Social Beat App Being Pushed to Verizon Users
Verizon's Social Beat app seems to be popping up unwillingly on some devices. It looks like the social networking tool from iskoot is being pushed out by Big Red for users to download. Social Beat has been available for quite some time, and allows you to view all of your social networks and news feeds in one handy app. You can check out Faceobook, Myspace, Gmail, Twitter, Google Talk and a bunch of sports, news and entertainment sites. Its a great way to have everything all in one spot, but the app still needs a bit of polish around the edges. Social Beat is 100% free, but looks to only be available (still) for Verizon Customers. For more information, or if you are a Verizon customer looking to download, head over to iskoot.com/products/social-beat.

I've had this showing up since midnight or so. I redownloaded opera mini on my storm and thought it was something that came with it. Oh well, not the first time big red does this to us.

Verizon, stop pushing stuff to me I have not asked for. I know I can hide the damn icon, but at least you should give me the option to delete it totally.
I am sick and tired of getting stuff shoved down my throat.
Now that I have said this, is this app any good? I just use twitter, yahoo messenger and that's basically it.
I wonder, if you click on the icon to install the app fully, and then uninstall, will it be fully removed? Will it try to repush? Does the install icon stay no matter what?
deenug666 Mar 3, 2010 at 10:33 am
I installed and deleted, but the icon is still there to reload.
PurNrG Mar 3, 2010 at 9:39 am
I understand apps like "My Verizon", but everything else is just added clutter that I have to hide...
cbacon Mar 3, 2010 at 9:40 am
I downloaded it and checked it out. Overall though, I wasnt impressed. While I certainly wouldnt mind a replacement for my facebook app right now (which has been extremely tempormental lately) it still couldnt do message or calendar integration. And the twitter section looked like a joke compared to UberTwitter. And I also think i'll continue to use Viigo for RSS feeds. I really think these "all-in-one" apps need to stop. They never do as well as the dedicated ones do. I guess for people who don't know any better...
newsome Mar 3, 2010 at 9:58 am
Don't say "for people who don't know any better..." I would prefer one app for several things as opposed to a Twitter app, the bloated RIM Facebook app, and a Gchat app (the 3 things I use). I prefer one that's smaller in size and resource usage than the other 3 combined, even if I have a few less features.
rion_j Mar 3, 2010 at 10:29 am
you should check out SocialScope. Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, and Foursquare all in 1 app.
newsome Mar 3, 2010 at 10:37 am
"...check out SocialScope..." That's a joke, right?
suillira#cb Mar 3, 2010 at 11:27 am
I "signed" up 3 months ago, no response. I guess I'm not a cool kid.....
picher437 Mar 3, 2010 at 4:32 pm
SocialScope is great...but getting an invite takes FOREVER! I signed up and didn't get the invite for probably 4 or 5 months later. Just keep waiting, it's worth it!
colt452 Mar 3, 2010 at 10:04 am
Idk y but I always seem to get these pushes later than the rest but that's not always a bad thing :) I guess we will see how it goes when it gets here (to me)

tarotmusic Mar 3, 2010 at 10:06 am
I know I had it pushed to me this morning and signed up to test it out. On the RSS feed, it lists Channels - News, Politics, Technology, etc.
It's obvious which political party the developers are prone to. On the news front, I have CBS, CNN, The New York Slimes, Reuters, Washington Compost, etc.
On the Politics channel I have Yahoo Politics, Salon, The Huffington Post and Daily Kos.
What kind of shit is this?
mrscott45 Mar 3, 2010 at 11:39 am
Cleared
mrscott45 Mar 3, 2010 at 11:36 am
A fellow Mark Levin listener. Sounds like the app contains allot of indoctrinating content.

Good ear...MrsScott!

