RIM teases those waiting for BlackBerry 6 on Twitter!
By
Bla1ze on 20 Jul 2010 12:50 pm
Research In Motion has been in overdrive lately with their marketing. They've taken over our TV's with BlackBerry Messenger commercials, web pages are now flooded with ads promoting BlackBerry Messenger and the BlackBerry Twitter team has been utilizing the social network to their advantage. The above pic is that of a tweet sent from the @BlackBerry account, promoting the usage of the hashtag #BB6iscoming. A quick look on Twitter search shows that it certainly has been making its way across Twitter. The only thing we'd like to see is a full list of what devices will be supporting BlackBerry 6. What do you guys think, a list would be nice eh? Can we make that happen @BlackBerry? Maybe I should Tweet them and ask nicely. ;)
chiratsu Jul 20, 2010 at 12:54 pm
Do it already, hopefully we will see some leaks before the official!
shacknews Jul 20, 2010 at 12:57 pm
Samsung Galaxy S already pre-ordered.
Glad Im not stuck with Research In Slow-Motion.
Steve Rizla Jul 20, 2010 at 2:40 pm
One less person waiting in line.
donovanfromwinnipeg Jul 20, 2010 at 12:57 pm
I have a feeling that my 9630 won't be supported :(
webmastir Jul 20, 2010 at 1:59 pm
your assumption is correct. also being a 9630 owner, i will be moving to android especially cause of this on my next upgrade @ the end of the year. it's been fun :)
shabbs Jul 21, 2010 at 8:25 am
We'll keep your seat warm... you'll be back.
diego.roscetti Jul 20, 2010 at 12:57 pm
I just tweeted Blackberry. Maybe if we bombard them with Tweets they will give in and finally tell us!!!
Wolfroid Jul 20, 2010 at 12:59 pm
Ha..he...ha...what a teaser....
Playing with our Crackheads ...NOT good.....;)))
BoooooOOooom
mas3222 Jul 20, 2010 at 1:02 pm
Its good they are marketing harder now. It seems like in the past that they were relying on the fact that everyone knows what a blackberry is over a true marketing push. I bet this is going to really help them out.
scalemaster34 Jul 20, 2010 at 2:11 pm
Seriously OS6 does sound like a step in the right direction... but if the rumors of the Storm2 "refresh" are correct, then it sounds 95% of us will need to buy a new phone in order to see what it can do.
RIM really needs to go ahead and break the news on which devices really will be able to run OS6
BadCeddy Jul 20, 2010 at 1:02 pm
Is Blackberry Bold 9700 compatible with this new OS?
phoneboy101 Jul 20, 2010 at 3:37 pm
If not I'm leaving Blackberry after 5 years of loyal servitude.
BadCeddy Jul 21, 2010 at 2:14 pm
I agree with you, if they are not compatible on my Bold2, I don't wanna spend my money on the new device and then have to know that the new OS (probably OS7 or 8) will be on a newer device. Sigh
Pilot Prop Jul 20, 2010 at 1:02 pm
im ready for this
tshudyb Jul 20, 2010 at 1:08 pm
I talked to a guy from BlackBerry the other day, he said that BlackBerry 6 will come out for older devices a while after the new BlackBerry 6 devices come out. I tried to get more out of him but he refused. He even had to act like the 9800, 9670, and the Storm 3 don't even exist; told me that all I can do is continue to follow that leaks on the blogs for any new information.
BadCeddy Jul 20, 2010 at 1:19 pm
Older devices... Hmm then it means my Blackberry Bold 2 has a chance to be updated too? That would be soooo great if they really let it happen, I just got my BB 2 months ago and I don't wanna buy a new BB just to get my OS6 on it, plus it's kinda expensive here in my country. :(
soccernamlak Jul 20, 2010 at 1:50 pm
My guess/hope is that they will have OS6 lite for older phones: mainly, the core system files for OS6 to allow application compatibility across lineups minus the Webkit browser, from which I've heard is one of the main factors dictating the minimum specifications of the hardware.
decypher44 Jul 20, 2010 at 1:06 pm
If 8530 doesn't get OS6, the I'll be stuck with OS5 for a year and a half!
