The BlackBerry App Roundup
By James Falconer on 13 Feb 2009 10:33 am EST

With the 9300 rumors and details floating around these days, I thought I'd do a special roundup this week for what will be the 9300's younger (eermmm...I guess that would be older!) brother... The BlackBerry 8900. Yes, I know there's no 3G, but there's something about this Berry I just love. If you own an 8900, this roundup covers the best selling apps for the BlackBerry 8900. Time to show some love for the 8900 with Valentine's Day coming up on us tomorrow. Enjoy.

Best Selling BlackBerry 8900 Apps: Aerize Email Alerts, VibAndRing, Fart Machine, Solitaire Buddy Gold, PeeKaWho Email SMS Alerts, AutoStandby, Empower Work Folders, Marble Trap, QuickText, Nintaii

Best Selling BlackBerry 8900 Apps

Aerize Email AlertsAerize Email Alerts

Aerize Email Alerts allows you to preview each incoming email with the senders picture and name, the subject of the email and a brief preview. Very handy. When new messages arrive, you'll get a popup window notification no matter what application you happen to be in. Never miss an important email again with Aerize Email Alerts!

VibAndRing is a simple app that lets you set the ringtone alert and vibration alert at the same time. You can also set how long the vibration alert should last. If you've ever missed a call because your ringtone only sounds after the vibrations have finished... You might want to give this one a try. There are a few different apps like VibAndRing out there now, but apparently VibAndRing keeps selling the best. That must say something about the app.

Fart MachineFart Machine

Ugh, another fart app. I was hesitant to include it, but heck, it IS a best seller! A simple joke/prank app, Fart Machine comes with 12 fart sounds. You can have it produce a 'random fart', 'fart now', or generate a fart in 30 seconds or 1 minute. You might say you could 'set it and forget it'... Set the timer, leave it on a friends or colleagues desk, and wait for hilarity to ensue. Good clean fun. I think.

Solitaire Buddy GoldSolitaire Buddy Gold

Solitaire fans rejoice! Solitaire Buddy Gold is the ultimate collection of 13 of the most popular solitaire games for the BlackBerry. There's tons of features built-in, including unlimited undo/redo, game tracking, on-device help, custom card sizes, design and background color... and a lot more. Solitaire Buddy Gold automatically saves your game when you exit, so you can pick up right where you left off next time you play.

PeeKaWho Email SMS AlertsPeeKaWho Email SMS Alerts

Voted the 2008 Best Utility App by CrackBerry, PeeKaWho Email SMS Alerts is another email and SMS notifier software. Like Aerize, it allows you to see who is emailing you with a brief preview no matter what you happen to be doing on your Berry. PeeKaWho is packed full of features... it even comes with a spam blocker which allows you to create a whitelist and blacklist to help filter emails as you wish.

AutoStandby is a simple little app that lets you automatically put your Berry into standby mode after going idle for a set period of time. The benefit of this? Save a ton of battery life! Standby mode will not only save your battery, but while in standby you'll still receive emails, SMS messages, calls, etc... Just as if you your Berry was on as normal. The app will also lock your keypad to prevent unwanted button presses. If you go through battery power like mad, you might want to give AutoStandby a look.

Empower Work FoldersEmpower Work Folders

Empower Work Folders allows you to separate your BES emails from your BIS emails, SMS, PIN messages, etc... This app makes it insanely easy to separate work emails from personal emails. With one click, you're shown only your BES messages! No more searching through that cluttered mailbox looking for that personal or work related message. Empower Work Folders makes organizing your work and personal correspondence easy. It integrates seamlessly with your Berry's mail app, and runs fully on your device. No setup is required at all.

Marble TrapMarble Trap

Marble Trap is a simple, yet extremely puzzling game. The object is to roll your marble through the maze, escaping traps and more. Deposit your marble into the hole, and you pass the level! There's 64 levels in the game and is extremely easy to play. If you're looking for a challenging yet fun puzzle game to keep you occupied during those breaks or idle moments, give Marble Trap a try.

QuickText is simply like having a speed dial for your text messaging needs. Once installed, you can access QuickText by hitting the 'Q' key, set it to open with a convenience key, or the old fashioned way by clicking the QuickText icon :P You can assign contacts to any character on your keypad including letters, numbers or symbols. Lets say you wanted to message me real quick. First, assign me to your QuickText list for the letter 'J'. Then, press 'Q' for QuickText, and 'J' for me... that's it!

Nintaii is one of my favorite games for the BlackBerry to date. Like Marble Trap, Nintaii is a puzzle game that will get you thinking for hours and hours. Tumble your block through each course, and deposit it into the hole at the end of the level. Avoid hazards, activate switches and more to make your way successfully through the 100 unique levels. Controls are extremely easy, and it's tons of fun. Get your thinking cap on for this one.

BlackBerry 8900 App Roundup for Friday the 13th, 2009!

I know the Storm vs. iPhone debate is old, and I like my Storm, but geez, there isn't crap available for the Storm compared to the iPhone, or compared to other BBs for that matter. 90 percent of the software out there doesn't work properly on the Storm, and the stuff that does is really expensive when you consider that it's just on the phone for killing time here and there.

To be honest, I'm thinking the whole "smartphone" thing is just way overrated, they don't seem all that smart, unless you've got unlimited funds to make it something worth getting excited about.

Personally I'm not a fan of these model specific software round ups...maybe because I have a Bold so there aren't any for it since it's been out for a while...but I do always look forward to new apps come friday.

Good roundup! One question though.... Regarding the Empower Work Folders app: On the Bold, you can seperate BES and Personal emails without any extra apps. Is this not possible with the 8900? Maybe I am missing something...

When I go to DL the free trail it says my 8900(curve) is not compatble..... Seeing that this is the BB 8900 Roundup, I find that frustrating. Any insight anyone?

Signs are good when we see these popular titles working on the 8900. I've purchased at least one and I'm currently trying one more out right now.

I know this is just an 8900 review, but in going over to the app store, Marble Trap says "For ALL blackberries with a trackball", but then says it is not compatible with the 8830. That's kind of a contradiction, isn't it? I'm sure my 8830 has a trackball....

The article says Empower is compatible but in the store it says it is not compatible?

Also, on the Empower website,it says its compatible up to OS 4.5 (with some bugs).

My 8900 has OS 4.6.

Can anyone confirm if Empower is compatible with my 8900?

I am new to this site...I had been trying to figure out if I was gonna bail and headover to the Iphone mania that is going on, but after thinking about it I love your site and I got myself a Blackberry it..a whole lot better than my clam shell, but my buddy went the Iphone way..and boy does he brag...I mean the browser is smoother, faster, and some of the applications are increadible, the translators, medical software...(I am a doctor) and just the fluid motion of the screen are amazing...totally depressing...but I know that this is still a new device and have faith in it...when do you think us Blackberry users can hold our devices up and show some cool features that make the even average new Iphone user think twice about what they got...I am sticking with my berry but wish they would get there...and was just wondering when we will get there.....hope it's soon...cause I am begining to get sick of this Iphone thing...but I know I know...trying to be patient..but right now in front of an Storm does not even come close...not even close....oh well...sure it will happen soon..
