Storm Level Pro - First "Tool" to Use Storm's Accelerometer!
Posted in BlackBerry Apps on 17 Jan 2009 12:07 by Kevin Michaluk | 61 comments

Now THIS is Frak'n Sweet!!! Storm Level Pro by Mobigloo is the first app for the BlackBerry Storm that makes use of its built-in accelerometer. Never again will you need to hunt down a ruler or level! Storm Level Pro features include:

  • Calibration for maximum accuracy
  • Level for both vertical and horizontal measures
  • Automatically adjusts to portrait and landscape modes
  • Includes 2 rulers, inches and centimeters

Storm Level Pro sells for $4.99. This is definitely the coolest app I have seen for the BlackBerry Storm to date. It looks good and is USEFUL... qualifies as a must-have app in my book! Makes me wish my Bold and Curve 8900 also had an accelerometer!!

Awesome...I want that!

By: deathbyart | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 12:25

It is kind of relieving to see people program apps for the storm. Now lets see something I can use :P

By: JediJesus95 | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 12:25

I use a level all time at work. This would come in handy!

By: rwing6 | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 12:32

definatly a cool app. if i had a storm i would buy

By: Leo.brazuca | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 12:46

Even if I won't use it everyday or at work it is good to have to put pictures up at my house or office.

Got it, just waiting for the e-mail to download it

By: 11B2P | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 12:55

"Use a long straight wall to calibrate"......finding a true squared wall to properly calibrate this tool is gonna be tough. I would use another level to calibrate, it would have a better chance at being square.

It is cool looking.

By: mad-dog74 | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 12:57

I just downloaded.... pretty neat trick. Seems accurate so far just playing around.

By: Leo.brazuca | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 13:02

Download it and is pretty cool to play around with it

By: Trojan Joe | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 04:35

Geeez .... Now that I have a Pearl Flip, I wanna get a BB Storm to get this! Damn you T-Mobile ... DAMN YOU!!! (Uhhh ... just kiddin' T-Mobile, but it would be swwweeett to have a Storm in the line!)

By: Kevin Michaluk | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 13:22

Here's another nice thing about the app. Once you open it, there's no BlackBerry Menu key options. When you hit end key (red key) that closes the app and it doesn't stay running in the background. Just open and close. Very nice. Maximizes your free memory.

By: rellims | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 13:37

I just downloaded it, against a real level once calibrated its spot on. Nice feature for those random times when a level would come in handy.

By: jai manny (not verified) | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 13:51

why is everything free on Itunes.

This app I got for my itouch for free... what the hell we got to pay for it on the BB

By: numb683 | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 13:59

Now I can rub it in my iphone friends face that I have a level program, because he did it to me. Really cool app.

By: avt123 | Date: Sun, 01/18/2009 - 15:38

And when he opens the Apple Appstore, searches for a leveling app, then goes to download it and it's free, he will now rub it in your face that you just paid $4.99 for an app that he gets to enjoy for free.

By: Anonymous (not verified) | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 14:21

They have this app for the iphone and its FREE! works ok. Good for BB thou

By: Delegator | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 14:25

...if the accelerometer is accurate enough to be used as a level, then why can it be so sluggish and unresponsive when you flip the phone from portrait to landscape mode?

By: napsfan | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 14:38

Ha, fun app. Works great, and one of the "smoother" looking apps so far. One pain is the "side buttons" on the Storm, which can get in the way when trying to level it flat against a surface.

Not sure how often I'll actually use this app, but it's scores well on the "pretty cool" factor.

By: wallyweaver | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 15:05

had to get this because i AM a "fix it" guy and this was too awesome to pass up. it works great and the ruler, although small will come in handy.

By: pilotnh | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 15:13

Not sure I want to use a $500 piece of electronics in my workshop to do the job of a $15 tool I can buy at Home Depot.

By: WiggsBerry | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 15:25

on my iPod touch and it was FREE. Why do BB users have to pay for it?

