If you're on Rogers, Fido or TELUS (Yes, that includes Koodo) and are the proud owner of a BlackBerry Z10, you'll want to go ahead and check for software updates on your device. As reported in the CrackBerry forums and witnessed on some of our own devices, software update v10.0.10.85 is now arriving OTA. Yes, that's the software version -- the OS version itself is 10.0.10.672 and the highest release we've seen thus far, including leaks.

Update: BlackBerry has posted on the Inside BlackBerry Blog a detailed look at the changes this OS brings. You can find a quick summary of those changes below.

Feb 08, 2013 Rogers gets traveler-friendly with new roaming plan and unlocking policy

Rogers just announced that starting in March, you'll only need to be with them for 90 days before being eligible for unlocking - a huge step up from their old policy which required you to get through your entire contract. The unlocking process itself will cost $50, which you can go ahead and do right away if you're  buying your device outright. This is great and all, but you can get BlackBerry unlocking done right through us immediately and for a fair bit cheaper. Jussayin'.

Feb 06, 2013 How to unlock your BlackBerry Z10 from Canadian carriers!

Since the BlackBerry Z10 went on sale yesterday in Canada, the CrackBerry forums and twitter have been a buzz with questions on if and how the Z10 can be unlocked. Unlocking your BlackBerry from its native carrier allows you to use a SIM card from another carrier in it. This is especially handy when traveling - instead of roaming you can pick up local SIM cards. In the case of the Z10, there is a different sense of urgency going on. With the Z10 not coming to the US until March, a lot of eager BlackBerry fans in the US are looking to pick up a Canadian Z10, unlock it, and then use it on their local US-based carrier.

When we picked up our Rogers and Telus Z10s yesterday, we immediately tried to unlock them and found the standard third party "instant method" of unlocking wouldn't work. It took our unlocking partner a little time to get it all sorted, but we're now up and running! You can now get your BlackBerry Z10 unlock codes for Rogers, Bell, Telus, Fido, Virgin Mobile and Koodo from our CrackBerry Unlocking store at crackberryunlocking.com/blackberry-10. The cost of these unlocks is more than the standard instant unlock, but if you want to unlock your Z10 asap, it's the unlocking store you can trust.

If you're in need of an unlock code you can obtain one from the link below. For instructions on how to unlock your phone, watch the video above where I unlock my Rogers Z10. For written instructions, pricing and more details on unlocking, keep reading below.

Feb 05, 2013 Thorsten Heins and Rogers CEO Nadir Mohamed welcome BlackBerry Z10 to Canada

The air was electric this morning in the Rogers headquarters in Toronto as Thorsten Heins and Rogers head Nadir Mohamed introduced the BlackBerry Z10 to the Canadian media and fielded a handful of questions. It's a pretty momentous occasion, as this is the first firm sign of retail availability in North America, though Rogers is far from alone; Bell and TELUS are also offering this bad boy, and I'm getting the feeling WIND and Mobilicity will have it too, though they've been awfully quiet about the whole affair. The Brits got first stab at the BlackBerry Z10, and now Canada is next up. Today the Z10 is available on Rogers, Bell, and TELUS, but what's the difference? Pretty slight at the end of the day, but here are the details on their plans in an easy-to-compare format. This is important stuff to know if you're going to be signing on to a three-year commitment, though there are always tab and off-contract options available.

If you really need convincing as to whether or not the BlackBerry Z10 is worth the investment, you'll probably want to check out our insanely long review. Keep in mind that while those three-year commitments may be daunting, the termination fees scale with how long you have left on your contract and are much better than they used to be. Without further ado, here's our breakdown of Canadian service plans for the BlackBerry Z10.

What, you need a closer look at the BlackBerry Z10 than what our staggeringly exhaustive review provides? Fine, here are some overview videos that Rogers and Bell posted recently. We're only slightly jealous of their production values. I'm sure TELUS will have one up shortly too, and the U.S. carriers will probably have their up closer to the March launch. All three will be offering the Z10 on February 5 for $150-ish on a three-year contract, and we're hearing off-contract pricing will be in the $650 range.

Fido hits the ground running today and is the next carrier to offer up preorders for BlackBerry 10. You can reserve a device now though their standard reservation system and will have to lay down a $40 deposit in the process. There's no fun "coming soon" page or any contest to go along with this one, but if you're on Fido and looking to grab a device then this is the way to go. Only a few days left until we find out all the details on BlackBerry 10 so stay tuned! Continue Reading →

For Canadians who are anxiously waiting to get in on the mobile payment action, that day just got a little closer. Today at a Toronto Tim Hortons restaurant, CIBC and Rogers demonstrated the first ever Canadian mobile payment using their SecureTap system. We learned a few weeks back that Canadian carriers would be using RIM’s secure element manager on their mobile payment applications, and that is definitely where some of the magic is coming from here. This software will be on BlackBerry smartphones as well as Android and Windows 8 in the coming months.

Press Release

CIBC and Rogers Unveil the Future of Mobile Payments in Canada

TORONTO, May 15, 2012 - CIBC and Rogers Communications today announced an agreement to launch Canada's first joint mobile payment solution, allowing Canadians to pay with their CIBC credit card at the checkout counter using their Rogers "Near Field Communications" (NFC) enabled smartphone. Beginning later this year, customers will be able to use this payment capability at merchants across Canada where contactless credit card payments are accepted.

This announcement represents the first time a bank and a wireless carrier have joined forces to offer a commercially available mobile payments solution to Canadians that leverages the secure SIM card inside an NFC-enabled Rogers smartphone. This new solution aligns to guidelines announced yesterday by the Canadian Bankers Association for mobile payments in Canada, as well as those developed by respected international associations such as the GSM Association (GSMA), the association of mobile operators and related companies dedicated to standardizing and supporting GSM technology.