At least I like OS5 and it works.
mflava Jul 20, 2010 at 1:09 pm
What's the point of teasing people, just release the thing! It doesn't even matter anymore I'm selling my Bold 9650 and moving on.
Spiral_ouT Jul 20, 2010 at 1:13 pm
Someone sounds bitter..
The point would be do increase anticipation.
StormAddict718 Jul 20, 2010 at 9:45 pm
placing my storm2 up for sale... moved on to the Droid X...
bullgawd Jul 20, 2010 at 1:10 pm
I still dont have a working version of 5.0 and they talk about 6?! FUCK RIM AND NEXTEL.
DarshOne Jul 20, 2010 at 1:14 pm
dont buy a watered down blackberry running on nextel?
bullgawd Jul 20, 2010 at 1:17 pm
Or support the phone no matter the carrier?
wilsonryanp Jul 21, 2010 at 9:47 am
It's not RIM "not supporting" the phone, update is available, NexTel has decided to hold back on it for some reason.
ratsttam#CB Jul 20, 2010 at 1:32 pm
8330m still stuck at 4.5 (eliminating my ability to run the Kindle app, Sirius radio, XM radio, and a lot of the newer programs that otherwise would run on my hardware.
gabead Jul 20, 2010 at 1:15 pm
Isn't that nice. Next.
Nyce-Daytona Jul 20, 2010 at 1:17 pm
Hmmm I thought all Nextel devices self destructed last year once they realized the no longer had a place in the smartphone world.
contento Jul 20, 2010 at 1:24 pm
I'm hoping beyond hope that OS6 release will coincide with Rhapsody FINALLY releasing their Berry client software that has been "coming soon" for what seems like forever.
Oh, that, and that my S2 can get it.
dmann96 Jul 20, 2010 at 1:28 pm
After yesterdays announcement of the Storm receiving a "refresh" much like the Bold (9700a) it all but put the nail in the coffin of any in market devices getting BlackBerry6 (except the Bold 9650).
I personnally don't like it BUT I understand that there has to be a cut off on being able to deliver on the performance of the OS and if 512 app memory is what does it, then so be it. I prefer that over getting a POS just to "have" OS 6 on my device.
It was shown on the 9800 using 260+ worth of app memory, I don't want to go back to only being able to have 10 apps on my device before I am out of memory.
I hope at least to see the OS 5.1 released that was shown on the 9670 that had some updated features but I would certainly miss the bells and whistles of OS 6. Better have WebKit though. I say the new browser must be released to all 256 memory devices. Then I can truly live without OS 6.
sk8er_tor Jul 20, 2010 at 1:29 pm
I'm glad to see they're ramping up their marketing.
bayzbol44 Jul 20, 2010 at 1:33 pm
I am tired of BB and their software updates (or lack of). So some people will get BB6 and some will still have the old one??? Some people right now have BB5 and others still have BB4??? Does that make sense to anyone? Why can't all BB owners have the option of getting the most recent software update (without via a Leak)? Ugh, at least Apple does something right for their users.
JasW Jul 20, 2010 at 4:42 pm
Apple basically makes only one phone. If RIM had only released the 9000, the 9700, and (now) the 9800, you'd have what Apple does. If you buy other phones from RIM, caveat emptor. Always buy the flagship, or else you're just another loser with a crappy budget Curve on 2G.
skynny70 Jul 20, 2010 at 5:10 pm
iOS4 doesn't work on all versions of the iPhone. The amount of functionality even varies based upon which iPhone you own.
kellidotca Jul 20, 2010 at 1:37 pm
Whatever. Rogers hasn't updated my 8900 past 4.6. I had to put 5 on it myself, and i still have just under 2 years left in my contract.. i won't be throwing an OS6 party any time soon.
rizzzzoooo Jul 20, 2010 at 1:40 pm
Would not be surprised if we all need to plomp down more cash to get a new device to have OS 6. Nice going RIM. Can't wait to see what device I will have to buy after that to have OS 7 in say hmmmm...6 months. It is starting to look like we will need to get new devices every 6-9 months to have the newest OS they release.
