SafeDrive for BlackBerry 10 (from the same developers as SayIt) has received an update to version 1.3.0 bringing not only unlimited number of words that can be spoken, but also a huge addition to supported languages as you will see below.

If you have missed our previous articles on SafeDrive it is the perfect application for when driving as it will read your emails to you - allowing you to keep your eyes on the road, where they should be. Due to BlackBerrys API's SafeDrive does need to be open in an Active Frame to work currently but that's not the end of the world.

I've used the app since day one and it does a great job. Priced at £2.50/$3.99 it's certainly cheaper than getting a ticket from the police or wrecking your car. With all these new languages now in the mix this may be the perfect time to give it a try?

New in this update:

  • SafeDrive now can read unlimited number of words
  • Add more than 15 languages with both female and male voice, including: US English Female, US English Male, UK English Female, UK English Male, European Spanish Female, European Spanish Male, European French Female, European French Male, European German Female, European German Male, European Italian Female, European Italian Male, European Turkish Female, European Turkish Male, European Norwegian Female, European Dutch Female, European Polish Female, European Danish Female, European Finnish Female, European Czech Female, Swedish Female, Hungarian Female, Russian Female, Russian Male, European Portuguese Female, European Portuguese Male, Chinese Female, Chinese Male, Japanese Female, Japanese Male, Korean Female, Korean Male
  • New voice data which is more natural
  • Minor bugs fixed

I agree, the features in this app could work hand-in-hand with SayIt. The two should be merged somehow. I'm holding off on getting this app since BB Voice Control can "read my last BBM" or email or text, so I don't see a use for this app yet, but if it were integrated with SayIt, I could use that app as a one-stop-shop for all my "voice-related" needs.

I don't like to have the whole message read out loud in the car, but with SafeDrive I can have it read only sender+subject - and if it is important enough then I can stop the car and give it more attention, or use BB Voice control to read the whole message and respond etc... I find it complements the voice control

I agree. Sayit has the text to voice functionality. I would imagine that for most, the best use of this function would be for reading incoming messages. Seems Iike a stretch to have two separate apps.

When I'm driving I drive. The phone goes away until stopped. Not worth hurting myself or someone else. And if anyone says they called me multiple times I simply say "I was driving " and they all understand.

What about support for BES activated email accounts? I would think a lot of business users would use this but without that...

What I need from this app is the ability to hear incoming emails AND texts. Currently, it's an either or situation depending on your preferences you pick in the settings. I need it to do both while I'm driving.

I purchased and installed today, sadly, I did not know that it would not read Exchange emails, or I would have passed on it. Plus, if I send an email from any email account on the Z10 to one of the others, it does not read the message body, only the subject. When I sent one from Gmail via the web browser, it worked fine.

I had to enable it to read SMS, by default it did not, which is rather odd. Without support for BES emails, this app is a poor substitute for older ones like DriveSafe.ly. It cannot run headless either. Corporate users may want to pass if they use BES exclusively.

I am just barely satisfied, I have reached out to Long with my comments, how soon a response, hard to say.

Stopped working after upgrade, several friends having same problem. All it does in say "waiting for Email and SMS" Waiting for tech help but no reply so far.
