One of my personal favorite BlackBerry 10 apps for using in the car has received a very welcome update this week. SafeDrive is designed to read your email messages to you  - therefore allowing you to concentrate on the road. Up until this latest version you had to choose which email account would be the one used but not anymore.

Version 1.4.0 brings the ability for multiple accounts to be read out as well as reading SMS at the same time - sweet. The app has a whole bunch of features including the choice of a man or womans voice, options for how much of the message you want read (I just go for the sender and subject) and a variety of languages supported and that's just for starters.

New in v1.2.0:

  • SafeDrive now can read both SMS and Email at the same time
  • SafeDrive can monitor multiple email accounts
  • Support OS 10.2 and above
  • Bugs fixed

SafeDrive is available for all BlackBerry 10 devices and although it comes with a price tag of $3.99 that's a lot less than a ticket from the police!

It sounds like an excellent update. I'll certainly be giving it a try. Thanks for the 'heads-up'.

What I've experienced in the past is, where people use text speak, example " c u lata" and other forms of text speak, this naturally screws up the app when it's reading it out, because it can't decipher what the email or texter is actually saying.

So how good this app is, is totally dependant on the people who are emailing or texting each other, and how they are written.

Would be nice to hear from the developer if text speak language is built into this app.

Catapulted from my Z10.

I've tried it and it is, there's a couple of minor issues I identified but I've contacted the Dec so hopefully they will be fixed soon.

Righto. Built in goodness. Even Windows got a screen-reader built in. So the phone company famous for email should consider integrating this OS-wide.

iPhone for me? Scr... ahem Q that! (posted from the latter)

It is one of my favorite "needed" apps and I grateful for the update. Found a few issues and reported them to the developer so hopefully they will be fixed soon. Now waiting for Verizon to release 10.2.1 so I can use it headless.

Could someone please get the developer to respond to the bug in sayit, background mode won't disable

Have emailed them a few times and commented on their bbm channels posts yet never hear a reply from them

Posted via CB10

It does disable if you remove the apps permission to run in the background in Settings, clicking the button from within the app does not work.

Always a worry when they don't bother to reply. Guess I won't be downloading this one, if you've had that kind of experience.

Catapulted from my Z10.

To disable SayIt from running in the background I had the same problem with an empty list of apps permissions. I deleted SayIt and when I reinstalled it I went into settings within the app and turned off running in the background before ever using it once. Worked for me.

Another thing off subject, but where did those annoying ads from ..Around the Web... come from? It's hard to focus on a comment when all those Bikini chicks are in between the article and the comments.

they should read emails from BES now also because it reads form all accounts swipe down from top of app go to settings and tick emails and sms that should allow anything that comes to your phone to be read

Can it read hub notifications? What's the point in only reading out sms and email, for that price tag it should read out app notifications from the hub, like fb an twitter etc.

Haven't all Verizon customers received the update? I got 10.2.1.537 along with the world roll out. It didn't show on my phone when I checked software update. I had to tether to Link on my laptop.

I'll give it a try when it supports what I use the most, text messaging such as whatsapp and bbm... thnx!

BBM channel: C0040FF4D..... Proudly Z10 owner...

Does it read SMS messages automatically as they come in? Pressing a "read" button here would be illegal.

It does read them automatically, but it's not a headless app yet. I dunno, I bought it a few months ago, never found it great. Deleted it 3-4 weeks ago. I found it super-glitchy, sometimes reading new texts promptly, sometimes not, sometimes reading really old texts, rarely reading emails. I was, however, running leaks at the time, so I didn't criticize the Dev too much. It was the lackluster response I received regarding my inquiry on future BBM support that made me lose interest. BBM messages are generally my highest priority messages, so even though I knew it didn't support it when I bought it, I was really hoping to hear that the Dev was working on it. It goes without saying that this is just my experience, and yours may vary. I'm going to load it again with this new release, no leaked software, and see how much better it is.

Doesn’t read message, just sender and title. The settings was set to include message. Will reboot to see if that fixes it.

Bought this several months ago. Disappointed to hear that corporate email, BBM And headless are still not supported.

Honestly it really undercuts my trust In CB when they push these half arsed apps. Yesterday it was another android ported exercise app when a CB faithful has developed a native app (Cascarun) that is far superior.

I deleted recently because I couldn't figure out how to NOT have it read through my car's bluetooth connection. It wouldn't just play through the BB's speakers when I was in my car, which just was a deal-killer for me.

I had deleted it a few days ago but reinstalled based on this update -- it's still clunky and not particularly "safe" to use while driving. I really miss drivesafe.ly, which worked seamlessly with my old BBs and my bluetooth, and truly read messages as they came in. Sadly, they don't seem to have plans for a BB10 version, and the Android version simply doesn't work on my Z10.