MrFadedGlory Jul 20, 2010 at 1:41 pm
Goodbye BlackBerry hello iPhone 4. Its been a good 3 years but its time to jump ship. RIM is stepping in the right direction but wayyyyyy behind. P.S. All you guys that love your physical keyboard better start getting used to all touch cause that where the technology is heading brotha!!!!
Spiral_ouT Jul 20, 2010 at 3:10 pm
Goodbye reliability, hello dropped calls unless you have an ugly case.
Goodbye wicked battery, hello still dies after a day of use.
Law2138 Jul 20, 2010 at 1:47 pm
People even remotely interested in what RIM is tweeting knew that you could "Search emails. Search contacts. Search the web. Search everything." on OS6 weeks ago.
I think it would have been more exciting to just post a date ie 9/16/2010 (or whatever date) and let us speculate what is going to happen that day.
The_Shawn Jul 20, 2010 at 1:50 pm
If my 8120 doesn't get 6.0 I'm gonna lose it! I will not buy another BB.... get real people, if your device doesn't have a trackpad, it probably won't see 6.0, even some since the trackpads started may not see 6.0. you got what you paid for, if you wanted 6.0 so bad then you should have waited. You bought a device with whatever software on it, and thats what you paid for.
3Dee Jul 20, 2010 at 1:51 pm
... #In November ;)
HTC_Droid_EvO Jul 20, 2010 at 2:03 pm
The more devices that come out they out due this slack re-vamped 5.0
Galaxy S phones on every carrier ...EVO...Droid Inc/X/2...Iphone4
Yea...time is not on there side :)
kameleon Jul 20, 2010 at 2:07 pm
OMG.... why all the babies crying? I mean lets get real here.
For those that are yelling because "so and so carrier still don't have my XXXX supported beyond 4.X"....It is not RIM that makes the carriers support new os versions. They leave it up to the individual carrier to decide if they want to support a newer version. So go gripe at your carrier... not RIM.
Now on to those that are bitching because "my 7100 series won't support BB6". It would be stupid of RIM to support very old hardware on a new OS like this. Also it will use more memory than OS5 so suffice to say it won't run on anything with less than 512MB. Running BB6 on anything less would be like OS5 on my Bold 9000... I might have 10MB free after a reboot, but we won't get into that.
And RIM is not the only one that doesn't support older hardware for new os's. Look at microsoft windows. Could you run Windows 7 on an old P233 w/ 32MB ram??? Most likely not. Could you run it on a p3 500 w/ 512MB ram? Possibly but it would be crappy(er). Vendors have to set minimums on hardware specs so that the software side of things will perform within expectations.
Basically I am sick and tired of everyone whining about this junk and saying they are jumping ship. Quite frankly I hope you DO go to another phone so I don't have to listen to you whining about everything... although some poor soul will still have to listen to you gripe about crappy battery life (*cough* android *cough) and hope you like pretty cases if you want an iCrapPhone4 since they don't know how to design proper antennas.

jzajac Jul 20, 2010 at 2:55 pm
Thank GOD a voice of reason! Very good points. I'm holding off on using my annual upgrade on Verizon for now just to see what happens with OS6, then it's time for the new Bold (if memory doesn't take too big of a hit while upgrading from 5) or the new flagship device for Big Red and hope for more than the 512.