By: jdoc77 | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 15:34

Yea..now if they could get that jiggly boob app to work we'd be in business1

By: perl_monk | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 15:42

I must say. That's pretty awesome.

By: soccerplayer | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 16:08

why do we have to pay for this? and the one for the ipod/iphone is free? doesn't make sense.

By: CrackleBerryMound | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 16:10

You're joking right?!

You're on the highway to losing sweet credibility amigo.

"Coolest app"??????

"Must have app"????????

"USEFUL"????????????????????????????

Jesus was a carpenter, and I don't even think that carpenter would entertain you with his generosity on this one.

What exactly would you use this app for? It's crap. Now if you advertised it as a bit of fun that shows off the accelerometer...

Your whole commenting on this app reeks of $$$$$. Not good.

By: Kevin Michaluk | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 20:23

Hey CrackleBerryMound,

Thanks for the comment. A little surprised to read it, but you're entitled to your opinion of course. But there's a few things I'll point out:

a) Read through the last few pages of blogs posts on this site. Heck, click on my name to this post and read through every blog post I've ever written (warning - could take a while). You'll notice a few those things...

- one, I'm an enthusiastic blogger and CrackBerry.com is a BlackBerry enthusiast site. I like to think of CrackBerry.com as the official fan club of BlackBerry and also like to think I'm one of RIM's biggest fans. I love the devices. They're my passion. That said, when I'm excited about something, I show it, be it about a new device, a new app, a new game, a new discovery (ie. symbols in BBM!) or anything else that gets me excited. It doesn't matter if it's something that's free or paid, something this site sells or doesn't sell, if I'm excited you can easily tell. Look at the Bolt browser post the other day - I was so excited about it I didn't even go to sleep that night! Sometimes I'm excited about things that aren't even related to BlackBerry (the competition) and but I'm honest and I'll express that too... I'm BB hardcore, but even I'm excited about the Palm Pre and blogged as such. When it comes to apps and games and themes, I don't put the "must have" label on everything I blog, but I'll use it when I think an app is of appeal when I personally like it and think it will be of appeal to people. I would never get excited and call an app a must have that I didn't personally think was. And you need to keep in mind its one person's opinion...mine. I don't expect everybody to agree with everything I post. In the case of not-free apps that we sell (akin to this post) let's think about a couple others that I initially blogged recently as must-haves:
* PeeKaWho: I was excited to blog about that app. It went on to be a Readers' Choice Cracky Award winner and a Mobihand Best Seller
* Nintaii: I was stoked to blog that game app, and again, it was a runner up to BBM for a Cracky and was named Best Game in the BlackBerry Developer Challenge a a few months back.

In the case of this app, I'm excited for a few reasons. One, it's the first "tool" that uses the Storm's accelerometer. Maybe if it was the 50th app to do so I wouldn't be as excited, but it's the first so I am. Two, it looks good! BB apps often don't look that hot (multiple reasons for that), but this one is clean and does. Three, for me personally, this is a must-have app. I don't own a "real" level, but now I do because of this app. I put it to use immediately in my basement with some gym equipment I have (that I swore was uneven) - that had me stoked. Three, I hope this the first of many good looking, fun/useful apps to come. People like these kinds of apps and the BB world has been lacking them. Plus, it was a Saturday morning and I wasn't expecting anything to be excited to blog about today, which made this exciting in itself. I think it's a pretty cool app. Don't like the word? That's ok..I never claimed to be a journalist, just a passionate CrackBerry addict. It's fine to disagree with my opinion on this app, but I won't be surprised if it becomes a top seller on Mobihand - I think a lot of Storm owners will be picking this up. You're right - it is a bit of fun that shows off the accelerometer and for Storm owners in this stage of the game that is something to be excited about! Would I rather it be cheaper or free? Heck yeah, but that doesn't lessen my excited-ness for this stuff. On that note, I do think we'll see BB apps get cheaper once that is launched.

