This is the "Wilhelm scream" sound effect. It has been used in many movies including: Them!, Star Wars and it's sequels, Indiana Jones, Batman Returns, Hellboy and Toy Story. It is also used in every episode of 'The Middleman'. It has become something of an inside joke in the film/sound industry.

Not many people now wgat the Wilhelm Scream is. Just watch any George Lucas(both Star Wars Trilogies use it often), Indiana Jones, or Peter Jackson film and you'll hear it. This things been around since 1951.