Gallia Jul 21, 2010 at 8:01 am
It's responses like this that make me wonder how shortsighted people really are. It's fine if your provider offers you annual upgrades, or if your company offers you a new device, or that you're simply loaded, most of us just have to sit out our 2 or 3 year contracts. And yes, then it does suck that your device is being left out. If you can't wrap your head around that, you're just being an inconsiderate jerk. And you're being one.
xstex Jul 20, 2010 at 2:07 pm
If this doesn't come for 8520 (which I'm thinking it won't) I will be looking for a new phone
rlhammon Jul 20, 2010 at 2:17 pm
I've yet to see a advertisement for BBM, or much of anything for RIM / BB. Maybe they are pushing it in Canada, but I'm not seeing it in my travels around the U.S.A.
It would be nice to see a marketing push, and advertise what these phones can do. Heck... overall RIM does a POOR job at letting consumers know how to use the phone, setup the phone, and all the things they can do with the phone. I came here because I kept getting shown new things after having had a BB for months.
As for OS6. Yeah... you have to draw a line in the sand, but I bought a Storm2 because of the OpenGL, and other features expecting it to be worth the upgrade... shouldn't have at all. Should have waited, my contract would be up then, and purchased a Storm3 this November. Lesson learned... because I didn't get anything useful from the upgrade (phone works better, but the "BUZZ" on silent drives me nuts). Maybe I'll check out OS6 when it gets here and decide that's what I want... but I'm done "having to have" the newest for the sake of having it. RIM burned me once there already...
sourkevin Jul 20, 2010 at 2:42 pm
At least my contract ends in november, where ill be jumping ship, not from a bb, but from att. Come one LTE!
petes99 Jul 20, 2010 at 3:01 pm
Considering how long it took for the "Tour2" to arrive (remember when that little post hit Facebook?), I would expect a minimum 4 month lag here.
mrlee7 Jul 20, 2010 at 3:01 pm
Here are some things to consider about the Blackberry OS6:
Blackberry is Marketing this new OS a lot. They have never done this before...
..So why would they generate so much hype on something that is gona only be on devices with 512+ ram..
...only to disappoint a crap load of blackberry users who are the main ones salivating to this new OS.
They have to have us in mind, meaning there has to be something for us?
iono just a thought
Law2138 Jul 20, 2010 at 3:17 pm
Maybe they'll play it like Apple with the Ipods and Iphones (no, not that way) and make BB6 available for every phone but with certain features restricted to higher memory devices?
I definitely agree that there is alot of marketing behind this BB6 which is generating alot of attention. Leaving the loyal customers who are still under contract out in the cold isn't the ideal thing to do.
At a minimum, they should have support for a barebones BB6 for 1 year from the official release. That way people can put in 1 year before they are eligible to upgrade.
shacknews Jul 20, 2010 at 3:19 pm
Good bye Blackberry! You've been boring enough for me!
Hello Andoid!
JasW Jul 20, 2010 at 4:49 pm
^^^THIS from someone who just posted last month that he wanted a 9800 "SO bad."
Apparently not bad enough. I know 6 year olds on Christmas Eve who have more patience.
HTC_Droid_EvO Jul 20, 2010 at 3:28 pm
Trademark...lol
Ahhh but so true...Storm 3 was suppose to be part of the second coming with 6.0
LMAO, guess not
dmichaelford Jul 20, 2010 at 4:04 pm
Just to get off topic for a second, was driving home and saw a billboard for AT&T and they were advertising their flagship service with a flagship phone, not the I Phone but a Blackberry Bold... Have fun to all those jumping ship. Hope you have a soft grip when making a call
gorith Jul 20, 2010 at 4:31 pm
I am pretty sure my 9550 will not be able to run OS6, since theres a refresh coming at the end of the year with double the memory. Which is fine. I'll ride out my contract(or most of it until I can upgrade) then get an OS6(or OS7)compatible phone then. 5.0 works fine, it could be better but what can't in life?
Also to Kameleon, +1. I agree with you 100%
abboder Jul 20, 2010 at 4:34 pm
This teaser is pathetic just like their BBM commercials. Hey look, you can search dumb shit on your phone! Wow I'm sold! Oh look what else, you can send pictures to people on your phone! OMG I'm blown away! BBM must be the greatest invention ever! Horrible marketing. Horrible.
doctibby Jul 20, 2010 at 4:42 pm
Ok here is my 2 cents...
