Rogers BlackBerry Torch 9800 now available!

If you've been waiting for the BlackBerry Torch 9800 to arrive on Rogers then today is your lucky day. If you head on over to the Rogers website right now you can place your order for only $199.99 on a new 3 yr contract. Of course, if contracts aren't your thing you can go no contract but that will set you back $609.99. So, who on Rogers is going to be ordering one? Maybe holding out to see what other carriers offer in terms of pricing? Let us know in the comments folks, we're curious to see how well sales go in Canada for the Torch.

cmon new os leak!!!
swamp_water Sep 29, 2010 at 1:39 pm
So I read this and said "Wah? Telus already has this because they said they'd have it by the 24th" but then I looked on the site and Noooo, it's comming soon. I should have lowered my expectations significantly more in order to not be disappointed again. My Bad! But then, I do love my 9700.
Wiredin Sep 29, 2010 at 1:41 pm

Elric_Edward Sep 29, 2010 at 1:48 pm

for an outdated phone? Damn! Sometimes its good not being a Canadian.
At least in the US you are stuck with it for ONLY two years. =)
I still love BB though.
John.P Sep 29, 2010 at 5:05 pm
Outdated compared to...last I checked the 9800 was the latest offering by RIM?
Joe257 Sep 30, 2010 at 9:52 am
Certainly, BlackBerry 6 is not outdated. The hardware is fine but not bleeding edge for a mid-range device -- let's compare apples to apples.
The components were carefully chosen to create a device that works and meeting the objectives of a business user, a teenager, and the average person. Battery life was critical to all of those folks, so RIM had to pick appropriate hardware that fits those criteria to get more than 24 hours of battery life for a heavy user.
Unfortunately, many people do shop based on specs rather than good engineering. If you play with a Torch you will really appreciate it. If you shop based only on specs, you will miss a possible gem.
I'm not suggesting in anyway that I don't want a more powerful BlackBerry, but what folks are getting in the Torch is well put together and will be a great product for RIM. Many folks like the slide out keyboard with the touchscreen. When I first heard of this slider device, I thought it was a major fail (copying the Palm Pre), but this works perfectly for their business customers and for folks who just don't like typing on a solid glass pane.
The Torch's keyboard is far, far superior to the Palm Pre, and the Torch feels like a solid and robust device that can take a beating but still come through for you. BlackBerry 6 just adds to the great experience with this device.
shupor Sep 30, 2010 at 10:45 am
People get caught up in meaningless specs that defeat the original purpose of the device which is being a phone.
What's the sense in having the super fast processors and the wicked high res screens without having a decent battery to power it?
Not to mention the iphone4 that literally requires u to pass a dui test to make a phone call. "Stand this way, Hold your phone this way" you fail to do so, your call gets dropped.
As much as i would love to see a higer res BB, i have no regrets getting my Torch
kcdist Sep 29, 2010 at 1:49 pm
I am curious to know what software version is on the phone....anyone know?
elmejor1009 Sep 29, 2010 at 1:56 pm
Ditto that, I wonder what's the software for it
noTh1ng Sep 29, 2010 at 1:57 pm
usa and canada pricing is just out of place. 200 dollars for a phone with 3 year contract is pathetic, every provider in the EU would give a phone for 1 Euro away if it would contain a 3 year contract..
pastornordel Sep 29, 2010 at 2:38 pm
And are your EU new phone releases at pace with the US? What about after buy in. The real cost of ownership is the monthly price of the contract. Rogers cost me $80/month for phone use and 6gig of data.
Seegar Sep 29, 2010 at 3:54 pm
they usually arent on pace. but 8 euros (about 13 dollars) for unlimited data and tethering does sound a lot better than your 80 dollars...wouldnt you agree? even if we have to wait a bit longer. besides since you are on rogers you are behind the US too...
Joe257 Sep 30, 2010 at 10:17 am
Real competition in Canada is just not there. I think there are only really three major players: Bell, Rogers & Telus.
Seegar Oct 1, 2010 at 11:24 am
I agree. The big three seem to be making good business so why change the prices? The customers dont really have a choice and the companies take advantage of them. Switching to the smaller carries like virgin and kodoo might help but who really wants to stick out a 3 year contract to get out when you get an upgrade after 2 if you stay with the same carrier?!
elmejor1009 Sep 29, 2010 at 2:01 pm
I checked the Blackberry website to see what was the carrier software but it doesn't show the Torch for Rogers yet.
dboy54 Sep 29, 2010 at 2:03 pm
looks like you get a free bt headset with an online order too. But who wants to wait for it to be shipped?
jvictor77 Sep 29, 2010 at 2:18 pm
Someone in the forums had it in his hands but cannot activate till tomorrow. He put the OS at .246
brown.boy Sep 29, 2010 at 2:19 pm
Got the Visions store flyer today. Bell is offering the Torch at $148 with a 3 year term of course starting Oct. 1....
