If there was any doubt if social media was important to RIM, we can clear that up right now. In the latest S&P/TSX 60 Index for Canada, RIM crushed it by taking top honors overall for the most active in social media for October. The index ranked the top companies in Canada on their use of Twitter, Facebook and YouTube and RIM pulled in a combined score of 98.7 out of a possible 100. Pretty amazing stuff that truly shows the power of social media. While RIM came in 4th for the total number of Tweets, they still hold strong at number one for followers with over 1.5 million.
For YouTube, RIM holds 2nd place to only TELUS for total number of views. On Facebook however, RIM took tops again for both the total number of likes as well as combined likes + comments.
These are some pretty great stats when you consider RIM was up again the likes of TELUS, Reuters, Rogers, Canada Trust and Tim Hortons. I've always been a big believer in social media and from the looks of it, RIM is no slouch either.
Heading up to the BB10 launch event we'll expect to see no slowing down from RIM on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube as we get geared up for whats to come in the next few months. Good job RIM!!
Check out the full results of the index here and be sure to follow BlackBerry on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook for more.

Frank Boulben told us: "The most natural thing to do from a marketing standpoint is to put that experience in the hands of our fans and let them do the marketing job, so to speak," he said.
:) Social is the key ... !

So the marketing strategy for BlackBerry 10 is to have BlackBerry fans market the products? Gee, sounds like nothing has changed aboard HMS RIM except the re-arranged deck chairs. Play on orchestra, play on.

I have decided sir that comments like yours come out of ignorance or a bad case of the shorts.

Social media is one of the best marketing tools today. Welcome to the future.
However, I'll also mention that they have a pretty strong presence in the New York Times, online and print.
RIM marketing is coming.

If positive news about RIM affects you this much, why do you bother coming on this forum? After 2 years of bad news and bad rumors, we feel pretty damn good. Get over it!

I agree with BB9700CA. RIM should just go with half hour infomercials at 3AM.

In Business it costs people 4 times as much to attract new customers than to retain people. That's why retention at cell phone providers are key and you can negotiate a wicked contract with them. RIM is working with 80 Million installed user base... why not market to the easier influence crowd of $80 Million, then they can be ambassadors for other people to switch over. I mean isnt stuff like that gave rise to wicked sites like this?
and as someone else mentioned have you seen the NY times advertisement?

BB9700CA=missing the point.

Well done, RIM!

I don't care what anyone else thinks...For a company that was to many doubters DOA, this is huge news. I believe there is a groundswell of folks waiting for the BB10. I'm proud to be one of them.

CATtufts,
Very, very well said. I totally agree.
GO RIM and
GO BLACKBERRY 10 !!

The fact that i don't recognize any of those other companies listed in the top 10 is a clear indicator on how irrelevant this stat is... RIM has to do better. Phone launches in 2 months and none of my friends or co-workers know about it... They look at me like I'm speaking Dothraki when i bring up..smh
Shintocam Dec 13, 2012 at 1:50 pm
I can only assume that means you are not in Canada that you cannot recognize those other incredibly well known brands (here). Obviously this was a ranking of Canadian companies.
Masahiro Dec 13, 2012 at 1:57 pm
How exactly does RIM do better than first in this case?
ctuffy Dec 13, 2012 at 4:52 pm
Many of those companies lower on the list are well known in the lower 50 as well. Further the article states that RIM has the most tweets and followers than all on the list. Pretty impressive in my mind.
bmercer94 Dec 13, 2012 at 2:06 pm
I'm impressed. RIM is first, and my carrier is second. Guess i made the right choice(Telus Mobility offers support for your handset/account through twitter @TELUSsupport)

I think it's just because more Canadians are sticking with BlackBerry and using the social media ability more than other devices. (yes I know they lost the top spot)
We're really willing to stick with 'our' product and make it work so the numbers naturally reflect a somewhat bias figure.
Those that did jump ship (like my sons' girlfriend) are using an iToy now, but are eagerly awaiting BB10 and are following RIM closely.
I think this speaks volumes to the hidden numbers of people itching to come back to BB. They're watching and following the trending and all that social speak bla bla.
All the more reason for BB10 to get it right from the start.
Now, I like crappy tire (sorry...Canadian Tire...don't want to be sued) but whilst I have the app, I hardly use it and I certainly don't follow them on any social media format. Are people really tweeting and liking and following CT?......and CIBC?...who follows a bank? How does that happen?
I REALLY don't get a few of those on that list.

RIM is doing a great job on BlackBerry FB, Twitter and the multiple Blogs they run.. I follow them all and their approach is always refreshing and informative.. Whereas most brands usually have viral posts to attract attention.. RIM keeps their social media extremely professional (with little fun) and are always providing real life scenarios where application can be understood and the tweets and fb updates can be informative.
Servicing existing customers is the single most important task and a lot of the big brands can learn a thing or two from RIM.
Rootbrian Dec 15, 2012 at 6:16 am
I'm following quite allot of people from RIM on twitter. So when I wanna be in the know, I'm a click away from it all.
Ubersocial, twitter for blackberry, ya, now you know. Oh and identi.ca, some RIM people use that too, and it posts to twitter! :)