My device is not old, it is not even 2 years old. I currently have the original Storm 9350. If I knew then what I know now, I wound not have purchased this phone. I feel that RIM and carriers alike should support and update our devices for at least 2 years. Have technologies changed yes, but last year, RIM admitted on a video that if they did not improve their OS by this summer then they would loose customers to other devices. They admitted their software was old and was in need of updates. Their timeline was this summer 2010.
I am sick of all the hype regarding what devices will or will not get the new OS. RIM should make an announcement. Either way they will probably loose most of the original storm customers who felt like they were dumped on. PLEASE READ I SAID MOST AND NOT ALL.
I am tired of my screen freezing up, the memory leaks and the slowness of the browser. Damn Opera Mini is much faster on the phone than the BB browser.
For those who stated if Windows 7 could be installed on a P233 with 35 MB of ram needs to realize that a P233 was a product in the late 80's early 90's not 2008. Furthermore before you compare phones to desktop PC's you need to realize a desktop PC can be updated by purchasing more RAM, new HDD and even a new motherboard etc. Can this be done to a phone.... NO.
Lastly, RIM would not have the memory problem if they would change how their phones utilize their memory. For example, the original storm Device has 879 MB of memory and a 8 GB Media card.... Why is RIM only allocating 125 MB or so for application memory???? They should be able to fix this with a new OS, just like one can do with a PC with partitioning the hard drive.
I have heard great things about blackberries and is the reason I got one in 2008. However it has been an agonizing 2 years. I can't wait until the end of the year where both my wife and I can get a real device.
Oh and by the way, I don't use BBM or care for it to keep me on a device I hate. There are other applications in the wild which can do the same without the headaches of BB.
Jaiden Jul 20, 2010 at 7:14 pm
Hate to break it to you, but your phone is OLD!!!!! I'm talking crazy old!!! No worries, I have the same phone. I can't really be mad at RIM, I knew the specs on my phone at the time I bought it. I also knew I would have to be with Telus for the next 3 years. Now, picture this, a carrier that revamps thier contracts to allow their customers the option to upgrade their phones on a yearly basis with a minimum upgrade fee and contract extension, lets say 100 bucks and extend your contract a year. I could've went from my storm, to the storm 2, to the 9800 when it's released . . . I'd think RIM was awesome and Telus was the greatest. Instead, I'm stuck with 128mb of memory in a 1gb memory world, single sensor surepress, no multitap etc. etc. By the time I'm eligible for an upgrade, it'll be like being released from prison after 25 years in maximum security!
Joshyy-Rey Jul 20, 2010 at 4:58 pm
i sold my Bold 9700 to get the iphone 4 for the better raw power media experience, apps and web browser. before my bold (which was my first BB) i had a iphone so missing those key media elements, apps, and the browser on my Bb not being up to snuff i had to leave, not saying i didn't love all the other features of the Bb it was the second best phone i had ever had behind the iphone and not far behind im glad to see RIM giving their die hards what they deserve because blackberry os was falling behind web os ios and android but im glad to see them making a push hey who knows if its awesome enough i might go back but i need to see more hardware improvements for my sake thats just my personal taste.
and seriously quit buying into the antenna hype of iphone 4...its not that bad... ive dropped one call so car and ive had it since launch... and i dropped multiple calls on my bb during my time with it so dropping calls is dropping calls.
yeahman Jul 20, 2010 at 5:05 pm
Research In slow-Motion is gasping for air in the flood of iPhone and Android hype. The keyboard is what drew me to BB but the slow development is too much to take now. I'll have to do without the great BB keyboard. RIP RIM. It was a great run.
cdf3 Jul 20, 2010 at 5:55 pm
We're all eagerly awaiting the release of OS 6. I see quite a few posts in regards to RIM being slow in releasing OS 6. Keep in mind, RIM is not the only one. Let's not forget about Android devices. Go to any Android blog or forum and that's all you see. When is Froyo being released. We're waiting on OS 6, and they're waiting on Froyo. Therefore we're not the only ones waiting in line.
sugardad Jul 20, 2010 at 9:34 pm
I'm not willing to be milked yet once more!