C'mon Rogers.............
poonsaloon Sep 29, 2010 at 3:31 pm
I was going to ask the Rogers Rep to match the $179 price but $148 is even better!!!
Flip2Pour Sep 29, 2010 at 7:23 pm
what part of the country did you get this flyer in? I dont see it in mine.
Need solid amo to take to Rogers when asking to price match.
Thanks
brown.boy Sep 30, 2010 at 2:21 am
Got Vision Flyer in Vancouver... Might just be offering it here..
Tangocore Sep 29, 2010 at 2:40 pm
called the 5 nearest rogers sellers, i got answers between tomorrow and we dont have stock yet to launch is next week
The Legendary Sep 29, 2010 at 2:52 pm
I was just in a rogers plus store, and the boxes are stacked up. The sellers are concerned they have too many now
OnePoint8T Sep 29, 2010 at 3:15 pm
Yet again another 3G device cannot support UMA/TalkSpot on Rogers as per the Rogers site. Seriously Rogers, get in the game already! Orange and TMo have figured this out UMA<-->3G. And stop blaming this on a RIM software issue, you've done it for over a year with the 9700 and it clearly isn't RIM software!!!
Will be curious to see if the settings are locked out. Or if 6.0.0.246 allows you to select mobile network preferences. Otherwise I'll be heading south to ATT to buy one that isn't hindered by Rogers.
poonsaloon Sep 29, 2010 at 3:30 pm
Not too sure if this is the same thing you're talking about but the Rogers spokesperson said this:
"Yes. The Torch is UMA capable and Rogers is the only carrier that can support 3G UMA.
To enable the service on your device, you can contact a Rogers Representative and ask to have the Rogers Wi-Fi calling service (formerly known as Talkspot) added to your account."
OnePoint8T Sep 30, 2010 at 12:08 am
It is the same thing, however Rogers product pages states that it is not TalkSpot capable.
Either Miranda doesn't know what she's talking about, or the marketing people at Rogers don't know what to put on their site.
I have UMA working on my 9700 with 5.0.0.938 software and I can say that handoffs to 3G are not graceful and often end up dropping the call. In my opinion it will not support TalkSpot at this time.
All I want to know is if they disabled the ability to select the mobile network preference like they originally did in the 9700.
Ramsy Sep 29, 2010 at 4:11 pm
Does anyone know if there is a way to get the Rogers 9800 theme files so that I can load it on my AT&T 9800? I much prefer Rogers theme and colors to the At&T theme. Thanks.
brando0623 Oct 2, 2010 at 6:15 pm
The Rogers theme is the precision theme with a Rogers wallpaper. As far as I know I don't believe there is a way to get the Rogers wallpaper
freddysrevng Sep 29, 2010 at 4:27 pm
And Congratulations if you are "fortunate" enough to be getting one. Based in Chicago, I have had mine since "launch day" here a couple of months ago and having had the Curve 8310, Curve 8900, Bold 9000 and Bold 9700 - let me tell you - TORCH is the BEST Blackberry yet. So enjoy and good luck. Hey, Ramsy - if you can figure out how to get that "Rogers Theme" in the US - let me know, it looks good. Thanks.
ShiftyAxel#CB Sep 29, 2010 at 5:11 pm
God I hope Vodafone UK release it soon :(
benkason Sep 29, 2010 at 5:27 pm
Have had 4 ordered since Friday on Bell Mobility. 179.99 for a 3yr renewal. Just got email confirmation today that I will be receiving them October 1st.
sdg1963 Sep 29, 2010 at 5:27 pm
So I went down to Best Buy today to place a deposit on the phone, and was told that they won;t be selling the Torch outright. You need to sign onto a contract, or else wait until October. WTF? I know I can go to the States, and get an AT&T phone for $499. Anyone have any ideas, or comments on Rogers' pricing and strategy to sell to "committed" subscribers only?
Bold_until_Hybrid_Comes Sep 29, 2010 at 5:37 pm
Does anyone know if the rogers at conestoga mall in waterloo has them??
jinxednuance Sep 29, 2010 at 6:20 pm
getting one!
ice7master Sep 29, 2010 at 7:05 pm
Got the student plan with rogers using my old student card, really hope it comes by friday evening...really don't want to wait all weekend!
javatyger Sep 29, 2010 at 8:32 pm
Talked to my regular Rogers store here in Edmonton and the manager stated they don't receive subsidy until tomorrow, so they can't sell it until then. He's got them in stock and on hold for me, but said he just can't sell it until tomorrow. :(
chrismage Sep 29, 2010 at 9:49 pm
Hey today was the last day im using my 8220 , i did a wipe on it as im selling it on ebay. I will be at the nearest Rogers Store at 10am when they open to get my Torch. Online ordering for today was just for newbie customers. I cant hardly wait!!! Question will they have accessories for the Torch store at Rogers as well?
