Skyfire For BlackBerry Relaunches Alpha Testing – Latest Version 3.5

SkyFire has resumed its testing of their Alpha version on BlackBerry devices after being forced to place things on hold due to some leakage of previous versions. At this time, SkyFire has sent out to its testers Alpha 3.5 Build 1.0.0.12799. Some stuff was added such as downloading files to your device from within SkyFire and some stuff was removed, such as streaming media for now until SkyFire can optimize it better. Overall, it's still slow and clearly Alpha but hey, it's getting there. Full release notes after the jump.

“We are coming back with a new iteration for the Blackberry Alpha."

As you are aware we temporarily closed the Blackberry Alpha. We planned for a certain number of users on our Alpha system that was quickly exceeded with the leak of the client outside the Alpha community. Please stick to the understanding of the Alpha program and NDA – it is NOT for open distribution. It just creates hassle for all people involved and spoils the experience for our Alpha participants.

This Alpha 3.5 is still targeted for Blackberry Bold mainly firmware 4.6.0.167 and 4.6.0.247 devices. , Feel free to try out the build as well on Blackberry 8900 and 5.0.xx firmware versions of Bold.

The version of Alpha 3.5 is 1.0.0.12799.

What got removed in Alpha 3.5 (vs. Alpha 3.1)?

  • Stream Mode: We are actively working on an alternate method to provide streaming for Blackberry that will provide better performance and reduces the number of errors during streaming. This work has not been concluded yet. In the meantime we removed the existing stream mode. Stay tuned!

Thus please focus feedback for Alpha 3.5 on page load experience and basic browsing vs. the media experience.

What’s new in Alpha 3.5

  • Inline Text Entry: You can now edit/enter form elements directly within the page, without being interrupted by a dialog box. Makes it more direct, convenient and retains the context.
  • Click-to Call: The Blackberry client now will utilize tags in websites that trigger a phone call, when clicked (e.g. callto: and tel: links). You have to confirm before the call is initiated.
  • Set as Default Browser: when set, links will open Skyfire
  • Downloading of Files: you can now invoke the download of files to your device.
  • Improved Scrolling: Further tweaking since the last Alpha.
  • Reduced Checkerboard occurrences
  • Alpha limit: We implemented a simple mechanism to limit the number of new users in our system. Once reached you see a message. If you encounter this and are part of this Alpha group then please contact us.

Known bugs in this Alpha

  • Clear cookies: When you clear cookies in advanced settings it will not work. Will be addressed in the next release.
  • Inline Text: We are seeing several issues.
  • Sometimes old text is visible (Issue 331 & 409), when re-entering text box, the cursor is positioned at the beginning of the text field (Issue 333).
  • Download: timeout when downloading large files (Issue 435)”

awesome.

ps to the poster above. you can not download it. It is in alpha and we already have seen what happens when it gets leaked. The longer we wait, the better

Before I switched from a WinMo phone to a Blackberry, this was my browser of choice. Nice to see development resume, but I'd rather see the integrated browser optimized a bit, IMHO.

How can I become a beta tester, I was a user of the winmo phone and loved this broswer now I have a BlackBerry 8900 I would love to jump back in on it any one now how.

Let skyfire continue its work. I don't wanna hear about another leak that stops production. I thought that was a B.S excuse by skyfire but whatever to that. Don't give them another reason to stop working folks. I'm happy with using BolT Browser for now. Can't wait for Skyfire..Peace.

This app is sooo sick! I tried it out on a friend's Nokia and it's great! Can't wait til it's out for all w/BBs!

I've been teased with this so many times that I really don't care if it gets released or not. The last Alpha version that got leaked was so far from being usable, that I won't count on seeing the finished product for quite a while.

I just want to be able to bring up a website within the brower such as an internet radio station, click "listen live" and hear it GO..Nobex doesn't work all that well and we all know moodio.fm isn't working anymore on Sprint phones. Will this be able to do that?

Man I totally need one of these, I am forever losing my car. Even went to the wrong parking garage once and searched for almost an hour before finding I was in the wrong garage.

I saw a download link for this last night at Blackberry Rocks. This was the site that has/had BB Messenger 5.0 OTA links. I finally reloaded BB5.0 on my Storm last night. Took me almost 2 days to find this website..

This is the first browser to support Flash/Silverlight for the BlackBerry. Also, it allows you to use this as your default browser instead of the one provided by RIM. The work is moving along very well and the team at Skyfire is doing an excellent job listening to the Alpha group's suggestions and comments.

I wonder if this has anything to do with RIM's plans to have an iPhone comparable browser by next summer. I'm sure Skyfire will still be better but at least there is a clock on them now.