I had a S1 and In less than a Year the S2 came to Market fixing all (most) S1 Problems and being more stabler and fast and OpenGL.. and stuff...
Yet once more In less than a Year S2 Is about to become obsolete and about to categorized to legacy OS'es..
I got recently a N1 and Looking forward to ditch my S2 for Droid X **as soon as It will be official** that S2 will miss the "New Wave" train..
(I made my First move and I'm ready to commence my Second!)
Android Is FAST (not only) On Updates.
It's In NO way like RIM, NO ONE IS WAITING for FROYO!
RIM Makes OS 6
Google makes Android..
N1 which is a Google Experience Device, ALREADY has Froyo and It's OTA update Is still being pushed to all customers that have the old ERE27 (2.1) OS.
I do not care about Samsung or Moto or LG etc etc
These are 3rd party Vendors and It's up to them when and IF they are upping their Devices to latest OS.
Goggle Updated It's OWN device **FAST**!
BlackBerry Is "Ditching" their OWN Devices for their own "Refreshed" Reasons...
Android already gives me what OS 6 Is supposed to, plus many more features (Speed, OTA Sync, Pushed Emails, Exchange Support, Attachment View/Edit, GPS with Maps to SD, Apps to SD with OS 2.2, Wireless Access Point (That's what i use right now to write my thoughts), USB Tethering etc etc).
Yeah surely we look forward, people and tech Is moving that way..
Surely you cannot install W7 on P3/233 with 512MB of RAM that's archaic... and as an example It's exaggerated I must say...
My McBookPro (Summer 2009) came with Leopard and was XP/Vista Capable, Now It's not only able to Run 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard) but It can Do Windows 7 plus It's also FAST and scores a 5.0/5.6 (Disk Access/Aero Graphics) and 6.0 In all other aspects that's sweet!
So the kind of comparison between P3-P4HT with OS5/OS6 Is at minimal Invalid and exaggerated, My 2009 Machine can do same things as fast as Todays Machines with no lags and no cut to half features...
My November 2009 Device (S1) can't do what my April 2010 Device (S2) can do and my April 2010 Device already **seems** to be OLD and Obsolete while It's still 2010!!
(Dates mentioned above are European Release Dates for Storm Series).
In Mid 2010 RIM re-Introduces features that already should be there, like True Multitouch all-over OS, Multitouch Gestures, Descent Browser, Efficient OS, better App and Memory Management, Connectivity features, etc etc
With Tradeoff to "Ditch" all Current Devices for the ones you "Gotta Have".
What about Consumer Loyalty and Consumer Invested Money on their Brand...
Please....
OS 6.0 will make many, MANY people Bitter because a large sum of *CURRENT* devices are already seem not to be eligible for the OS Refresh/Update.
It's going to be a Hot Summer and a Hot Q3/Q4 as Market Share Is about to change a LOT, W7 Mobile Series and GingerBread (Android OS 3.0) is just around the Corner and Bitter people will surely prefer these (Sweet) solutions than the "about-to-become-legacy" OS 5....
I'm done *having to have* the newest for the sake of having it.
reeneebob Jul 21, 2010 at 2:24 am
Um, they do realize WebOS has had this for, like, EVER?
Way to be revolutionary, RIM. NOT. I have to admit, universal search is awesome. OS6 on the other hand is a rip off of WebOS in so many ways HPalm should sue.
arpitkanstiya Jul 21, 2010 at 8:55 am
on facebook india page they leaved a post on 21st july stating blackberry OS 6 is coming soon.

Is there any iron clad date on this new OS ? All we hear about is "Late Summer" but nothing more.
Any ideas??
The 9700 will be supported. So that's a plus. :)