- Conversely, when it comes to things I don't like, I still tend to write from an enthusiast standpoint. Again, read through all my blog posts and you'll find more than a few things I don't like and some pretty big rants. But I still am one to take the perspective of glass is half full vs. half empty.

- Lastly, when it comes to writing and credibility and integrity...I'm here for the long-haul. I wouldn't "pump" up something that I didn't personally think was good/liked unless I personally thought it was good. I have a motto - I'd never go for short-term gains at the expense of long-term credibility/profitability (I actually teach this to students when I do lectures on Entrepreneurship). And I practice what I preach.

Again, I appreciate the comment. I'll be sure to contain my excitement a little more in future, as again, I wouldn't want to come across in a manner that would be perceived as jeopardizing credibility. I'm just a passionate, excited BlackBerry Addict. Period!

Kevin, it's difficult to know how to reply to this as it seems the molehill of one reader’s views has suddenly grown into a mountain now verging on spewing into a volcano.

At no point in my comments did I question your enthusiasm, at all, or anything else you raised. What I did say, regarding your ‘wayward moral-compass’ in the reporting of this product, I stand by. In my opinion, I do believe this will tarnish your credibility with me when reporting on future products--and perhaps possibly others.

The above is just my opinion. And I trust I am entitled to express my opinion. I value the overwhelming majority of what you do and say, or else I wouldn’t be here on the site; but your response above, and by alerting me to it directly via e-mail, I find is, not an abuse, but still heavy-handed treatment simply because you do not like my comments. In retrospect, I admit that perhaps the wording of my original comment could have been better considered. I was immediately disappointed with your reporting and perhaps showed too much emotion with a knee-jerk response. I will continue to follow your good work --well, most of it :)

By: Kevin Michaluk | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 22:24

One of these days I'm seriously gonna take a course in concise writing :)

No worries on all this. As you can tell - CB is a passion for me as much as BB, and I just want to see all readers/addicts be happy!

If we're ever in the same city, drinks are on me! You can find me on Twitter @crackberrykevin

By: mike240se | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 23:34

kevin, i dont know why you even dignify that kind of comment with a reply. we all appreciate what your doing, and I for one thank you for your enthusiasm. I ask you don't dial it down at all, it makes me more excited about my device.

By: CrackleBerryMound | Date: Sun, 01/18/2009 - 01:57

Somehow this has managed to turn into one pretty funny thread. I'm still chuckling at some of the funny comments. I'm glad it turned out that way; it nicely sums up the site.

PS: I think Mike is a bit jealous you contacted me directly. Better add him to your Xmas card list :) (Just a joke Mike!)

By: CrackleBerryMound | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 16:15

I have to post again because I really am that disappointed with your off-base comments Kevin on this app.

It's making me question everything else you have stated on this site now.

By: mike240se | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 18:35

chill out man, kevin has done alot more for the BB community than you have.

He is not the developer, maybe he gets a few cents for every sale in his app store of this, big frigan deal, i doubt it was his motivation for writing this blog post. clearly he wrote it cause its a step in the right direction with more storm apps.

By: Back Stabbath | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 20:06

well if thats the case then it should be no problem for him to state that right? honesty is key when it comes to reviews in my opinion...

By: CrackleBerryMound | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 20:20

Your comment, Mike, is pretty dumb. Sounds more like ass-kissing if you read it. Another loss of credibility :)

By: ChuckH0308 | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 16:43

Update: I downloaded it and since my apartment is about as crooked as they come, I used a real bubble level to calibrate. As it turns out it was perfectly calibrated to begin with. While it's not something I will use everyday, there have been MANY times when I have wished I had my level with me, but didn't. And I ALWAYS have my phone with me. I checked the ruler on it too with a regular tape measure and it was dead on. Now, the only problem I have is that it's not really possible to set the Storm perfectly flat on anything since the sides are not perfectly straight and the buttons create a bit of inaccuracy (and my voice call kept prompting...lol). Still, if you need a level somewhere when you're on the go, this app will be very handy and accurate enough for most of what you would probably use it for. If you're doing something that's super critical you'll probably have a real level with you anyway. I don't know why some people have to complain so much. If you can't scrape up the whopping $5 for it or you think it sucks and you won't use it then don't buy it. No need to post multiple times how you think it sucks and you shouldn't have to pay $5 for it. Jeebus people are cheap!

