definitely one area where I'd take quality over speed any day. We need a setting somewhere to opt out of this new default behavior.
Phony bologna May 28, 2010 at 3:43 am
It's funny, I follow multiple tech blogs daily and never read this before. I've also never read anyone complain about it, which I found very odd because to me it's shockingly bad image quality. Your post was very informative and I appreciate the clarification. I absolutely agree, we need to be able to opt out of this. Sometimes I wonder if RIM techs are truly as out of touch from what consumers want as some critics claim. When I see this sort of dumb behavior from a new OS, I'm really starting to wonder. Who wants to look at a photo that's that ugly? We don't have beautiful screens just to read pretty fonts.
CharredPC May 27, 2010 at 5:57 pm
Trusting FahCore, this seems to be a legitimate (if slowly rolled-out) silent update. The info listed-
v5.0.0.714 (Platform 5.1.0.146)
-tells us that this is the .586 platform, with .714 Java files, customized by T-Mobile. Sort of like their own hybrid release, probably for carrier-specific bug fixes. I'm going to take a wild guess that this another attempt to solve the 3G issues that plague T-Mobile 9700 owners. It might even be only available within the areas where these problems are worst, so support agents can recommend this as a possible fix.
Still leaves me wondering why they 'shopped the posted pic. Is a real screenshot so hard to do?
jshuford May 27, 2010 at 6:01 pm
If FahCore would install "Capture it" a screen would be simple!
FahCore May 27, 2010 at 7:16 pm
I dont see a way to post a pic in comment/reply area of blog, But I used zonasnap to take a pic of my about screen and can now be seen on my twitter @fahcore
jshuford May 27, 2010 at 7:23 pm
Thank you FahCore for your help...

That's 5.0.0.586, not 5.0.0.714 ;)
tyspeed29 May 27, 2010 at 11:36 pm
My Bad, sorry. Wrong version.
vod332 May 28, 2010 at 2:33 am
I spoke to a TMO business employee today and this is the response I received when asked about .714.
"I should have a download link for customer use end of next week (official .714 bundle), so you will not have to use the OTASL process."
Think this puts the "real discussion" to rest?
renegadedev May 28, 2010 at 12:47 pm
This update is currently in the testing phase and is available via Wireless Update only for T-Mo employees attached to the company BES. They test the updates like this to fix bugs before releasing to the general public :)
If it's any consolation, I had the .586 update 2 months ago, officially, and through Wireless Upgrade.
mi_canuck Jun 1, 2010 at 4:24 pm
running .586 right now... wireless update comes up empty (I'm on T-Mo US)... :(
cmeagher Jun 4, 2010 at 12:54 am
I just upgraded to the .586 and my standby key isn't working at all and my lock button isn't working properly. Did anyone else have these issues or know how to resolve them?
muratguzeldere Jun 9, 2010 at 5:01 pm
I want to know what is the latest OS for bold 9700 for the Tmobil service but an at&t phone. I'm currently using v5.0.0.296 (Platform 5.1.0.83)
w_flowers2000 Jun 23, 2010 at 6:56 am
I just downloaded the new software. Haven't seen a difference yet. I hope it solves the problems I was having with my phone!
magnate Jun 23, 2010 at 8:58 am
I installed the 5.0.0.714 OS upgrade last night, and (so far) I have not experienced any of the bugs I've previously been plagued with. Is there any intel on what this specifically improved/patched?
TimB0617 Jun 23, 2010 at 2:06 pm
i went to bb desktop manager and there it was for upgrade i dl, and to be honest so far i dont really see a difference, but i will def keep you guys updated, until then peace and love!!
chassis9 Jul 8, 2010 at 12:00 pm
hi i found out two things different with this new os
first the standby button doesn't work anymore
second the lock is not lock symbol anymore but its just like a dim on the light off on keypad and screen only on blackscreen
and the last is the folder colour is not yellow but grey colour but overall its quite good, just miss the keylock pad symbol
jonygitar Jul 11, 2010 at 8:01 pm
714 has bogged my phone down.
It seems sluggish all over compared to 586.
I'm considering the dreaded "downgrade."
Any others done this?
Tmobile had me in a loop that kept pestering me to upgrade with an icon and loop that just kept leading me to schedule the update, begging......Really sorry I did it. the phone now doesn't hang on to 3g as well, people on other end notice poor sound quality and scratching.
UMA drops to edge in my house
SMS says "network error" if i type fast.
Camera more sluggish (if that was possible)
Bluetooth link to my Garmin gps drops.
Just seems slower all around, java, don't you love it? What garbage.
Interested in hearing what other users of 714 are saying and whether people are going back to 586.