hometownhero Sep 29, 2010 at 10:12 pm
I'll be selling my unlocked At&t 9800 I've had for a month and buying a rogers unit tomorrow, need my warranty.
coreyk86 Sep 29, 2010 at 11:14 pm
I'm so getting one but definitely not for $610
CalgaryMarc Sep 29, 2010 at 11:22 pm
I'm considering a switch to the Torch but am nervous about being able to sync with the above software. Does anyone know if there *is* a problem? Over the last couple of days I've seen conflicting info from US users.
squeegeeboy Sep 30, 2010 at 3:38 am
You can sync just fine with Outlook 2007 and Windows 7 64bit. Where the problem lies is if you have Outlook 2010 64bit. The OS doesn't matter.
baldock Sep 30, 2010 at 9:13 am
Got excited, it showed up a day early on the site, but for myself who had to do an upgrade, I had to wait until this morning, but already things are going, got a great deal on the upgrade, and a bunch of bonuses and away we go! Can't wait to see this thing in action!
tweak_s Sep 30, 2010 at 10:39 am
A bit heavy for my liking but otherwise looks like an awesome new device! I'm not due to upgrade but bet all the torch purchasers are all excited! Haha.
I do just wish that they included some more beefed up hardware. While those who said this device is designed for business users, sure that's great then. However, this was suppose to be RIMs new flagship device or at least their common flagship device! This means that it will be the one compared to other devices etc. Beefing it up would allow power/entertainment users to be excited for it as well!
Wiredin Sep 30, 2010 at 12:40 pm
its a lot lighter than I thought it would be in my hand. Compared to my 8900 with BB skin, I can't feel a difference on if I don't have both in each hand.
greggag Sep 30, 2010 at 11:21 am
well i cannot get a torch today. my upgrade is not due till end of nov. i cannot upgrade early, customer relations will do nothing. there is no extra $50 charge to upgrade earlier. If I claim my device is broken they will replace it with another 9000. OH wait pay the contract cancellation fee (+$200) and then I can get one for $199.
SOme way to keep a customer. I see Vision electronics out west is offering the torch on the bell system for 149.
HMM maybe rogers is gonna lose me....the vpn via tethering doesn't work either.
BoldMeister Sep 30, 2010 at 11:49 am
I've reserved mine at a Bell store in downtown Toronto. Bell is also getting them today. How come no one is reporting this fact?
Just curious.
Wiredin Sep 30, 2010 at 12:39 pm
*dancing* was allowed to upgrade 3 months early! Got it, love it, can't put it down!
MikeRotch76 Sep 30, 2010 at 12:48 pm
I just got home from BB here in Edmonton. And as per subject, cannot buy phone without contract yet. I also went to my local Rogers Wireless store. To buy the phone outright from them is $755 after tax and you have to pay cash (or debit), no credit card. The reason for the extra price above the Rogers.com site is because they are technically not a Rogers store (there are no Rogers stores, they are privately owned stores authorized to sell Rogers' stuff) so their cost is higher.
jeneil Sep 30, 2010 at 12:51 pm
i ordered my torch yesterday online and charged it to my account
jeneil Sep 30, 2010 at 12:53 pm
go to a rogers plus store...they should have it cheaper too......altogether with tax it comes up to like $690
sheesh Sep 30, 2010 at 1:01 pm
Just checked the Telus site, looks like it's up for sale now!!
ICEMAN9 Sep 30, 2010 at 1:55 pm
ORDERED MY TORCH TODAY FROM ROGERS OVER THE PHONE...HOPEFULLY IT COMES IN TOMORROW, SO I DON'T HAVE TO WAIT ALL WEEKEND...
HorseVu Sep 30, 2010 at 3:01 pm
Just got the Costco email flyer. $179.99 (new 3-yrs), includes a $100 Costco cash card. Limited time offer until October 10th.
MikeRotch76 Sep 30, 2010 at 6:47 pm
I just picked up my torch for $609.99 + tax at the Rogers Plus store like someone else said earlier.
transferring over my stuff to my Torch now!! I CAN'T WAIT!!
jonfry3#CB Oct 1, 2010 at 2:12 am
Picked mine up today. Absolutely fantastic. The only thing I would have like to see was a front facing camera for video calls, since the phones it's up against have that capability. Other then that it's a real gem.
jordanmah Oct 1, 2010 at 11:40 am
picked up two yesterday, both hardware upgrades from a rogers store in downtown vancouver. the guy said they sold out all 50 the store received for opening day. so far the phone is UNBELIEVABLE.
lando989 Oct 1, 2010 at 6:50 pm
Available to new activations only, but still a heck of a deal.
79.99 on NEW 3 yr activations.