Instead of forcing useless crap like this down out throats why don't they try an Operating System instead????? Hello Verizon???????
mjbesen310 Mar 3, 2010 at 10:23 am
I love how people cry like babies whenever they get something for FREE!
get a life people and stop crying about free apps that do not take any space up unless downloaded....
tarotmusic Mar 3, 2010 at 10:38 am
I bet you are for 'free' healthcare too aren't you? Don't complain about it if it's free.. People don't want this tripe pushed to their phones.
rj160202 Mar 3, 2010 at 10:54 am
If I want a program on my phone, i will install it. I have to hide half the icons since i dont use them and it gets extremely annoying. If they push it, it should be able to be deleted.
newsome Mar 3, 2010 at 11:12 am
I would *disagree* that they should stop pushing stuff. I would never know about this program if they hadn't pushed the icon. I would *agree* though that, if they push it, I should be able to delete it. I know I can hide it, but when I try a new theme, everything I've hidden is visible again. The list of things that they've pushed that I don't use and have to hide is getting EXTENSIVE - Slacker, VZW Navigator, My Verizon, Bing, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, AIM, Flickr, MySpace... and that doesn't include Facebook & Gchat that I DO use.
WyckedAnkh Mar 3, 2010 at 10:28 am
The fb portion of it is nice, it doesn't seem as cluttered as RIM's fb app but there is no integration and you can't view someone's profile. You can message them, poke them, and write on their wall but that's it. I can't see what someone might have posted on their wall and all. You also can't post pics from it either. I deleted it (though it still shows up) but some people might prefer it...
TwistedLIE Mar 3, 2010 at 10:41 am
It was to buggy for me to keep... scrolling had a wild jumping effect and would slow my phone down... maybe later but right now I will stick to what we know works
ba_hamilton Mar 3, 2010 at 10:47 am
Another app that I get to move to my special folder and then hide away to be forgotten.
arwaldon4 Mar 3, 2010 at 11:06 am
I'm using it now and it isn't sooo bad. Its a bit better then rims fb app cause I second the notion on its temporment as of late. But I'm trying it out an its cool. Not better then ubertwitter, but nothing is perfect!
djrollerx Mar 3, 2010 at 12:05 pm
I set up the app and started using it, I kinda like it, but it needs more flexibility. Both the Twitter and the Facebook parts don't have full functionality, just bascailly allowing you to view statuses and tweets. Its a good basic app, but it needs more options if I'm going to use it more often.
rizzzzoooo Mar 3, 2010 at 12:29 pm
seems like a good app( at least the idea) but hate when carriers push content to my phone. I figure if it's a good product the I will take the initiative to go get it. I prefer take out and not home delivery of my apps...thank you very much.

