Sneek Peak At The New BlackBerry Messenger!

One of the greatest functions of BlackBerry devices is BlackBerry messenger. Sadly though over the years BlackBerry Messenger has seen little to no changes in it's looks or functionality since it's incarnation. That is, until now.
The Boy Genius has posted some nice images of the as of yet unreleased BlackBerry Messenger and I have to say it looks great especially with some of the new features implemented, the list while not complete looks awesome and I can't wait to see it in action. New features include:
- Avatar support — set your own avatar using the Camera or saved photo on your device (this is displayed locally as well as shown next to your Messenger name on your friend’s buddy list)
- GPS location integration — you can now set permissions so friends can always see your location, have to request it each time, or never can see it
- Proximity sensor — we’re guessing this will let you know if you’re within a certain distance of friends (pending, of course, you’re both set to share locations freely with each other)
- Set conversation subjects — this will allow you to organize your convos on the main Messenger screen and label them with subjects to keep track of all your conversations
- Homescreen support — you can pin/sticky actual Messenger contacts directly to the homescreen for easy access!
Some nice additions there that I can't wait to see released, be sure to head on over to Boy Genius Report where there is a whole gallery of pictures for you all too drool over in anticipation of it's release. Side note, those of you running 5.0 now, this is the reason your BBM shows an install of 4.7 currently as this version is still in beta.

I was wondering if they were going to make any changes to BBM. I must say, this is a great addition to an already great app. Can't wait for the release.

Cannot Wait ! I want it now !
Bellerophon Jun 12, 2009 at 9:53 pm
Woah, wait. In the 5th screenshot down on BGR, you can see a box that says "Recent SMS Contacts (0)". And the boxes above that, for the current convos and contacts, there's the blackberry symbol right-aligned next to each name. This is leading me to believe (more hope and pray than actually believe, really) that this version of BBM will incorporate multiple messaging avenues. And thus FINALLY give us threaded Texting/MMS-ing!!! Because there's no other real reason for those Blackberry symbols than to distinguish what type of contact/convo each entry is(other than if that's the standard avatar in the new version, in which case I'm pulling at straws here). In any case, that "Recent SMS Contacts (0)" still is VERY interesting to me.
Feel free to speculate, call me crazy, or whatever. Just calling it like I see it.

I didn't even think of it when I saw that but I think that may make sense.
Enraged Medic Jun 13, 2009 at 1:15 am
thinking the same thing when I saw the BGR pics. I can only hope RIM got their $h*t together and implement threaded convo's. Pleeeeease let it be :)

On my screen at least, it looks like the BB icon has slightly more white background than the contacts menu background. Looks like an avatar placeholder to me.
irishmac53 Jun 12, 2009 at 10:06 pm
4.5 please!!!
Iceman Jun 12, 2009 at 10:38 pm
I like the addition with some of the new features. It looks really nice and I can't wait to see it up close & personal...
johnnymac Jun 12, 2009 at 10:50 pm
OK this is a pet peeve of mine. Only use 'it's' when the word should be a contraction of 'it is'.
For example - in this part of the review:
..."seen little to no changes in it's looks or functionality since it's incarnation."
Both those are incorrect. Should be 'changes in its looks...since its incarnation'. No apostrophe there.
Sorry.

Sorry

Thanks - made me laugh.

