StarTracker announces major update to address orientation issues

By Alicia Erlich on 20 Jan 2014 12:19 pm EST

If you are searching for a tool to follow the stars and one that offers a completely unique experience for doing so, StarTracker is your go-to app for BlackBerry 10. We first saw it during BlackBerry's 25 Days of Gifts and then took a closer look not too long after. It offers a 3D map for you to view the sun, moon, planets, and thousands of stars with only your BlackBerry 10 handset. The recent update brings a change to the efficiency of application. It now utilizes True North instead of Magnetic North to increase the accuracy based on your location.

StarTracker allows you to explore the solar system by simply holding your BlackBerry up to the sky and seeing which constellations, objects, planets or stars are there in real time. It is like having your own star chart in your pocket. In terms of capabilities, operation is smooth, graphics are great, and it really does shows off all that your smartphone can do. Below is a list of all it brings to the platform.

  • Augmented Reality Star Gazing with gyroscope! Just hold up the device.
  • Sun, Moon, planets and 8000+ stars visible to the naked eyes.
  • 88 Constellations & 100+ deep sky objects with magnificent graphics.
  • All data is offline!
  • Search and Lock the objects in Solar system, 12 Zodiac Constellations, 88 Constellations, Deep Sky Objects and Famous Stars.
  • 3D compass in AR mode, indicate position of objects your searched.
  • Location auto set by GPS, or set manually.
  • Time Machine. Time and date can be adjusted smoothly.
  • Smooth motion flow and quick response which is realized by cutting edge signal processing technique.
  • Superb high quality graphic display by enabling the retina display of the device and the full screen anti-aliasing technology employment.

If you haven't already done so, StarTracker is the perfect application for all your stargazing needs. You can find it for BlackBerry 10 for $2.99, though there is a free version available to try out.

Should be interesting... I thought I always had a slightly wonky orientation, but just thought I was doing something wrong.

This app is seriously excellent. If you don't have it, do yourself a favor and get it. It's awesome and a great way to show off the phone to people who ask to see it! Great work dev! Thank you!

Definitely, I've had this before the giveaway, I usually use it in the summer on the late nights we have

I see you're on .1925. I could never get this app to work properly and suspected it may be because I'm on the same leaked OS.

Are you able to call up the menu?

It is a great app. Amazing!

A nice enhancement to a great app. I've been enjoying it for months! Recommended!

This is a must have if gazing up at the stars and planets and galaxies is your thing. Even for just the occasional use this is a great app.

Z10 In action here!

I've had this app for a long time, it's one of those apps that's a must have even if you don't have much interest in space/stars/planets etc... it's really well made and works great and is very cool... it would be on everyone's top ten app list.

Take care.

I bought this app as soon as I got my Z10, and I've re-installed it on my Z30. Absolutely stunning app. My son loves to use it outside, and you can see him mesmerized when he sees a planet in the sky, after finding it using this app. Absolutely wonderful app.

I love this app. Glad it will be more accurate now.

This one and ARkick are great AR apps! When I got this one my reaction was "Woh This is amazing"

Truly excellent app. My favourite on BB10.

What's the difference between the free and the paid version?

Hmmm... I updated, but North is still incorrect on my Z10 (STL100-4, VZW, I'll have to test it again once I get home.

This is a great app...

Worth it, worth it, worth it. I love this beautiful app.

I agree this is even for the casual user that wants to show off their BB10 device.
I am not sure, but it looks like it is incorporating the infrared data housed on the Stanford servers that was shot by the WYSE telescope from Utah State. Really adds to the coolness.
Thanks to the dev for staying invested in this cool app!

What i'm missing in this App is to have information about those planets. For example if I click on Pluto I want information (distance, size, age, whatever) That would be huge, maybe in future updates :)

Pluto is no longer listed as a planet.

Orientation "issue" they never had any it was total randomness. Just Flashy colours if you ask me

Great app. Bought it before the Christmas giveaway. Beautiful time pass with kids before the drive in movie starts (in summer).

One of the first apps that I bought. Been a useful, informative and fun resource for anyone interested in the night sky.

Note, some users have complained about not seeing the right objects in view. In order to see the correct view of the stars you must either give the app approval for location information or use the manual input to provide your location.