sushilover63 Mar 3, 2010 at 12:44 pm
I guess since Verizon is facing out their Curve 8330's this App is not compatible with my model.
myth90045 Mar 3, 2010 at 1:01 pm
Glad it doesnt support the S2...I dont care for this nor for that stupid Bing app. Bring back google damnit!!
blanco112 Mar 3, 2010 at 1:23 pm
So I clicked on the Icon that was pushed to me and was sent to a download page and during the install my phone started a reboot, which I thought was strange because it didn't ask. Now I have a bricked phone. Thanks for the wonderful App!
PartyGurle Mar 3, 2010 at 4:35 pm
Yep, did the same thing to my Tour...I'm really getting sick of Verizon pushing stuff to my phone that bricks it. I'm really sick of having to restore my phone. Pissed me off. It's getting to the point where I'm ready to leave Verizon and the blackberry and move on to something else.
baykine Mar 3, 2010 at 3:15 pm
I just dl'd the app. I don't think the app is that bad. I might even keep it on my phone. Just have to wait and see what it does to my battery life and app memory for a day before I can make my decision. IMO...people should at least try the app. You never know, you might like it.
mystro2b Mar 3, 2010 at 3:21 pm
I don't have the gmail icon on my version of Social Beat on my Storm...anybody else missing this icon? I would like that...
Mojave Mar 3, 2010 at 3:52 pm
Verizon.....STOP pushing apps!! I'm tired of all the crap that Verizon is pushing onto my Curve. At least give us the option to accept or deny any apps you are pushing. I don't care if you can hide it......I'm sick of all this crap that is forced onto our phones from Verizon!!
storm83 Mar 3, 2010 at 6:36 pm
I don't see this at all. I rebooted about 3 times today
geocab Mar 3, 2010 at 6:58 pm
I clicked on it to check it out and now my phone is showing the 552 Error. Damnit Verizon!
andriakaye Mar 3, 2010 at 8:21 pm
Overall, I think the app would be fine for very light users of these programs, but for anyone who uses them in depth, the app is clearly lacking.
BerryElle09 Mar 3, 2010 at 8:24 pm
OMG! I thought I was losing my mind, I was like, where the heck this icon come from & what is it smdh...I know I didn't downl;oad anything, I would have at least like a warning via txt or email..
Sebastianraven Mar 4, 2010 at 9:32 am
I read the article and poof... its on my phone.
jimbl Mar 4, 2010 at 3:05 pm
I'm with Verizon and it hasn't been pushed to my phone, and I just did a battery pull last night. Maybe it isn't being pushed to everyone?
jbeaul Mar 4, 2010 at 11:32 pm
After installing the app (sooooo easy) I decided to delete the FB app and Ubertwitter. So far so good. Less stuff = good thing.
otterpop Mar 5, 2010 at 2:44 am
I detest all this "social networking" garbage. I want a way to get rid of twitter, facebook, myspace, and this crap too.
I don't want it anywhere near my phone. I'm already paying high rates for my service, why should I be subjected to something that i HATE with a passion being irremovable from my phone?
If they are going to keep this up, I need them to subsidize my service. They can force me to have this crap on my phone if I get $10/mo for my entire phone plan. Sounds fair to me.
germann1 Mar 5, 2010 at 10:54 am
I downloaded it, tried it. It's very limited and it clogs the memory. I deleted it. Not a good app to use in my book.
alrik359 Mar 5, 2010 at 7:31 pm
Yea I also tried it. I just use Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. I was excited to see an app that I could follow all of these with one app to save memory, but I didn't like it. It stalls a lot and you can't do as much as you can on the dedicated ones. I'll continue to use the ones dedicated for Facebook and MySpace, and UberTwitter for Twitter untill TweetDeck makes their App available the BlackBerry. For right now the icon is on the hidden status, so I dont have to look at it anymore. Wish I could delete the icon as well, but its one of the Big Red things they think we want.
droidnewbie2011 Mar 7, 2010 at 9:52 pm
Why does Big Red pushes out an app that really is no use to me? Keep in mind my fellow crackberry users, I am by no means bitching about it, I am just kind of curious why this app is pushed to my Tour, first Bing now this?
wetherb67 Mar 8, 2010 at 12:59 pm
It's just a DOWNLOAD LINK.
If you don't want the app then hide the icon and don't download it! Or if it won't stay hidden just don't look in your applications folder.
If that's too hard for you then I'm sorry you have something so important to cry about.
nfaiola Mar 18, 2010 at 11:38 am
So if a "DOWNLOAD LINK" is placed onto your phone without your consent and cannot be removed, it is Verizon being helpful...
But if a "DOWNLOAD LINK" is placed onto your desktop without your consent and cannot be removed, we call that MALWARE.
Jude526 Mar 15, 2010 at 4:37 pm
If I want an app I will download it. I don't like an icon being sent to my BB without my knowing it. I want to choose what I want. I am not crying, just making a statement.
kudinurse Mar 28, 2010 at 1:08 am
I've tried to use this for the past two days, and I've noticed the jumpy effect when moving between site icons @ top, and it's slow to refresh--but has anyone else noticed it changes the LED light? Flashes like a pale light blue when there's new activity? And wipes out the usual green & red?
No thanks, Verizon. Deleted.
oldnut5 May 5, 2010 at 2:52 pm
I downloaded this app to see if it really works but its junk. On my BlackBerry Storm its so hard to scroll up and down. The feeds/facebook updates take a long time to load too.
b3walker Oct 31, 2010 at 9:40 pm
want to the full facebook application instead but it isn't available after social beat is installed.
