Streaming music is all the rage these days and luckily on BlackBerry 10 we have a ton of options. Being a rock fan I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled upon Rock Radio in BlackBerry World - not so much because of what it does, but more about its ease of use and user interface.

I always seem to favour apps that have a dark theme, not really for battery saving issues - I just prefer they way they look and Rock Radio looks great with yellow and white writing on the dark background.

Where choosing a station is made easy is that the application consists of 35 channel options - ranging from 60's rock to thrash metal, so there's something for everyone. You can just choose your rock style of choice, sit back and enjoy.

Rock Radio is free to download and is available for all BlackBerry 10 devices - double bonus! The app is an Android port and one thing I was slightly disappointed in was that on my Q10 I couldn't view the name of the group and song that was playing - where this isn't an issue on the all touch BB10 handsets. There are some sharing options, but once again, due to it being an Android app we don't get BlackBerry Hub options which is shame.

Apart from that though it does the job well. If you're a rock fan I see no reason not to give this one a go. Bear in mind that if you have a low data plan you'll want to be on Wi-Fi to avoid hitting your monthly data allowance.

Features include:

  • Listen to 35+ hand-programmed rock music channels
  • Not sure which channel to pick? Explore the easy-to-use Styles list
  • Stream music from the app or in the background while you do other things
  • Control audio and view track titles from the lock screen
  • Save your favorite channels for quick and easy access later
  • New Sleep Timer feature allows you to fall asleep to music without draining your data plan
  • Set data streaming preferences for when using a Cellular vs. WiFi network
  • Share your favorite tracks and channels on Facebook, Twitter, or by email
  • Optional buffer bar with data display helps you keep track of your data usage

Since Beats headphones sound like crap, comparing your Z30 to them isn't doing your Z30 any favors.

freddysrevng3

"Beats" on HTC One....you know the feature that they tried to sell that garbage Android phone?

Speakers on Z30 are superior, but because BlackBerry has/had no marketing....

Really wish BlackBerry would revamp the BBM music service and bundle it with BBM cross platform. How can it go wrong? BBM voice, video, groups, channels and music. Come on Chen.

I never used BBM Music, but most people are really naive, as to, how good BlackBerry Link is in syncing iTunes.

As long as you're not limited to a small number of songs per month like the original version. That killed the original bbm music service.

Lastly, James R. You are on a "roll this morning".... I have already added this and Enpass this morning on your recommendation.

Now if you could figure out how to get Instagram..... BlackBerry would sell a lot more phones.

Side load iGrann. It is a flawless native Instagram and even has dark theme. 10/10

Just do a search in the forums or Google.

Better yet run a 10.2.1 leak and direct download the official Instagram FTW.

I liked the idea of cache songs from bbm music. Limited data people are at a disadvantage.

What does streaming music have to do with access to all my private data including the cloud? These app are out if control. Do they work for the NSA?

canuckbear

Take your beads and stfu. Just kidding. It is out of control.

It lacks native-style integration with the OS (e.g.: no sharing to native apps other than SMS and email), but you can share to other Android apps (like Flipboard and Skype for example), and it truly runs at native speed. It's worth a try.

Thx

Awesome. Super fast. No option to skip songs, but still a great app. Highly recommended for fans of any genre of rock or metal.

Thanks for the heads up - BTW, if you swipe down from the top of the screen while on a channel, hit 'Hide Bar' and the current artist and track are shown ...

Don't generally like android ports, but just downloaded this one and signed up. Super collection of music!!! Appears to function well on my zed 10.

What's with the permissions though? Seems like it needs access to way too much info and files just to rock out....wish the developers would at least offer an explanation why they need all this access- it would make me feel a little less uneasy loading some apps.
(like the S4BB stuff-i quit using their Apps entirely. A Chinese company wanting access at all levels to use a simple app? Wonder what NSA is called in China? In any event, with them it's thanks but No thanks...)

Good one!

Why do they need access to all my files? Not likely. Deleted.