the best thing since sliced bread... all they have to do now is release at mid-night..
SteveO86 Jun 12, 2009 at 11:02 pm
Some cool features.
Can't wait! I hope they support more file types for file transfers!
CeoStatus0 Jun 12, 2009 at 11:53 pm
its time for a change
Stang68 Jun 13, 2009 at 12:03 am
The Onyx looks uglier every time I see it. It looks like the keys are about to fall off the edge!
Enraged Medic Jun 13, 2009 at 1:12 am
smoking something heavy. Crack perhaps?
Stang68 Jun 13, 2009 at 9:55 am
I just think the Tour is a nicer looking device. The Onyx is ugly, frankly. And it is way too small.
houstonn Jun 13, 2009 at 1:14 am
which bb is that?
SAVJR Jun 13, 2009 at 1:54 am
Really...
tpony Jun 13, 2009 at 2:21 am
This is such great news. I'm so excited to see this come out. BBM is one of the greatest apps and I love that is's getting some changes done to it. :O)
leroypinto123 Jun 13, 2009 at 2:42 am
The name/details of a single contact take up half the screen! whats up with that? Regardless, nice upgrade.
zkyevolved Jun 13, 2009 at 3:38 am
Cool! When will someone leak this JAD file :D I wanna install it! hehehehe.
KBV1 Jun 13, 2009 at 6:16 am
Looks awesome.. cant wait for this. Some great features have been added =oD
FireWarrior Jun 13, 2009 at 9:26 am
is that phone the onyx thought that one had a black bezel
djjackm Jun 13, 2009 at 9:49 am
I am hoping I will be able to get it on my 8320. I am going to eventually move to the 8900, but the friends I have with it keep having cracking around the trackball and I would end up losing my mind.
Just hoping they show support to users on 4.5!
oh, and I know it is very teenager'esque but more emoticons. Every other chat/im program has a slew of them.
ilovehtcsense Jun 13, 2009 at 10:30 am
The Onyx is beautiful. I'm so sick of people that are on CDMA networks trashing it because this has Wi-Fi unlike the Tour and their just jealous cause VZW won't be picking it up because it's only GSM. Both phones are nice, i'm sick of hearing this stupid crap.
The Onyx IMO, is going to be the best blackberry to date when it's released. There is not one feature missing.
Stang68 Jun 13, 2009 at 11:50 am
It looks like RIM just threw a bunch of stuff together to make the Onyx. It looks like the top half and the bottom half dont even belong together. There are gaps everywhere and the keys look like they are about to spill over.
xxxxpradaxxxx Jun 13, 2009 at 11:36 am
That blackberry is ugly. It reminds me of a VHS tape.
Sirhill Jun 13, 2009 at 11:43 am
I am so loving this. To bad my wife had to tell me about this. Now I feel like putting my head in the sand for a long time. She never is on top of any new bb news unless i tell her, but not this time. Oh well i want this and can not wait. lets just hope that rim put this out soon or with 5.0 will be even better.
robotaholic Jun 13, 2009 at 1:44 pm
WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT
karyney Jun 13, 2009 at 2:38 pm
I can only hope and pray that this will be compatible with 4.5 and my lowly 8310.
mscalero Jun 13, 2009 at 2:46 pm
This looks really cool. BBMessenger is indeed one of the best features of Berrys. I wonder if they will also add additional options for "Send File" in BB Messenger. I notice whenever I try to send anything to another contact, I can only send a photo or voice note. It would be cool if you could send any file at all.
Shay D. Life Jun 13, 2009 at 3:03 pm
I hate when stuff like this happens. You hear about an update, add-on, app, etc...and then you have to wait an addition 4 to 5 months for a release.
BBpixie Jun 13, 2009 at 3:29 pm
yesss.. I agree on this! I don't have patience with anything - I get what I want/need, so the waiting kills me every time!
SteveO86 Jun 13, 2009 at 5:07 pm
I like the option to set your status... beats the normal available anytime/anything we got know haha. Hopefully it will integrate with the calendar.
shawtytite334 Jun 13, 2009 at 7:39 pm
I can't wait to try this bbm
rallanr Jun 13, 2009 at 8:52 pm
What I'd like to see is a message time indicator so you can easily tell when a message was sent to you.
laurenchantel Jun 13, 2009 at 11:36 pm
bbm already does that
JerzieBarbie Jun 14, 2009 at 12:10 pm
Anyone know when. I want it like yesterday
snowthedirtbub Jun 14, 2009 at 5:18 pm
all these cool things you can do with a GPS....to bad they don't work. I got mine to work, but my friends are not that technologically inclined...
th3gh05t Jun 14, 2009 at 6:37 pm
Where can we download this?
jkipper Jun 15, 2009 at 12:57 am
Looks great! Can't wait to load it up. I have only one question. With the new ability to add Home screen support, this means that the blackberry must notify you in 3 places that you have a new message. Pin Sticky, Blackberry Messenger application, and if applicable, the message list. Will this create much more lag? As it is, My blackberry lags sometimes and requires a little bit of sweet talking or a battery pull. Any input?
ROCHiiDMOB Jul 18, 2009 at 11:54 am
I downloaded the new BBM 5.0 its great but im still running on 4.6 on my BB 8900 .. is that ok? and i thought there would be threaded sms i was waiting for that (: ..and also when will we be able to upgrade our 8900 to 5.0
tdevil184 Oct 6, 2009 at 8:05 pm
will it show as an update automatically on the phone? the app world?
