SMS Backup on sale for $.99 until the end of the month

By Alicia Erlich on 19 May 2014 04:21 pm EDT

This week marks the launch of the BlackBerry Z3 in Indonesia. As such many popular applications are being placed on sale to mark the occasion for only Z3 devices. SMS Backup is one of them and for those of you in that region it is available as a free download but only on that device. However, the rest of us can enjoy the application as the developer has placed it on sale for 50% making it only $.99 to purchase.

  • Backup text messages (SMS) to an open XML format
  • Backup media content from MMS
  • Checks for duplicates on import
  • Clear all your text messages (Safely remove all text messages)
  • Export text messages to a CSV file that you can view, sort and print in a spreadsheet application such as Excel
  • Supports all versions of BlackBerry OS 10

From now until the end of month, you can take advantage of the sale price. If you are not familiar with SMS Backup, it offers a quick way to backup and restore your SMS and MMS messages.

SMS Backup on sale for $.99 until the end of the month

I'm wondering, the difference between backing up your data naturally through blackberry link, which would back up your SMS and be able to retrieve this.

How does this differ from this app?

I wish "BlackBerry Backup Extractor" (by Reincubate Ltd.) would work with BB10 backups as well.

Works great with older devices. They hope to bring out BB10 support soon. Anyone who finds out first when it's out, please let the CB community know ASAP!

Let's you extract just about anything, SMS/TXT, Calls, MMS, BBM, Emails, Calendar, Photos, Videos, AppData, Memos, Bookmarks, Tasks, Ringtones etc.

A dream if BB10 and a solution to our problems if it was supported already...

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

Since IIRC the Link backups are encrypted in a rather bulletproof way and I doubt that they will document exactly how that is done (because it creates a security vulnerability that has been exploited in the past), not to mention I'd bet data is stored in it in a very different way (from a completely different platform written by completely different people) I'd be surprised if that BBOS tool would have the ability to read those backups itself.

You realize the latest version of Link, in combination with recent OS 10.2.1 versions as well as 10.3.0, now has a granular backup/restore feature?

How granular? I only saw a "quick backup" option now. I didn't see one for selective backups like BlackBerry Desktop Manager did.

This app will extract data on the phone. Then you can copy to PC, cloud or elsewhere.

If your phone is wiped, you're lucky if you have a recent Link backup, but need to restore to the phone first to be able to extract SMS using this app.

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

Link does not have the ability to restore just SMS/MMS data alone. It can only restore all data (in terms of email, sms/mms, and etc) in one shot.

I use this and it's pretty good, but it doesn't have the ability to relink all the MMS pictures or other data that would've been saved on the local storage on the device after a wipe, which makes sense.

Thank god the first guy didn't post, and no I'm not trying to be first, I'm aware someone has already posted!

Yes it does merge. I have had this app since Nov 2013 through three device changes...this app is damn good

CrackBerrians: We stay on our Z's & Q's

I do support in the BlackBerry Support Forums and there have been many times when this app could have saved some users a lot of grief. I'll probably be recommending this one.

Cheers. :)

Great to support devs and get useful apps, but hey, we've been asking for selective backup in BB Link for a while now.

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

Sorry Prem, I should have read your post first before posting my comment at the top....

Same minds think alike ish.....

I have posted above in reply, about BlackBerry Backup Extractor on Windows / PC, which would allow to do you exactly what its name says. Unfortunately still working on BB10 support.

This SMS backup app described in this article is just that: extract on the phone itself and then copy the extracted data to PC for further "exploitation".

I keep an eye out for BB Backup Extractor, and let CB community know when it's BB10 ready...

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

See my comment above. New versions of Link combined with latest device OS can do selective backup/restore.

Not as granular as the DM backups yet but a big step.

Thanks, I will check again. Although I checked yesterday, the granularity did not go beyond AppData, Settings and Media, that's what we've seen already.

The option "Custom Backup" is now hidden away a bit, it opens another menu with options.

Did I miss anything?

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

You have to use it in conjunction with a VERY recent OS build on the device. and above are known to work. is known to work. is known to NOT work.

Those are the only ones I'm sure about.

Purchased this - thanks for the sale! I look forward to being able to backup & restore SMS without using Link.

Cracked my z10 screen, used BB link to backup and change to new z10. All texts bbm's and other data was there. Is this not the best way to go?

Great to hear everything worked for you and all the things important to you did restore.

People want more options, and more selective backups and restore. That's why this app can come in handy, if you would just like to extract SMS, instead of restoring the whole phone.

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

I get a lot of SMS and MMS messages every day but don't back up with Link every day. This app lets you back up SMS/MMS on the fly wherever you are. Paid full price at $1.99 and felt it was worth it. If you have been thinking about this, $.99 is a great value.

Great - like being able to export business SMS for record/file and then unclutter device.

does this app clear your text messages when you back up? It mentions " clear safely" and I don't want to delete any conversations.

When your data port on the handset breaks and BlackBerry Link won't do wifi backups, the only way to move SMS across to your new BB10 is with this app. It worked for me including merging the messages back after upgrading the OS to beta (it had issues for me with stable 2 months ago). Great app.