By: Anonymous (not verified) | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 16:53

iPhone/iPod gets at least 2 free apps like this and we get a $5 one. i'm hoping this will change with time.

By: ChuckH0308 | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 08:55

Not all iPhone apps are free, nor do all Storm apps cost money. I'm sure there are apps for the Storm that are free, but cost money on an iPhone. Honestly, most of the apps for the iPhone are crap anyway. I don't get this attitude...the people who spend time developing these apps need to get paid. Wouldn't you like to get paid for all your work? If these apps are free on the iPhone it's likely because the company who provides them is charging for other apps and this is just a side thing. Costs $5 to get a crappy late from Starbucks that lasts 5 minutes, so I'd say this is a pretty good freakin deal! Is it really that big of a deal that this costs a measly $5?

By: BrianW2007 | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 17:43

Makes me think this site is more advertising for kevin's pocket book the way he talks about it. Five dolllars for an ap this much is not worth it IMO. We're off to a start, a slow one.. but still a start.

By: Back Stabbath | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 20:11

makes me think if i want digital apps i should just get an ipod touch and stick the literally 1000's of FREE apps from the app store on it. it would probably be much cheaper in the end. ive already ended up buying very crappy software based on reviews from this site and now ive actually erased them...thats a total waste.

By: Anonymous (not verified) | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 21:21

That's pathetic.

By: JeffSlay | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 12:25

Would be a cool app if it was free, or 99 cents. $5 is way too much for a gimmick app.

By: GpCaptMandrake | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 21:50

$5??? I mean it's neat... but come on...

By: Anonymous (not verified) | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 12:54

Software developers are people, too. They deserve to be paid.

If $5 will break your bank, you have one crappy bank.

By: artie | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 22:35

There must be a full moon tonight.

By: grayzweb | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 22:45

I just purchased this app. and think it is pretty cool. To me it is well worth it! I can't count how many times i went to hang a picture or something and had to go out to the garage to find a level.
Now I have it on me at all times :) The coolness factor alone is worth it in my opinion.

By: Marine One | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 23:12

Not only do I hate touchscreens but man this device seems to have attracted the biggest complainers and whiners from the four corners of the world.

What makes you people think you are ENTITLED to free stuff just because you bought a storm? If you feel like you were doing RIM a favor then return it and get something else, otherwise you got what you paid for, a great mobile device.

Anything more is gravy, not owed to you!

And to the troll accusing Kevin of trying to rip people off, nice try but it's not going to fly. Us regular members know what this site is about and it's about helping and support for BB users first, and yes, making a few dollars too. Kevin making some money is what provides us with this great site to hang out at, so you're barking up the wrong tree. Accusing a web forum owner/admin of trying to financially take advantage of it's members is the oldest, and now most over-used, internet troll tactic.

Nice try though.

By: Back Stabbath | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 23:41

your post is one giant whiny complaint.

By: skipo | Date: Sat, 01/17/2009 - 14:53

For $4.99 figured I would give it a shot. Works fine in horizontal mode but check the bottom or top of your Strom and you will see why it is totally useless in the vertical mode.

By: Philster9 | Date: Sun, 01/18/2009 - 01:17

haha thats great...i may even DL it!

By: cwoodffr | Date: Sun, 01/18/2009 - 08:00

use it on it side or vertically beside something. Any torpedo level you can get as a tool is the same, thats why the bubble vial can be used horizontally and vertically.

And for what its worth...I don't have a storm, but my kids both got ipod touches for xmas and have flushed $100 in apps they will use once down the toilet....cept over there you have to sift through 15000 apps for the minority that are any good.
